You can track time spent handling Gmail by using a time-tracking browser extension that adds a timer to Gmail or lets you start one from a supported page. Clockify documents a timer button on Gmail emails; Toggl Track lists Gmail as an integration for its browser extension. In either case, check what the extension carries into the time entry and whether your organization allows third-party access before installing it.
How Gmail time tracking works
Gmail does not need a separate physical timer for this workflow. A compatible browser extension connects a time tracker to the email interface: you start a timer while viewing or processing an email, then review the resulting entry in the tracking service. The extension’s documented integration determines what email information appears in that entry.
With Clockify Gmail time tracking, Clockify says its browser extension adds a timer button to Gmail emails. Clockify describes creating an account, installing its Chrome or Firefox extension, and starting a timer from an email. Its web app is where you edit past entries, review reports and timesheets, manage projects, and export reports.

The documentation establishes a browser-extension workflow, not a separately installed Gmail add-on.

What information carries over from Gmail?
Clockify: expect a description, not automatic project assignment
Clockify’s help documentation says Gmail picks up the description only. That means the email can provide the entry description, but you should not assume the integration automatically assigns a project or task. Add or manage those details in Clockify where your workflow requires them. See Clockify’s overview of integrations.
Toggl Track: item name may be suggested
Toggl says its extension can match an item name as a suggestion for a time entry. Its available documentation does not establish a more specific mapping of Gmail fields, so do not assume that a subject, sender, or other email detail will always populate a particular field.

Set up a Gmail time-tracking workflow
- Choose a tracker. Clockify documents a timer button in Gmail emails. Toggl Track documents Gmail support through its browser extension. Select based on the entry details and reporting workflow you need.
- Check access and workplace policy. If you use a managed Google Workspace account, review your organization’s rules for third-party apps before installing an extension. Administrators can govern app access to Workspace data, including through OAuth scopes. Google explains these controls in its documentation on controlling third-party app access.
- Install the extension through the tracker’s documented setup. Clockify describes installing its Chrome or Firefox extension. Toggl describes Gmail as a browser-extension integration. Review the extension’s requested permissions and install only if they fit your organization’s policy.
- Start the timer when you begin email work. In Clockify, use the button that appears in a Gmail email view. For Toggl, use the supported browser-extension workflow described by Toggl.
- Review the time entry afterward. Confirm its description and add any project or task details you need. Clockify says its web app supports editing entries and managing reports, projects, and timesheets.
Which option fits your workflow?
| Workflow detail | Clockify | Toggl Track |
|---|---|---|
| Documented Gmail access point | Timer button shown in Gmail emails, according to Clockify. | Gmail is listed as a supported browser-extension integration by Toggl and in its integration directory. |
| Documented entry information | Gmail picks up the description only, according to Clockify Help. | The extension can match an item name as a suggestion; more specific Gmail field mapping is not stated in the cited Toggl documentation. |
| Documented follow-up workflow | Clockify describes editing entries and managing projects, reports, timesheets, and exports in its web app. | Not stated in the cited Gmail integration documentation. |
These documents establish that both services support a Gmail-related browser-extension workflow, but they do not provide a basis for ranking one as more accurate or reliable. Choose according to the entry details and reporting functions you need, and verify the current extension behavior in your account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrivacy and managed Google Workspace accounts
Google Workspace administrators can control how third-party apps access Workspace data, and OAuth scopes indicate the services an app requests access to. Review the extension’s permission request and ask your administrator if the account is managed. The cited vendor pages do not establish the specific data-access scopes requested by Clockify or Toggl, so check the permission screen rather than assuming what either extension can access.
