Thales Alenia Space is developing it for the Italian Space Agency (ASI) in cooperation with NASA’s Artemis programme. The planned module is meant to combine astronaut living space, science, mobility and surface logistics in one system.
What is the Multi-Purpose Moon Habitat?
MPH is a planned pressurized habitat for the lunar surface. ASI describes it as a first habitable surface module and a building block for Artemis operations near the Moon’s south pole. “Multi-purpose” means it is intended to do more than shelter a crew: it is also meant to support research, logistics and work on the surface.
Thales Alenia Space is leading the design. The project is Italy’s contribution to cooperation with NASA through Artemis; Altec and other Italian industrial participants are part of the design consortium.
Is the habitat real, or just a render?
The programme is real; the images are concept-stage depictions, not photographs of a finished habitat or proof of a final configuration. ASI reported that a NASA board completed a review on 19 May 2026 and cleared the project to proceed toward a Preliminary Design Review (PDR), expected in 2027. That is permission for the design to advance—not confirmation that flight hardware is built or ready to launch.

Public concept imagery shows a cylindrical pressurized body, solar arrays and articulated legs. These are design cues, not a certified description of the final flight vehicle. The programme’s design is still being reviewed.
What will astronauts use it for?
- Live and work: provide pressurized space for astronauts on the lunar surface.
- Conduct science: support experiments both with a crew present and during periods without one.
- Support surface operations: handle logistics and, as intended, move across the lunar surface rather than function only as a fixed room.
- Manage resources: Thales describes plans for water and resource supply, recycling and local production systems, alongside an architecture designed around mobility and energy autonomy.
These are programme goals, not a guarantee that every capability or system has reached flight-ready status.

- "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Words spoken by Neil Armstrong, the first human to walk on the moon. Those moments of the 21st of July 1969 will resonate, entertain and inspire generations to come.
- "The Eagle has landed." Then the moment of watching Neil Armstrong taking his first steps on the moon after leaving the Lunar Module, will make you wax nostalgia everytime you look at this model on one of the most pivotal moments in history, witnessed by millions on live television.
- Airfix is the oldest UK manufacturer of scale model plastic kits and has been producing kits for the mass market since 1952. Airfix produce a wide range of kits aimed at all types of scale modelers with subjects such as; military aircraft, ships, space, cars, dioramas and military vehicles.
- All paints, glue and brushes are included to complete the kit. Additional paints may be required to complete models to a higher specification. Painting and Assembly required.
- Large Gift Sets are perfect one-stop-shop gifts for your modeler friends or to build yourself once you have mastered the basics.
When is MPH supposed to launch?
Thales Alenia Space’s 25 July 2025 contract announcement gives 2033 as the planned launch date from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. It also states a nominal operational life of 10 years. Both are programme plans, not evidence of a fixed launch date or a tested service life. The next major design milestone ASI has identified is the PDR expected in 2027.
Why is building a lunar habitat difficult?
The habitat will have to protect its occupants and equipment while operating in an environment that is hostile to both people and machinery. Thales identifies extreme temperature swings, pervasive lunar dust, radiation, micrometeoroid impacts and reduced gravity as key challenges. The system also needs life support and must be able to operate for extended periods without direct crew intervention.

That combination helps explain why a compelling render is only an early view of the project. The pressurized structure, environmental protection, power, mobility and resource systems all have to work together under lunar conditions.
What do the published dimensions tell us?
European Spaceflight reported programme figures of approximately 3 metres wide, 6 metres long and 15 tonnes in 2025. These are reported early figures, not dimensions or mass for a final certified configuration. They give a sense of the proposed module’s scale, but should not be treated as settled flight specifications.

What role does MPH play in Artemis?
ASI presents MPH as a building block for a sustained human presence near the lunar south pole and as a platform for science, technology demonstrations and long-term surface logistics. Its role is therefore broader than providing a place to sleep: the project is intended to support continued activity on the Moon. The programme team at Thales Alenia Space described its aim in 2023 as “constructing the first Italian human outpost on the lunar surface to enhance and support human space exploration on the Moon and beyond.”
