Android can put Chrome on an external monitor, but a website may still load its mobile layout. A Chrome flag reported in October 2025 could address that mismatch by asking sites for desktop versions while Android desktop mode is active on an external display. It is an experimental feature reported by Chrome Unboxed, not a confirmed, generally available Chrome setting.
What the reported flag would change
The flag is named #request-desktop-user-agent-on-external-displays. Chrome Unboxed reported on October 8, 2025, citing Android Authority’s Mishaal Rahman, that it would make Chrome request a desktop user agent when Android desktop mode is active on an external monitor. The intended benefit is fewer manual requests for a site’s desktop version.
These are three distinct things: Android’s system-level desktop mode, Chrome’s existing controls for requesting desktop websites, and the reported experimental flag that would automate that request in the external-display context. Asking a website for its desktop version does not turn Android into a desktop operating system or guarantee that a particular site’s desktop layout or features will work well.
The report does not establish the flag’s current availability, default state, Chrome release channel, version requirements, or device compatibility. It should not be treated as a feature every Android user can enable today.

How to request desktop sites with Chrome’s documented setting
Google Chrome Help documents a supported alternative that does not depend on the reported flag. In Chrome for Android, open Menu → Settings → Site settings → Desktop site. Labels and placement may vary by Chrome version or language.
- Default view: Chrome chooses mobile or desktop presentation based on screen size and device RAM.
- Mobile site: Prefer mobile versions of websites.
- Desktop site: Prefer desktop versions of websites.
You can also use the Chrome menu’s Desktop site control for an individual page. Google’s help page says automatic desktop-site selection requires 8 GB of RAM; devices with less memory default to mobile sites. That is the help page’s stated behavior, not a universal hardware rule for every Chrome feature or the reported external-display flag.

How the flag compares with the existing setting
| Option | Scope | What is established | User effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome’s Desktop site setting | General preference, with a menu control also available for an individual page | Documented by Google Chrome Help | Choose a default or request desktop view for a page |
#request-desktop-user-agent-on-external-displays |
Reportedly applies when Android desktop mode is active on an external display | Described by Chrome Unboxed in October 2025; present availability and rollout are unverified | Reportedly automatic if available and enabled |
The flag’s reported scope is narrower than a general default: it concerns Chrome’s request to websites in an external-display desktop-mode situation. The sources do not establish comparative speed, reliability, or battery impact.
How to check whether the flag is in your Chrome build
- Open Chrome’s flags page by entering
chrome://flagsin the address bar. - Search for
request-desktop-user-agent-on-external-displays. - If it appears, read the description and availability state shown in your installed build before changing it. The October 2025 report does not verify which channels or versions include it, so do not assume that an online instruction applies to your device.
If the search returns no result, the flag is not exposed in that build. Use Chrome’s documented Desktop site setting instead. Experimental flags can change or disappear, so their presence should not be mistaken for a stable rollout commitment.

Why Android tablets are relevant—but not proof of the flag’s rollout
Chrome for Developers has separately described desktop sites as the default on premium Android tablets meeting its stated criteria: a display of at least 10 inches and 8 GB of RAM. That tablet policy is useful context for Chrome’s existing large-screen behavior, but it does not verify the external-display flag or make those criteria requirements for it.
Google Chrome Help also describes a large-screen experience with a monitor-adapted toolbar and tab strip, plus management of more than 20 windows across connected displays. These are claims on Google’s help page; the exact experience depends on the device and software behavior available to the user.

What a desktop-site request cannot guarantee

- The browser request does not itself provide Android desktop mode, external-display support, or a desktop operating system.
- The available sources do not confirm compatibility for any specific phone, tablet, monitor, or Chrome release.
