Short answer: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition historically bundled the base game with both major expansions—Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine—plus 16 additional content items. The 2022 next-gen update also brought substantial changes to graphics, performance, controls, and quality of life, though features vary by platform. As of CD PROJEKT RED’s September 2026 support update, both expansions are included with the base game at no extra cost, and storefront base-game packaging has been replaced by Complete Edition. That makes today’s purchase question different from the older edition comparison.
What does “original game” mean here?
It can mean either the 2015-era release before the major 2022 update, or the base-game entitlement in a player’s current library. This comparison uses “original game” for the earlier release and explains separately what current owners and buyers receive.
The Complete Edition name first described a bundle: the base game, both major story expansions, and 16 pieces of additional content. The later next-gen update added technical and gameplay improvements to the game itself; those changes were not simply extra story DLC. CD PROJEKT RED’s December 2022 Complete Edition announcement described the bundle and its launch alongside that update.
What content is included?
| Content | Earlier base game | Complete Edition / current packaging |
|---|---|---|
| Main story | The base game’s story. | The same base game story. |
| Hearts of Stone | Not part of the original base-game release. | Included in the historic Complete Edition bundle; CD PROJEKT RED’s September 2026 FAQ says it is now included with the base game at no extra cost. |
| Blood and Wine | Not part of the original base-game release. | Included in the historic Complete Edition bundle; CD PROJEKT RED’s September 2026 FAQ says it is now included with the base game at no extra cost. |
| Additional content | Original launch content. | The historic Complete Edition listed 16 extra content items. The 2022 update also added a Netflix-inspired quest and items. |
The expansions add substantial story content, not just cosmetic extras. They can be started separately from the main menu. CD PROJEKT RED explains the current inclusion and ownership changes in its FAQ on the expansions being included in the base game.

What did the 2022 update change?
The update added more than sharper graphics. Its feature set depends on platform and hardware, so no single description applies equally to every version.
Graphics and performance
- On supported PC and next-gen platforms, the update added ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion. Compatible PC hardware could also use ray-traced reflections and shadows.
- On PC, options included ULTRA+ settings and DLSS 3 for compatible hardware; AMD FSR 2.1 was also added.
- On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the 2022 patch notes described a Ray Tracing Mode targeting 30 FPS and a Performance Mode targeting 60 FPS, with dynamic resolution scaling. These are mode targets from the notes, not independent benchmark results.
- Xbox Series S did not receive ray-tracing features; its modes were Quality and Performance.
- Other visual changes included improved textures and lighting and higher draw distances on supported versions.
These are the capabilities documented in CD PROJEKT RED’s December 2022 next-gen update notes, not a guarantee of feature parity across systems or a statement of current measured performance.

On PS5, the 2022 notes also called out DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers and Activity Cards. Older PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch versions received a different, more limited set of updates; the 2022 announcement specifically described selected quality-of-life features and Netflix-inspired content for PS4 and Xbox One. Check the current build and platform listing rather than assuming every feature is available everywhere.
Do existing owners need to buy Complete Edition again?
Usually, not solely to obtain the included expansions or the 2022 update—but the exact entitlement depends on the store and platform. CD PROJEKT RED’s current FAQ says owners of the base game can download Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine at no extra cost, including on PS4 and Xbox One. It also says separately owned expansions remain in owners’ libraries, while standalone expansions have been delisted and the storefront base game has been replaced by Complete Edition.

The 2022 next-gen release was announced as a free update for owners of earlier PS4, Xbox One, and PC releases. For the later Remastered release, CD PROJEKT RED’s August 25, 2026 announcement said it would be a free upgrade for owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The current support FAQ also names PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 as Remastered platforms and addresses a Switch-to-Switch 2 claim route when available. Store entitlements can differ, so check the exact product in your account before purchasing.
CD PROJEKT RED Support states: “Your save files remain compatible and Cross Progression will remain functional the same as before.” The FAQ also says trophies are unaffected. These assurances concern the current support information and should be checked against your platform’s product and account details.

Does every platform get the same version?
No. The 2022 update’s graphics features and modes depended on hardware, and the update scope differed between current-generation and last-generation systems. Current Remastered availability is also platform-specific: the 2026 FAQ names PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The August announcement discussed Switch owners claiming the Switch 2 version when released. Because platforms and entitlements have changed over time, confirm the version and upgrade route for your particular library or store before buying.
For a physical copy, CD PROJEKT RED announced retail Complete Edition copies for PS5 and Xbox Series X in 2023. That announcement does not establish present stock, price, or regional availability. Its January 2023 retail announcement identifies the announced formats; verify the listing’s platform and edition before ordering.
