TI planned to use Thomas West’s W711 polishing-pad technology in tungsten CMP, while the companies planned joint development of pad materials and hard porous technologies. The announcement described intended work and attributed performance benefits; it does not establish that every plan was completed or that W711 remains available today.
What the TI–Thomas West deal covered
EE Times reported that the companies called the arrangement a “major alliance” in CMP. TI said it would use Thomas West’s W711 pad line for its tungsten CMP processes. They also planned to co-develop pad materials and “hard porous technologies” for existing and future CMP processes. The report said the arrangement was expected to help Thomas West develop new pad material more rapidly. EE Times reported the announcement on August 1, 2002.
The announcement identifies the intended application as tungsten CMP, but does not give fab-level deployment details or quantify how widely the pad was to be used.
What W711 was described as—and what TI said about switching
EE Times described W711 as combining the hardness of solid polyurethane with the porosity of non-woven polyester. The article attributed several operational benefits to Thomas West: lower slurry use, substantially longer pad life, improved pad-to-pad uniformity, fewer tool recalibrations when changing pads, and fewer defects. These are supplier-attributed claims in the report, not independently verified results; it provides no side-by-side measurements or named benchmark study.

Bill Morrison, identified by EE Times as TI’s DMOS 5 process engineering section manager, explained TI’s stated reason for the switch: “TI decided to switch to the W711 because it provides dramatic improvement in performance and reduces cost of ownership versus current methodologies.” That is Morrison’s quoted assessment, not independent comparative evidence.
How a CMP pad fits into semiconductor manufacturing
CMP is used to flatten wafer surfaces between deposited layers, creating a planar surface for later circuit fabrication. In the process described by Samsung Securities, a pad sits on a rotating platen while slurry is dispensed between the pad and wafer. Pad construction and slurry use can therefore matter to process operation, but the 2002 account does not specify the W711’s measured effect on a particular fab’s results. Samsung Securities’ February 14, 2019 semiconductor materials report provides the general CMP context.

Historical market-share context
A market-share table in Samsung Securities’ 2019 report lists Thomas West at 3% of the CMP pad market, alongside DowDuPont at 80%, Cabot at 10%, and Fujibo at 5%. The table attributes its figures to “Industry data.” These are historical estimates reproduced in that 2019 report, not audited figures or current market shares.
