ToBRFV-resistant tomato and pepper varieties can restrict the virus, but resistance is not immunity: plants may still become infected or show symptoms, especially under heavy virus pressure. When choosing seed, look for a claim that names ToBRFV itself and says whether resistance is high (HR) or intermediate (IR). A label naming only tomato mosaic virus (ToMV), tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), or a general “mosaic virus” claim does not establish ToBRFV resistance.

What does “ToBRFV-resistant” actually mean?

ToBRFV is tomato brown rugose fruit virus, a highly transmissible plant virus that can damage tomato crops and infect peppers. “Resistant” describes a plant’s ability to restrict a specified pathogen or its damage; it does not mean the plant cannot be infected. The distinction matters because a crop can carry symptoms despite a resistance claim, and a claim for one virus does not automatically apply to another.

In the industry terminology reproduced by Rijk Zwaan’s product information, HR means high resistance and IR means intermediate resistance to the named pest or pathogen. HR restricts it to a high degree; IR restricts it to a moderate degree. These are comparative categories, not standardized efficacy percentages. The label is meaningful only for the pathogen named and the conditions under which the resistance claim applies.

Label What it means What it does not mean
HR High degree of restriction of the named pathogen or its damage under specified conditions. Immunity, guaranteed absence of symptoms, or protection from viruses not named in the claim.
IR Moderate degree of restriction of the named pathogen or its damage under specified conditions. Equivalent protection to HR, or a guarantee that a plant will remain symptom-free.

Under comparable conditions, IR plants may show more symptoms than HR plants. Even an HR plant can sustain minor damage when pathogen pressure is heavy. Performance can also vary with the plant’s age, growing conditions, the virus isolate, and the amount of virus exposure. Rijk Zwaan’s guidance explains these qualifications; its marketing phrase “rugose defense” is not a separate formal resistance grade.

For growers, resistance is one part of risk management—not a substitute for clean seed, careful handling, and sanitation. The UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs’ 2024 factsheet reports outbreaks in which up to 100% of a crop was infected and yield losses of 25–70%. Those are reported outbreak figures, not a forecast for every grower or a measure of how much a particular resistance claim will reduce losses. Read the 2024 UK factsheet.

Why isn’t a general “mosaic virus resistant” label enough?

Because related viruses are not interchangeable, the seed description needs to identify ToBRFV explicitly. In tomatoes, familiar Tm-1 and Tm-2/Tm-2² resistance genes protect against some other tobamoviruses but are overcome by ToBRFV. A package that names only ToMV or TMV resistance does not establish resistance to ToBRFV.

Check the complete pathogen code in a breeder’s current technical information, not just the headline on a packet or listing. For example, a breeder catalog inspected in the UK on October 30, 2026, assigns HR: ToBRFV to GARRIOSO RZ F1, HYRULE RZ F1, and PROSPANO RZ F1. In the same catalog, CHERAMY RZ F1 lists HR: ToMV, but has no ToBRFV entry on that page. That contrast illustrates how to read a resistance list; it is not a performance ranking or a recommendation to buy a particular seed in another country.

The European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) explains that ToBRFV overcomes the familiar tomato defenses against other tobamoviruses in its ToBRFV datasheet. The practical rule is simple: if ToBRFV is not named, do not infer a ToBRFV claim from another virus code, a generic “mosaic” description, or a claim that a variety is “rugose” resistant.

Are there tomato varieties with an HR ToBRFV claim?

Yes. Breeders market tomato varieties with HR ToBRFV claims, but those claims do not make the plants immune, establish field performance everywhere, or prove that a seed packet is currently available in your region. Availability and the growing system described in a catalog are regional facts, not universal guarantees.

Examples listed in the United Kingdom

The UK breeder catalog inspected October 30, 2026, explicitly lists HR: ToBRFV for the following tomato hybrids. The examples show different fruit types and forms; they are not a head-to-head trial.

Cultivar Catalog description ToBRFV claim Region and date of listing
GARRIOSO RZ F1 Red cocktail/truss hybrid HR: ToBRFV United Kingdom; catalog inspected October 30, 2026
HYRULE RZ F1 Red cherry/truss hybrid HR: ToBRFV United Kingdom; catalog inspected October 30, 2026
PROSPANO RZ F1 Large-vine red truss hybrid HR: ToBRFV United Kingdom; catalog inspected October 30, 2026

The same catalog also lists LUCIOSO RZ F1, MONDICIA RZ F1, NECLUDA RZ F1, and REXOSO RZ F1 with HR: ToBRFV. A UK catalog entry does not confirm authorized U.S. resale or current U.S. home-garden packet stock.

Examples listed for Australian greenhouse production

A Rijk Zwaan grower brochure dated September 2024 names Patzcuaro RZ (medium-large round), Cygnary RZ and Cuarzyta RZ (round cherry), and Balthasetto RZ (snacking tomato) as greenhouse-production varieties under its HR ToBRFV label. This is dated Australian regional information, not evidence of present inventory or suitability for every local field or home-garden setting. The breeder’s U.S. information page also describes HR tomato hybrids, while Syngenta’s U.S. information discusses an expanded HR portfolio in mini-cluster and baby-plum types. Neither statement by itself verifies a specific packet, seller, seed lot, or current local stock.

To check a candidate, ask the breeder or its local representative for the exact cultivar name, the ToBRFV resistance code and level, the intended production system, current regional availability, and documentation for the actual seed lot. A portfolio announcement is not proof that a named cultivar is available to home growers through a particular retailer today.

What does resistance in peppers mean?

Pepper resistance should be evaluated separately from tomato resistance. Pepper L genes are not the same as tomato Tm genes, and a pepper’s resistance to TMV or pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) does not automatically document resistance to ToBRFV.

EPPO reports protection associated with L genes in peppers, including observations of no systemic infection in some L-gene-bearing material, but also flags research suggesting that resistance-breaking may occur in some such material. A UK government factsheet from 2024 says pepper varieties carrying L1, L3, and L4 genes appeared resistant. “Appeared resistant” is a qualified finding: neither source establishes that every cultivar carrying any of those genes will resist every ToBRFV isolate.

No named, currently obtainable U.S. pepper cultivar with a verified, specific ToBRFV claim is established by the available regional information. If you are buying pepper seed, ask the supplier for the cultivar-specific ToBRFV claim and its HR or IR level, rather than treating an L-gene reference or another virus-resistance code as proof. If the supplier cannot provide a specific claim, regard ToBRFV resistance as unverified.

How should you assess a seed listing before buying?

Use the full seed description and lot information to distinguish a documented resistance claim from a broad marketing phrase. A variety’s resistance status and a seed lot’s health status answer different questions: the first concerns how the plant responds to a named pathogen; the second concerns whether the lot was handled and tested to reduce the chance of carrying the virus.

  1. Find the exact pathogen entry. Look for “ToBRFV” in the breeder’s technical listing or catalog. Do not substitute a ToMV, TMV, PMMoV, or general mosaic-resistance entry.
  2. Record the resistance level. Check whether the claim is HR or IR. If the listing does not state a level, ask the breeder rather than assuming that “resistant” means HR.
  3. Match the entry to the exact cultivar. Resistance claims can differ among varieties from the same breeder and even among closely related fruit types. Confirm the full cultivar name and hybrid designation.
  4. Check where and how the variety is intended to grow. A regional greenhouse listing does not establish field suitability or local availability elsewhere. Ask a regional representative about the production system and conditions for which the variety is offered.
  5. Ask about the seed lot separately. Find out which lot is being sold, what testing or health documentation applies to that lot, and what the documentation does—and does not—establish. A resistance claim is not a certificate that the seed lot is virus-free.
  6. Confirm authorized local supply. Use the breeder or an authorized regional supplier to establish current stock and provenance. A catalog or portfolio page alone cannot verify a particular retailer’s inventory or seller authorization.

Do not rank varieties by expected yield, flavor, or effectiveness from their HR or IR codes alone. Those characteristics require comparable evidence, and the resistance label is not a substitute for local performance and quality information. Syngenta’s published selection guidance similarly emphasizes considering local performance, quality, and flavor rather than choosing solely on HR-versus-IR marketing.

Can a resistant plant still become infected or show symptoms?

Yes. Resistance restricts the named pathogen to a degree; it does not promise that infection or symptoms are impossible. Rijk Zwaan puts the distinction plainly in its Australian grower FAQ: “Resistance offers protection, but not immunity.” That is a breeder statement, not an independent trial result.

Virus pressure, growing conditions, plant age, and the isolate involved can affect how a resistant variety performs. The claim also has a defined scope: it does not automatically protect a plant from other viruses, and an HR tomato scion does not make a susceptible rootstock resistant. Rijk Zwaan says its HR tomato scions can be used with susceptible rootstocks, but the rootstock itself does not acquire resistance and can contain high virus loads. Syngenta also discusses an IR ToBRFV rootstock. Treat the scion and rootstock as separate parts, each with its own resistance status.

As a result, do not use the presence of an HR or IR label as a reason to relax hygiene, move plants freely between production areas, or assume that symptomatic fruit proves a resistance claim was false. Symptoms and outcomes depend on more than the label, while spread can continue through contaminated handling.

How do seed health and hygiene reduce ToBRFV risk?

ToBRFV can contaminate seed coats and spread readily through contact during plant handling. EPPO describes movement through contaminated seeds and plant-to-plant contact; tools, hands, gloves, and clothing can also carry virus between plants or growing areas. Clean planting material and resistance address different parts of the risk, so neither replaces the other.

  • Start with traceable planting material. Buy from a supplier that can identify the seed lot and explain what health documentation applies. Do not interpret an HR claim as evidence that the lot itself is free of virus.
  • Limit movement between areas. Keep work in clean areas separate from suspect areas, and avoid carrying tools, gloves, or clothing from one area to another without appropriate sanitation.
  • Change disposable gloves during work. Use fresh gloves when moving between plants or areas as appropriate to the local protocol, and discard contaminated gloves rather than reusing them. Gloves are a hygiene supply, not a treatment for an infected plant.
  • Clean and disinfect tools. Follow local extension or biosecurity guidance for the disinfectant and procedure; the key is to avoid carrying contaminated tools between plants.
  • Manage footwear and clothing. Protective footwear or disposable shoe covers can be part of a managed greenhouse-entry routine where appropriate. They do not replace clean seed or equipment sanitation.

Rijk Zwaan’s grower guidance recommends frequent glove changes and tool disinfection, and Agriculture Victoria identifies tools, gloves, and clothing among transmission routes. If ToBRFV is suspected, avoid handling or moving potentially infected plants while seeking instructions from local extension or plant-biosecurity authorities.

Do symptoms or a rapid test prove that a plant has ToBRFV?

No. Mosaic, mottling, fruit discoloration, and rugose patches may raise suspicion, but they are not unique to ToBRFV. A symptom description or a quick test should not be treated as definitive identification on its own.

UF/IFAS advises that commercially available immunostrips can cross-react with other tobamoviruses and recommends molecular confirmation. A positive strip is therefore not definitive proof of ToBRFV; a negative strip is not a certificate that seed or plants are virus-free. If symptoms or a test result raise concern, keep suspect plants separate and follow local diagnostic and reporting guidance rather than relying on the strip alone.

What should U.S. growers know about imported seed and plants?

Federal import rules are distinct from a cultivar’s resistance claim and from a seed supplier’s lot-health documentation. USDA APHIS says imported tomato seed and plants for propagation require an official phytosanitary certificate with the required additional declaration under the federal ToBRFV order. The APHIS order was revised June 17, 2024: it removed fruit import requirements under that order while leaving propagative-material requirements in place. Do not apply the propagative-material rule as though it were an unchanged restriction on imported fruit.

Before importing seed or plants, check the current USDA APHIS ToBRFV federal import order and confirm the applicable documentation with the supplier. The APHIS FAQ displays a March 20, 2026 last-modified date; import rules and documentation should be checked against the current agency page, not inferred from an old product listing.

How do you choose between varieties when both list HR or IR?

A resistance code alone cannot tell you which variety will be the better fit. Start with the exact ToBRFV claim, then compare the factors relevant to your location and growing system rather than treating HR as a complete proxy for crop quality or local performance.

  • Resistance scope: Does the entry name ToBRFV, and is it HR or IR?
  • Crop type and fruit form: Does the variety match your intended market or use, such as cherry, cocktail, truss, or snacking fruit?
  • Growing system and region: Was the variety listed for a greenhouse system, and is there local guidance for your conditions?
  • Other resistance package: Which additional pathogen resistances are explicitly listed, and which are absent? Do not infer a broader package from one code.
  • Rootstock arrangement: If grafting, check the scion’s and rootstock’s claims separately; an HR scion does not confer resistance on its rootstock.
  • Seed provenance: Can the supplier identify the lot and explain the available health documentation?
  • Local performance and quality: Ask the breeder or regional representative for relevant information on quality, flavor, and performance under local conditions.

Where varieties have not been compared under the same conditions, the evidence does not support ranking them by yield or resistance effectiveness. Choose based on the traits and regional suitability documented for the specific cultivar, and treat a breeder’s resistance claim as a claim with a defined scope—not a universal guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the U.S. ToBRFV import order apply to fresh tomatoes?

APHIS’s June 17, 2024 revision removed fruit import requirements under that federal order, while requirements for propagative material remained. Check the current APHIS page for the product and documentation rules that apply to a specific shipment.

Can I grow a greenhouse-listed resistant tomato outdoors?

A greenhouse catalog entry does not establish field suitability. Ask the breeder or regional representative whether the specific cultivar is appropriate for your climate and production system before relying on the listing.

Does “rugose defense” mean a different resistance level from HR or IR?

No separate formal grade is established by that marketing phrase. Look for the actual pathogen entry and the stated HR or IR designation in the cultivar’s technical information.
