Azure DevOps can track work-item effort, but effort fields are not the same as a daily time log or timesheet. For dedicated time entry, timers, approvals, and timesheet reporting, teams commonly add a Marketplace extension or connect an external service. Choose based on whether you need a timer, manual or retroactive entries, approvals, audit history, billable reporting, or time data shared across tools.
Does Azure DevOps have built-in time tracking?
Azure DevOps provides configurable work tracking, including work-item fields such as effort estimates and remaining work. Those values support planning and progress tracking; by themselves, they do not record when a person worked, provide a daily timesheet, or establish billable hours. Microsoft describes customization of process fields, work-item types, workflows, and related tools, as well as Marketplace extensions and custom development. The available options depend on the project’s process model. See Microsoft’s work-tracking customization overview.
For a dedicated time-entry workflow, teams can add an extension, build a custom solution, or integrate an external time-tracking service. That distinction matters: a timer or logged-hours record may coexist with Azure DevOps planning fields, and some extensions also update fields such as Completed Work or Remaining Work. Decide whether that synchronization is wanted before enabling it.

Write down the operational requirement before comparing products. A timer, an editable daily log, and an approved timesheet are different workflows, even when they all produce hours associated with work items.

| Option | What its listing or documentation describes | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 7pace Timetracker | One-click timers within work items, reporting widgets, monthly or timesheet views, company rules, approval workflow, and forecasting. Its Marketplace listing says a free trial is available; duration and limits are not stated here. 7pace GmbH says it serves over 3,000 customers, but the listing provides no measurement date or year. | Check current trial limits and pricing, Services/Server support, permissions, and whether approval and reporting match your process. Treat the customer count as a vendor statement, not an independently verified metric. |
| Time Tracker Logger | Per-day work-item entries, notes, audit history, reports filterable by date, project, type, or user, and CSV export. The listing says it uses Azure DevOps Extension Data Service. | Review its data and access model, read/write permissions, supported work-item types, and suitability for payroll or billing requirements. |
| Actual Effort Tracking | Start, Pause, and Complete timers on Task work items, manual retroactive entry, audit history, approval settings, and automatic updates to Completed Work and Remaining Work. | Confirm that Task-only tracking is sufficient and determine how automatic field changes will interact with estimates and existing reports. |
| TimeCamp integration | TimeCamp documentation describes synchronizing selected Azure DevOps projects and tracking imported items through its timesheet, desktop and mobile apps, or Azure DevOps plugin. | Assess the external service’s workflow, access, synchronization, and reporting against organizational requirements. The integration guide is vendor-authored, not an independent security review. |
| Time Tracker (Rothausen Development) | The Marketplace copy describes work-item entry, a monthly calendar, cross-project reports, CSV export, Microsoft-hosted Extension Data Service storage, and compatibility with Azure DevOps Services and Server 2020 or later. | These are publisher claims. Confirm the current listing, privacy and storage details, and compatibility with your environment. |
How to evaluate an extension or integration
Compare candidates against the same criteria rather than choosing based on a feature list alone:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Entry model: Does it support timers, manual daily entry, retroactive edits, or the combination you need?
- Coverage: Which work-item types can users track, and can the tool associate time with the right projects and users?
- Review controls: Are approvals available? Is there a history of entries and changes that meets your audit needs?
- Reporting: Can you report and export by the dimensions your team actually uses? Confirm that reports distinguish billable and non-billable time if needed.
- Field synchronization: Does the tool write to Completed Work, Remaining Work, or other Azure DevOps fields? Understand what it changes and how that affects existing estimates and dashboards.
- Data and permissions: Find out where entries are stored, which service or extension can access them, and what organization or project permissions it requires.
- Deployment and terms: Verify compatibility with Azure DevOps Services or your specific Azure DevOps Server version, plus current pricing, trial conditions, and vendor terms.
Microsoft notes that extensions add capabilities to an organization, but extension availability and installation are subject to administrative roles and organization policy. The Microsoft installation guide says that, for the documented installation cases, the installer must be a Project Collection Administrator or organization owner; users without that role can request extensions. Microsoft also says most extensions require at least Basic access and warns that some are available only for Azure DevOps Services, not Azure DevOps Server. Check the specific extension’s compatibility and access requirements before planning rollout.

Install and roll out the selected option
- Confirm the deployment and process. Identify whether the organization uses Azure DevOps Services or Server, the Server version if applicable, the relevant projects and work-item types, and the fields that current planning and reports depend on.
- Shortlist against requirements. Compare entry method, audit and approval workflow, reports and exports, storage and permissions, and any field updates. Review the current Marketplace listing or vendor documentation for each candidate.
- Check installation authority. Ask an organization owner or Project Collection Administrator to review and install the extension where required. If you do not have that role, use the organization’s extension-request process. Confirm that the needed users have the required access level.
- Configure a small pilot. Set up the intended work-item types, rules, approval flow, and reports in a limited project or team. Verify whether time entries change Azure DevOps fields and whether the result matches the team’s existing reporting.
- Test ordinary and exception cases. Have users enter time for a normal day, correct or add a past entry if allowed, and submit it for approval if the workflow uses approvals. Check that the audit trail and exports show the expected user, work item, date, and duration.
- Roll out with a clear operating rule. Tell users which work items to track, when to enter time, how edits and approvals work, and which report is authoritative. Review access and reporting after the pilot before expanding use.
When an external time service makes more sense
An external integration may suit teams that need to enter time from more than the Azure DevOps work-item interface. TimeCamp, for example, documents synchronization of selected Azure DevOps projects and time entry through its own timesheet, desktop and mobile apps, or Azure DevOps plugin. That can provide multiple entry points, but it also means evaluating an additional service and its synchronization, access, data handling, and reporting. The vendor’s integration guide describes product behavior; it is not an independent security assessment.
Prefer an extension when the required workflow belongs closely inside Azure DevOps and its permissions and deployment support fit the organization. Consider an external service when users need a broader timesheet workflow or access across interfaces. In either case, verify how records are stored and exported before using the system for payroll, client billing, or compliance-sensitive reporting.
