In the DEV Community account “‘Too Descriptive’—I had AI rewrite the first line of my post three times”, an author used Codex to reshape an X post: not just to make it shorter, but to make its meaning unfold with the video.
Why the original opening gave too much away
The post promoted a comic video about a designer reducing a set of buttons: first from nine to four, then to one, and finally to none. A boss successively criticized the designs as having too many buttons, then praised the blank screen as “nice whitespace.” The draft opening described that sequence almost in full.
The client’s response, as quoted by the author, was: “There’s no way it should be this explanatory.” The problem was not simply that the line was long. It previewed the progression and payoff that the viewer would otherwise discover by watching.
How three rounds changed the brief
First, ask for a shorter line
The author asked Codex for alternatives that would fit in the X timeline without summarizing the plot or giving away the punchline. The suggestions were shorter, but still felt like previews of what would happen.

Then, aim for meaning that arrives after viewing
The author refined the request: “Make it less descriptive, and more like something that makes people feel interesting after watching the video.” In other words, the line did not have to explain itself completely before the video played; it needed to become interesting in context after viewing.
Choose a hook that depends on its context
The author selected a candidate whose wording gained context after a different video, about a recommendation to use 2,000 GPUs to build a website. That is a distinct approach from a plot summary: the opening creates a reason to connect the line with what follows, rather than recounting the scene in advance. A partly opaque hook only works if the accompanying content supplies that connection; mystery by itself is not enough.

What the shorter draft did—and did not—show
The author reports that the drafts went from 232–266 characters to 178–202, counting two full-width characters as one. That reduction applied to these particular versions, and the author said it left more room for disclaimers and credits. It does not establish that shorter posts generally get more views or engagement.
The practical trade-off is about information and space: remove enough explanation to preserve the viewing experience, while keeping enough context for the line to make sense alongside the video and leaving room for necessary attribution or disclaimers.

Three checks to make before publishing an AI-assisted hook
Keep fictional dialogue from looking like a real quote
The author warns against opening with quotation marks that can make fictional dialogue look like an actual statement by a real person. A clipped first line may circulate without the disclaimer at the bottom. If a hook uses dialogue, make its fictional context clear even when it is separated from the rest of the post.
Do not turn names into hashtags
The article advises against using a person’s or company’s name as a hashtag. It distinguishes that from mentioning a name in the body when it is needed to provide context.

Check every implication against the script
A punchier line can introduce a factual error. The author describes a draft that implied a character objected to one button even though the character said nothing at that point. The wording was revised to match the scene. Read the final hook against the script or video, not just against the AI’s suggestions, and remove any reaction or event the source does not support.
A practical editing sequence
- Write down what the viewer should discover. Identify the scene, turn, or payoff the video needs to deliver rather than summarizing it in the opening.
- Set constraints for the rewrite. Ask for a line that fits the platform, avoids plot summary and does not reveal the punchline.
- Judge suggestions by what they reveal. If a short option still narrates the sequence, revise the brief toward wording that gains meaning after viewing.
- Test the line with the content beside it. Check that the hook makes sense with the video and is not merely puzzling on its own.
- Verify accuracy and safe attribution. Compare implications with the script, consider whether quoted dialogue could be mistaken for a real statement, and avoid names as hashtags.
- Reserve room for context the post needs. Keep space for disclaimers and credits rather than spending the entire opening on explanation.
What this example can teach—and what it cannot
The account is a useful example of iterative prompting: when the first request produced short lines that still felt like plot previews, the author changed the goal instead of treating brevity as the answer. Its strongest lesson is editorial: a hook can withhold the sequence yet still reward the viewer, provided the video supplies the missing context and the wording remains accurate.

The character counts and the author’s judgment describe one set of drafts. The article does not provide independent engagement data or establish that this technique will improve performance across posts.
