For demanding display traffic, Bandwidth Boost can shift that allocation to as much as 120 Gbps transmit and 40 Gbps receive—not 120 Gbps in both directions. Its PCIe tunneling can connect supported external storage and expansion devices, while display modes and real-world performance depend on the host, cable, dock, and peripherals.
What Thunderbolt 5’s bandwidth numbers mean
Intel describes Thunderbolt 5 as built on USB4 Version 2, DisplayPort 2.1, and PCI Express Gen 4. Its headline bandwidth figures describe the link’s available capacity, not a guaranteed file-copy speed or a rate every connected device will achieve.
- Even allocation: up to 80 Gbps transmit and 80 Gbps receive.
- Bandwidth Boost: for high-volume display traffic, up to 120 Gbps transmit and 40 Gbps receive. The link reallocates capacity toward the computer-to-device direction rather than increasing both directions to 120 Gbps.
This boosted allocation can leave more outbound capacity for displays while connected storage and other devices continue exchanging data. These are Intel’s published capability figures, not independent benchmark results. See Intel’s Thunderbolt 5 announcement and Thunderbolt 5 technology brief.
How PCIe tunneling helps with external devices
Thunderbolt carries data protocols over its connection. PCIe tunneling provides a path for supported PCIe devices, including external storage and expansion accessories, to communicate with the computer. Intel says Thunderbolt 5 doubles PCIe data throughput compared with Thunderbolt 4 and identifies PCI Express Gen 4 as part of the standard’s foundation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Intel’s performance index lists 64 Gbps of connection bandwidth to an external PCIe Gen 4 accessory, such as an SSD or external graphics device using PCIe Gen 4 x4 lanes. That is an interface capability stated by Intel, not a promise of 64 Gbps of usable file transfers. Storage media, device controllers, the host implementation, workload, and other bottlenecks affect application-level results. Intel’s figure appears in its Thunderbolt performance index.
What displays Thunderbolt 5 can support
Intel’s overview describes support for up to two 8K monitors at 60 Hz with Display Stream Compression. Thunderbolt 5’s DisplayPort 2.1 foundation and Bandwidth Boost are relevant to high-resolution, high-bandwidth display setups, but the maximum is not a guarantee that every Thunderbolt 5 computer will drive that configuration.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The actual modes depend on the computer’s graphics hardware and port implementation, as well as the dock, monitors, refresh rate, color depth, compression support, and connection topology. Check the specifications for the specific computer and dock against the display modes you need. Intel’s overview of Thunderbolt 5 capabilities and accessories describes the dual-8K figure.
Thunderbolt 5 compared with Thunderbolt 4 and USB4
| Comparison | Thunderbolt 5 | Thunderbolt 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Bandwidth | Up to 80 Gbps in each direction when evenly allocated; Bandwidth Boost can provide up to 120 Gbps transmit and 40 Gbps receive for display-heavy use. | Thunderbolt 5 provides twice the total bidirectional bandwidth, according to Intel. |
| PCIe | Intel says PCIe data throughput doubles compared with Thunderbolt 4; Intel lists 64 Gbps connection bandwidth to an external PCIe Gen 4 accessory. | Thunderbolt 5 provides twice the PCIe data throughput, according to Intel. |
| Display capability | Intel lists up to dual 8K at 60 Hz with Display Stream Compression; actual modes depend on the full system configuration. | Not stated in the cited Intel Thunderbolt 5 comparison. |
Intel’s comparison establishes the generational bandwidth and PCIe increases; it does not establish that a given Thunderbolt 5 setup will outperform every Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 device in every workload. USB-C connector shape alone does not identify a port’s Thunderbolt capability.

Compatibility: the whole connection determines what works
Intel says Thunderbolt 5 is compatible with previous Thunderbolt versions. Backward compatibility does not upgrade an older computer: a connection works according to the capabilities of its host port and the other components in the chain.
A Thunderbolt 5 dock can provide a convenient connection point for displays, storage, and peripherals, but it cannot add Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth to a host that lacks it. Before buying a dock or cable, check:
