No, the Tom Cruise clips posted to TikTok in March 2021 were not real. Actor and Cruise impersonator Miles Fisher performed the scenes; visual-effects artist Christopher Ume created the face swap that made Fisher look like Cruise. The account presented the videos as parody, but their realism still led viewers—and some commercial detection tools—to mistake them for authentic footage.
What happened in the DeepTomCruise videos?
In early March 2021, the TikTok account @DeepTomCruise posted short videos appearing to show Tom Cruise golfing, performing a coin trick and joking with the camera. Cruise did not appear in them. The account’s clips were face-swap deepfakes made by Belgian visual-effects artist Christopher Ume, also known as Chris Umé, with Fisher, a performer known for impersonating Cruise. The Guardian reported on the videos and their creators.
How were the videos made?
Miles Fisher performed the scenes
Fisher supplied the underlying performance, including the movements, gestures and comic timing. His resemblance to Cruise, along with his hair and the sound of his own voice, helped make the clips convincing. CBS described Ume’s work as stitching Cruise’s face onto Fisher’s real video and sound. CBS explains the collaboration.
Christopher Ume created the face swap
Ume used visual-effects work to replace Fisher’s face with a Cruise likeness. The result was not simply an edited photograph: it was a moving image built around a real performer’s body and actions, with a digitally altered face. The available accounts describe the face-swap process but do not establish a complete technical breakdown of the tools or model used.

Why did viewers believe they might be real?
The videos were framed as parody, but the production combined a convincing impersonation with a face swap that held up across movement and changing expressions. The premise also seemed plausible enough that some viewers speculated Cruise had joined TikTok. Realistic video can make that kind of speculation feel like confirmation, especially when a clip spreads without its original context.
There were signs that invited closer scrutiny. The Guardian reported that viewers noticed a possible mismatch in a reflection, and that commercial deepfake-recognition tools marked the clips “authentic.” Neither observation settles authenticity on its own: a visual artifact can be subtle, while a detector’s label is a result to assess—not proof that a video is genuine. The Guardian’s account covers the detector results and reported artifact.

What does this case show about deepfake detection?
A detector can be useful as one signal, but its result should not be treated as a verdict. In this case, commercial tools reportedly labeled the clips authentic even though the videos were face swaps. That is a concrete reminder that automated analysis can get a particular clip wrong; a reassuring label does not establish who made a video, whether its subject truly performed in it, or whether the clip is presented in context.

For a viral video, check the account that first posted it, look for credible reporting about its origin, and compare claims about the footage with what is known about the performer and production. The DeepTomCruise clips show why provenance—the trail of who created and posted a video—matters alongside visual inspection and detection tools.

Ume told The Guardian he wanted to show the technology’s possibilities and did not intend to use it to upset people. He also said he believed laws should support responsible use of AI and deepfakes. In an interview with CBS, he described the team’s thinking: “We believed as long as we’re making clear this is a parody, we’re not doing anything to harm his image.”

- Stands approximately 7" tall
The case illustrates a tension in synthetic video: an explicit parody frame can explain a creator’s intent, while a realistic clip can still be mistaken for authentic footage when viewers encounter it apart from that context. Ume’s comments are available in The Guardian’s interview and CBS’s report.
