For The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on PC, tune settings in stages rather than dropping everything to Low: pick a realistic resolution and frame-rate target, try the upscaler supported by your GPU, then test whether disabling path tracing improves performance enough to justify its visual trade-off. These recommendations apply to the Remastered PC build released September 29, 2026, not automatically to the 2015 original or the 2022 Next-Gen version.
What changed in The Witcher 3 Remastered on PC?
The 2026 Remastered release is a free upgrade for existing owners on supported platforms, according to CD PROJEKT RED. Its PC rendering has changed substantially: the publisher describes native DirectX 12 rendering with multithreading, GTAO, ray-traced local shadows, and updates to shading, tone mapping, reflections, and other rendering features. NVIDIA says the PC build is DirectX 12 only, so older advice to switch to DirectX 11 does not apply to this build.

Settings guidance for the 2015 release or 2022 Next-Gen edition should not be assumed to carry over. In particular, historical performance figures from older guides are not benchmarks for Remastered.
How to improve Witcher 3 PC performance
Make one change at a time, then compare it in the same repeatable location and activity. The publisher cautions that frame rates vary with the scene, system configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution, so a setting that helps one PC may not help another.

- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
- Choose a resolution and frame-rate target your PC can sustain. Start with the resolution you actually want to play at and a target suited to your display and hardware. Resolution has a significant effect on performance, according to the publisher.
- Try a compatible upscaler. Use the supported option that best balances image clarity, frame rate, and latency on your hardware. Compare in a scene with fine detail and movement, not just a static view.
- If performance still falls short, test path tracing off. Path tracing is an advanced lighting option. NVIDIA explains that it unifies lighting and rendering rather than combining separate ray-traced and rasterized effects. Disabling it is a reasonable performance-first test, but the available sources do not provide a current measured FPS gain for doing so.
- Check HairWorks and the latest patch notes. At launch, CD PROJEKT RED advised disabling NVIDIA HairWorks because an issue could significantly affect performance. That was a temporary advisory, not a permanent setting rule; confirm whether a patch has resolved it before relying on the recommendation.
- Keep other visual settings where they are unless testing points to a bottleneck. The current official materials do not provide a readable, current setting-by-setting FPS cost table. Avoid assuming that every reduction will produce a meaningful gain.
Which upscaler should you use?
CD PROJEKT RED lists vendor-specific upscaling and frame-generation options for this release. Availability depends on the GPU; the sources do not establish one universally best-looking or fastest choice.
| Option | Remastered PC support listed by the publisher | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 | Includes Ray Reconstruction. | GPU compatibility, image clarity and stability at your output resolution, frame-time consistency, and input latency. |
| AMD FSR 4 | Includes Frame Generation and Anti-Lag 2 on Radeon RX 7000 Series and newer; FSR 2 is used on unsupported GPUs. | Whether your GPU supports FSR 4, how the image looks in motion, and whether frame generation suits your latency preferences. |
| Intel XeSS 2.0 | Includes Frame Generation and Low Latency. | GPU compatibility, visual stability and clarity, and the balance between responsiveness and smoother output. |
These features are listed in the publisher’s PC feature notes. No same-system comparison across these options is provided there, so test whichever options are available on your PC rather than treating a vendor label as a quality guarantee.
When should you turn off path tracing?
Test path tracing off when the frame rate or frame-time consistency is below your target and you are willing to trade some of the advanced lighting presentation for performance. NVIDIA describes path tracing as a unified lighting and rendering approach; that explains why it is a sensible setting to test, but it is not evidence of a particular FPS gain on your hardware.
Compare the same scene with the same resolution and upscaler, changing only path tracing. Consider whether the lighting difference matters to you as well as whether motion feels smoother. The decision depends on your GPU, target resolution, and preference for visual effects versus responsiveness.
What to know about requirements and frame rates
CD PROJEKT RED says its expected FPS targets come from QA testing and can fluctuate by scene. The publisher also identifies system configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution as factors in performance. Its current requirements page presents the detailed hardware table as an image, so its hardware rows are not reproduced here.
- The publisher says Windows 10 will no longer be officially supported.
- An SSD is required for the latest technical enhancements. CD PROJEKT RED connects SSD use with faster loading and smoother asset streaming; this is not evidence that an SSD raises average FPS.
For system-specific requirements, check the current official requirements page. Its FPS targets should be read as QA expectations, not guaranteed results for every scene or PC.

Does the HairWorks warning still apply?
On September 30, 2026, GamesRadar reproduced CD PROJEKT RED’s launch-era statement: “We’ve identified an issue related to NVIDIA Hairworks that may significantly affect performance.” The accompanying instruction was: “We recommend disabling that setting until this is addressed in a patch.” Because this was a launch advisory, check current patch notes before treating HairWorks as a present-day performance problem.
Why old Witcher 3 settings guides may mislead
Older recommendations and performance numbers can reflect different rendering paths and game versions. For example, NVIDIA’s historical guide reports HBAO+ running four frames per second slower than SSAO in its original-game testing. That observation belongs to an older, DirectX 11-era guide; it is not a Remastered benchmark or a universal current comparison.

What if your PC cannot run path tracing locally?
NVIDIA documents streaming the game through GeForce NOW as an alternative to local rendering. Cloud streaming is separate from optimizing local graphics settings; service availability and partner status can change, so check NVIDIA’s current GeForce NOW information for your region.
