To read a Mac-formatted drive on Windows, first identify whether it uses APFS or HFS+; then choose software that supports that format and the drive’s encryption. Windows does not natively provide universal access to Mac file systems. For broad documented format coverage, OWC MacDrive 12 is the most versatile option in this shortlist; for copying files without writing to the source, HFSExplorer or DiskInternals Linux Reader may be enough.
This is a feature-based comparison, not a hands-on speed or reliability ranking. Product capabilities and limits below are based on vendor or project documentation.
How to choose a tool for a Mac drive
- Identify the file system. APFS and HFS+ are different formats, and support for one does not imply support for the other. Paragon sells separate APFS and HFS+ products; HFSExplorer lists HFS, HFS+ and HFSX, but not APFS.
- Check encryption. Encrypted APFS support varies. OWC advertises access to encrypted APFS, while Paragon says its APFS product does not support volumes encrypted by an Apple T2 Security Chip. Confirm the particular drive’s encryption and your computer setup in the product documentation before using software with an important disk.
- Decide whether you need to write. A read-only browser or extractor can copy files out without offering a Windows-mounted read/write volume. If you need to modify files on the Mac drive, choose a product that explicitly supports read/write access for that format and configuration.
- Check the remaining fit. Verify snapshots, RAID or Time Machine needs, Windows version, CPU architecture, and whether you want files in Windows Explorer or a separate browsing app. A product’s general format label does not guarantee support for every volume configuration.
Top 5 tools to read Mac drives on Windows
1. OWC MacDrive 12: widest documented coverage here
OWC lists support for HFS+, APFS, encrypted APFS, and RAID. It says MacDrive makes supported Mac volumes available through Windows Explorer. OWC’s product claims about coverage and data protection are vendor statements, not independent test findings. See OWC’s MacDrive 12 product page.
OWC’s download page lists support for Windows 10 and 11, plus Windows Server 2019, 2022 and 2025, and says ARM-based systems are not supported. The page lists a five-day trial and identifies version 12.1.1.0, dated July 28, 2026. Because the download page is actively maintained, check it for the current release and terms before installing. Check MacDrive downloads and changelog.

Best fit: someone who needs one documented option for both APFS and HFS+, including encrypted APFS, or who needs the listed RAID support. Confirm that the exact RAID and encryption setup is supported; broad product coverage is not a guarantee for every configuration.
2. Paragon APFS for Windows: APFS read/write access
Paragon’s APFS product is the APFS-specific option in its lineup; it does not support HFS+. Paragon says it can detect FileVault volumes, but its documented limits include no support for APFS formatting or verification, no support for volumes encrypted by an Apple T2 Security Chip, and read-only mounting when snapshots are enabled. Supported APFS containers must reside on a single physical store. Paragon also describes limited read-only access to APFS cloned files. Review Paragon’s APFS features and limitations.

Best fit: an APFS drive that meets Paragon’s configuration requirements when Windows read/write access is needed. Do not choose it for HFS+ or assume every encrypted or snapshot-enabled volume will be writable.
3. Paragon HFS+ for Windows: for HFS+ volumes
This is a separate product from Paragon’s APFS driver. It is intended for HFS+ rather than APFS, and Paragon documents Core Storage restrictions, including unsupported Fusion Drive and FileVault configurations. Check the product’s current compatibility details against the actual volume, especially if it uses Core Storage. Review Paragon’s HFS+ product information.

Best fit: an HFS+ drive whose storage configuration is supported by the driver. It is not a substitute for an APFS reader.
4. HFSExplorer: free, read-only HFS-family browsing and extraction
HFSExplorer is a free, read-only tool for HFS, HFS+ and HFSX. It can browse volumes and extract files, and the project says it can read many Mac disk images. It requires Java and is not a read/write Windows filesystem driver. The project lists version 2026.4.9, dated April 9, 2026, and provides the program without warranties. 5. DiskInternals Linux Reader: read-only access, including APFS reader mode
DiskInternals lists HFS/HFS+ and APFS among Linux Reader’s supported file systems. Its page describes source-drive access as read-only and lists APFS in reader mode; that is not full APFS read/write support. The product is described as freeware, and the page lists version 5.2 with an update date of August 23, 2026. Check DiskInternals Linux Reader’s formats and version information.

Which tool should you pick?
- Need APFS and HFS+ coverage in one product? Start with MacDrive 12’s documented format support, then verify its Windows and CPU compatibility.
- Need to write to an APFS drive? Consider Paragon APFS if the volume is not T2-encrypted or snapshot-enabled and meets its single-physical-store requirement.
- Have an HFS+ drive? Consider Paragon HFS+ for driver-based access, after checking Core Storage limitations; use HFSExplorer if read-only extraction is enough.
- Only need to copy files and want read-only access? HFSExplorer is a free option for HFS-family formats; DiskInternals Linux Reader lists HFS/HFS+ and APFS reader mode.
- Using an ARM Windows PC? OWC says MacDrive does not support ARM systems, so do not assume it will work on that computer.
Protect the source drive while choosing
Before relying on any tool, match its documented support to the actual file system, encryption, snapshots and storage layout. If the files are important, avoid treating a read-only extraction utility as a repair tool, and do not assume that a product’s format label covers every volume variant. Where a tool offers write access, confirm the exact configuration is supported before making changes.
No independent head-to-head speed or reliability benchmark is established for these five products, so the comparison is about documented features and limits rather than measured performance.
