Jira Cloud’s built-in time tracking connects an estimate of how long work should take with work logs recording time actually spent and the time remaining. You can enter estimates and log work in weeks, days, hours, or minutes; the Jira administrator’s settings determine how bare numbers and working days are interpreted. This guide covers setup, logging, permissions, reports, and when a Marketplace app may be worth considering. Instructions here are for Jira Cloud; Data Center behavior may differ.
How Jira time tracking works
Time tracking has two separate inputs: an estimate entered before or during work, and work logs added as people spend time on the work item. Jira uses those entries to show time spent and estimated time remaining. The estimate is not a work log, and logging time does not by itself establish whether work was completed efficiently or what it cost.
- Original estimate: the expected effort for the work item.
- Work log: a record of time spent, entered by a user.
- Remaining estimate: the effort still expected after work has started.
- Time spent: the total time recorded in work logs.
Jira Cloud time tracking is enabled by default and always enabled in Cloud spaces, according to Atlassian’s time-tracking configuration documentation. That does not mean every user will see the relevant fields: the space type, work-item screens, and field configuration affect how the feature is presented.
How to estimate and log work in Jira
Enter or review the estimate
Open the work item and find the original estimate field. Enter the expected effort with a unit, such as 2h or 1d. Jira accepts weeks, days, hours, and minutes. If you enter only a number, Jira interprets it using the default unit configured by the administrator. Do not assume that a Jira day or week has a universal duration: administrators configure working hours per day and working days per week. See Atlassian’s time-tracking settings for the configurable units and display options.

Record time spent
On the work item, use the Log work action or the time-tracking field, depending on the interface and configuration available in your space. Enter the time spent and any other requested details, then save the work log. The time-tracking display updates to show recorded time and remaining time. Atlassian’s log-time instructions describe the work-item flow.
If someone logs time incorrectly, a user with the appropriate permission can edit or delete a work log. The ability to change a log is separate from the ability to create one.

Choose how the remaining estimate changes
When logging work, Jira may offer options for how the remaining estimate is handled. Choose the option that matches the team’s estimation practice: reduce the remaining estimate, set a new remaining estimate, leave it unchanged, or set it to zero when the work is complete, as applicable in the interface. The key is consistency: a work log records effort spent, while the remaining estimate communicates expected effort still needed.

In Jira Cloud, administrators generally do not need to switch the time-tracking feature on; Atlassian says it is enabled by default and always enabled in Cloud spaces. The practical setup task is to make the relevant fields and actions available to the people who need them.

- Check field visibility: confirm the Time Tracking field is available for the relevant work types and screens. If users cannot see an estimate field, the original estimate field may need to be added to the applicable screens or work types. Atlassian explains the field and configuration in its time-tracking configuration guide.
- Check permissions: verify that users who need to log work have the required work permission and browse access. In company-managed spaces, Atlassian names the logging permission Work on work items; Browse spaces is also required for the described actions. Permission wording may vary by space type. See Atlassian’s permission documentation.
- Set time conventions: if the team enters bare numbers or relies on day/week conversions, have an administrator confirm the default unit, working hours per day, working days per week, display format, and work-log/comment behavior. These settings affect how time is entered and displayed; they do not make all teams’ workdays equivalent.
Permissions for creating, editing, and deleting work logs
Logging, editing, and deleting are distinct permission-controlled actions. Atlassian’s permissions guide describes the permission framework, while its log-time instructions cover the work-log operation.
- Log work: users need the relevant work permission and Browse spaces access. For company-managed spaces, the logging permission is called Work on work items.
- Edit a work log: permission variants distinguish editing one’s own work logs from editing all work logs: Edit own work logs and Edit all work logs.
- Delete a work log: permission variants similarly distinguish deleting one’s own logs from deleting all logs: Delete own worklogs and Delete all worklogs.
Use the narrowest permissions consistent with the team’s process, especially where work logs are used for operational records. Exact labels can vary with space type and Jira’s current interface.

Compare estimates, time spent, and progress
Time Tracking Report
Jira’s Time Tracking Report provides the original estimate, estimated time remaining, and aggregate time spent for work items in a version. It is useful when a team needs to compare planned effort with recorded and remaining effort. The report describes tracking data; it should not be treated as proof of productivity, delivery quality, or project cost accuracy. See Atlassian’s Time Tracking Report documentation.
Board estimation and progress tracking
Board estimation and board progress tracking are related but distinct configuration choices: a board can use one method to estimate work and another to show progress. In team-managed spaces, estimation must be enabled before selecting time or story points, and adding original estimates also requires the Time Tracking field. The configuration options differ between company-managed and team-managed spaces. Consult Atlassian’s estimation and tracking documentation for the applicable board and space setup.

Time estimates or story points?
Time-based estimates and story points represent different ways of planning work, and the appropriate choice depends on how the team plans and reports. Time tracking is the relevant choice when people need to record actual durations and compare them with original and remaining estimates. Story points can be selected for estimation where the board and space support them, but they are not themselves logged hours. Confirm the board’s estimation and progress settings rather than assuming a story-point estimate feeds the time-spent fields.
When native tracking is enough—and when to consider an app
Start with Jira Cloud’s built-in workflow if the need is to record work, maintain estimates, and review the Time Tracking Report. Consider a Marketplace time-tracking app only if a specific reporting or workflow requirement is not met natively. Atlassian provides a Marketplace route for extensions, but the available documentation does not establish the capabilities, current price, or security posture of any particular app; compare those details with the vendor before adopting one.
Atlassian cautions that data for third-party Marketplace apps may be held by the app developer. Review the vendor’s privacy and data-security statements, data handling, and fit for your organization before installing an extension. See Atlassian’s third-party app guidance.

Constraints to know before relying on work logs
Atlassian’s log-time documentation states that a work item with more than 100 child work items cannot include those children in time tracking and recommends limiting the number to 100. This is a Jira product constraint described by Atlassian, not a general time-tracking rule; check the current log-time documentation if your work-item hierarchy approaches that limit.
