For a solo developer making a 3D shop simulator, Unity is the strongest starting point if you want a ready-made supermarket template and C#; Godot is the clearest fit for a stylized game with no engine royalties; and Unreal Engine 5 suits a visually ambitious interior, especially if you already work in Blueprints. Start with one shelf, one box, one checkout interaction, and one save—not a full store or hundreds of modeled products.
The quickest useful stack is an engine, a shop-specific kit or simple Blender models, and a small prototype of the stocking-and-checkout loop. Add customers, prices, upgrades, and the daily schedule only after that loop works. The comparisons below reflect products, versions, and prices reported through November 2026; storefront prices and availability can change.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Free plan / price | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unity | A supermarket sim built with C# and a ready-made template | FLOBUK Store Simulator template, version 1.3.0 | Personal is free below $200,000 in annual revenue or funding; Pro starts at $2,310 per seat per year | Personal: web, desktop, AR/VR, mobile; Pro adds console and Apple Vision Pro publishing | Nov 2026 |
| Godot | Stylized 3D, open-source licensing, and no game royalties | GDScript, C# on .NET builds, and C++ via GDExtension | Free, MIT-licensed | Desktop, web, and mobile; console publishing uses approved SDKs or porting partners | Nov 2026 |
| Unreal Engine 5 | High-fidelity interiors and developers comfortable with Blueprints | Fab shop-simulator template lists UE 5.5–5.8 support | Free for game developers until a product exceeds $1 million in lifetime gross revenue; then a 5% royalty applies to qualifying revenue | Windows development platform listed for the template; official console pipeline available | Nov 2026 |
| GameMaker | A 2D, top-down, or pixel-art shop game | Commercial release license | Free for non-commercial use; $99.99 one-time Professional license for commercial release | Desktop; console export requires Enterprise | Nov 2026 |
These are different routes, not a universal performance ranking. For a conventional 3D supermarket, begin by choosing between Unity’s template ecosystem and Godot’s no-royalty licensing; consider Unreal when the interior’s visual fidelity is central to the game.

A shop simulator needs a small set of connected systems before it needs a large content library. Code Monkey described the core genre in 2025 as “basically just a First Person Controller and an Interaction System.” That is a useful prototype boundary: the player must move through a shop, handle stock, put goods on shelves, and complete a sale.

The minimum playable loop
- Movement and interaction: first-person or third-person controls, a way to target objects, and actions such as pick up, place, inspect, or use.
- Stocking: a box or inventory supplies a product, and shelves have slots or capacity that determine what can be displayed.
- Checkout: a customer’s purchase reaches a register, and the player completes a sale.
- Persistence: save enough state to resume the shop after closing the game.
Code Monkey said his own shop-sim prototype took about 5–10 hours using a Unity toolkit of roughly 40 elements. That is one creator’s report, not a general development estimate or a guarantee: the useful lesson is that a narrow interaction prototype can be much smaller than a finished management game.
Tools to add as the loop earns them
After the basic loop feels understandable, add selling prices and purchase costs, customer routes and queues, out-of-stock behavior, and a day cycle. Then decide whether workers, loans, bills, store expansions, random events, and experience-based unlocks support the game you want to make. A feature list from a template can help identify likely systems, but it is not a requirement to build every system.
Which engine is best for a solo shop-sim project?
Choose according to the language you can work in, the visual target, and whether an existing shop system saves more time than it costs to adapt. The licensing differences also matter: Unity has a revenue-and-funding threshold, Godot has no royalties on games, and Unreal applies a royalty above its product-revenue threshold.
Unity: best fit for a C# supermarket template
Unity is a practical choice if you want C# and a prebuilt supermarket foundation. The FLOBUK Store Simulator template advertises systems spanning player control, interactions, storage and product purchasing, shelf restocking, customer queues, checkout, workers, cleaning, day cycles, events, upgrades, bills, UI, and save games. That breadth can reduce setup work, but the project still needs to be understood and tailored to your own game.
Unity Personal is free while annual revenue and funding remain below $200,000. Unity says Pro is required for businesses above that line; the listed price is $2,310 per seat per year or $210 per month. Pro is also required for console publishing and adds Apple Vision Pro publishing. Unity cancelled its Runtime Fee, so do not budget for that fee. Unity says its in-editor assistant uses credits; its official tools page lists a free CLI, MCP server, and plugin for supported coding agents, with Unity 6.0 or later required. The Unity AI tools page also says the “Unity AI” brand name is being retired.
The trade-off is project complexity: Asset Store packages can bring overlapping systems and dependencies. Before purchasing multiple controllers, inventory tools, or interaction frameworks, decide which system owns each responsibility and avoid combining packages until their Unity-version and render-pipeline requirements match.
Godot: best fit for stylized 3D and royalty-free distribution
Godot is free and open source under the MIT license. The Godot Engine licensing page says, “You are free to use Godot Engine, for any purpose.” It also says the engine license does not apply to the content you create and that you remain the sole copyright owner of your game. When redistributing the engine binary, include the engine copyright notice; the license page describes linking to godotengine.org/license as an acceptable way to do so.

Use GDScript for a direct Godot workflow, C# with a .NET build, or C++ through GDExtension. C# web export is not available in the Godot 4.2 notes cited by the engine homepage, so check the target version and platform before choosing C# for a browser release. Godot can handle stylized 3D; it is not limited to 2D. Its disadvantages for this project are a smaller commercial plugin catalog than Unity, no first-party console program, and less strength than Unreal for high-end photoreal interiors.

For consoles, Godot projects use official SDKs available to approved developers or work through porting partners such as W4 Games. Treat console release as a separate budget and production step, not an automatic export promise. A GodotLearning listing reported version 4.7.2 in October 2026.
Unreal Engine 5: best fit when the store itself sells the visuals
Unreal makes sense when detailed interiors, lighting, and dense product displays are central to the pitch, or when you already use Blueprints. Nanite and Lumen are relevant to that visual ambition, and Blueprints can support much of the interaction logic without requiring a solo developer to write the entire game in C++.
Epic’s game licensing terms provide for a 5% royalty on lifetime gross revenue above $1 million USD per product. Epic Games Store sales are royalty-free. The threshold applies to qualifying revenue directly attributable to the Unreal product, regardless of who collects it. Do not confuse game licensing with non-game commercial use: Epic lists a $1,850 per-seat annual license for certain non-game commercial use above $1 million in the past 12 months. GodotLearning listed Unreal Engine 5.8 as the planned final major 5.x release in its October 2026 check.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA Fab shop-simulator template lists support for Unreal Engine 5.5–5.8 and includes ordering, stocking, serving, earning, deliveries, building, and an in-game computer. The listing gives Windows as its development platform. Unreal’s costs in time and project size can be a poor trade for a low-poly game whose appeal is its systems rather than its rendering; a 5% royalty also matters if a commercial hit crosses the threshold.
GameMaker: a credible route only for 2D
GameMaker is a reasonable budget-conscious option for a top-down kiosk, pixel-art shop, or other 2D management game, but it is not the default for a first-person 3D supermarket. Its official FAQ says a commercial game requires a $99.99 Professional license; non-commercial use is free, and console export requires Enterprise. The FAQ says there is no forced watermark.
Which shop simulator templates and asset kits save the most work?
Choose a template when you need systems; choose an asset kit when you need art and fixtures. A template may include customer logic and checkout but constrain how you structure the game. A model pack can fill a store quickly, but it does not implement shelf capacity, item pricing, or customer behavior.
| Tool | What it includes | Price and version | Best use and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| FLOBUK Store Simulator | Unity supermarket template: player controller, interaction, products, storage, economy, customers, checkout, workers, cleaning, progression, events, upgrades, UI, and save games | $90; version 1.3.0; latest release listed as 29 July 2026; 14.1 MB; Unity 6000.0.58; URP compatible | Closest listed drop-in supermarket starting point for Unity. The version row lists Built-in and HDRP as incompatible. |
| Halfwatt Games Pawn Shop Kit | 65 game-ready prefabs; 35 props and fixtures; 12-piece modular room; 18 colour variants; Unity scenes and scripts, Godot 4 GLB files and import script; 42 sound effects | Price not stated in the Epic Developer Community post of 21 October 2026 | Useful for a tactile pawn, job, or store sim with opening fixtures and inspectable objects; not a complete shop-management system. |
| Absurdox Store Builder Complete | 700 low-poly models across supermarket, gift, and clothing stores; groceries, shelves, carts, checkouts, walls, doors, and stockroom; mobile and HD LOD sets | $29.99; published 27 October 2026; digital download | Broad art library for Godot, Unity with glTFast, Unreal Engine 5, or Blender. It does not replace gameplay systems. |
| Fab Shop Simulator Template | Order, stock, serve, earn, delivery management, building, 12+ item categories, filters, search, and an in-game OS | Price not stated in the listing information | Unreal Engine 5.5–5.8; Windows development platform listed. |
| Code Monkey Toolkit | General Unity productivity toolkit of about 40 elements, including a first-person controller and interaction system, with a shop-sim sample | Price not stated in the listing information | Useful for prototyping the interaction grammar; it is not a complete supermarket game. |
The FLOBUK template’s Unity Asset Store listing is the Unity Asset Store; its documentation is at FLOBUK’s Store Simulator documentation, and a web player is listed at flobuk.itch.io. The Halfwatt kit documentation is linked in the table. Absurdox’s Renderhub listing describes the Store Builder as a digital download, not a physical product.
For the shop kits with published prices, the checked date is Nov 2026. Store Builder Complete is listed at $29.99 for 700 files. Its Mobile kit is listed at 212,110 triangles and 288,470 vertices; its HD kit at 637,752 triangles and 467,215 vertices. Those counts are useful when selecting a level of detail, but they do not predict a particular game’s frame rate.

How should you build the store’s art and interaction systems?
Make one representative shelf and product work before scaling up. A convincing store is not a collection of unrelated props: the player should be able to pick up stock, place it in a defined shelf slot, see a price, and sell it through a checkout interaction.
Start with a greybox, not a SKU marathon
- Block out the room using simple walls, shelves, a counter, and a register. Use modular assets, a Godot in-editor modeller such as UniBuilder, or Blender.
- Create one product type and a shelf-slot manager. Decide whether a shelf accepts a single product type or mixed stock before adding more items.
- Implement the stock box: opening it, taking products, and closing it. Connect each product to a price and a purchase cost.
- Add one customer path from entrance to product to checkout. Handle the out-of-stock case, then make the register complete a sale.
- Save and reload the state, then build for the target PC early enough to catch import and packaging problems.
This progression mirrors the systems in Ahmed Nasser’s Udemy course, which teaches a Blender-to-Unity C# pipeline with shelf managers, pick-and-place, pricing panels, purchasing, a HUD, and a PC executable export. The course page listed 12 sections, 100 lectures, 16 hours and 42 minutes, and an October 2026 update. It advertised access from $13 per month via subscription when checked; Udemy prices can vary with promotions, so that is not a fixed one-time course price.
Use Blender and imported kits for different jobs
Blender is free software under the GPL, but Blender Foundation says, “What you create with Blender is your sole property.” That distinction matters: the program’s license does not take ownership of your artwork. The Udemy course uses Blender for low-poly store structures, shelves, coolers, boxes, bags, and materials before exporting to Unity. For imported Store Builder models, the stated glTF 2.0 format, metre scale, 1 m wall grid, 3 m walls, and 1 m gondolas give a consistent basis for fitting a room together.
For quick stylized props, RookieDev recommends Blockbench for low-poly modeling and prototypes, while Blender is better suited to detailed organic work. Kenney offers free game assets; RookieDev stated that the assets are CC0 and may be used commercially. Confirm the license for the specific pack you download, because the Kenney homepage text cited here says “completely free” but does not itself display the CC0 deed. itch.io also has game-asset packs, but the license varies by pack.
Make physical interactions legible
The Halfwatt Pawn Shop Kit illustrates how fixtures can help objects feel physical rather than decorative. Its listed features include 25 moving parts across 16 models, open-and-close controls, hollow colliders for placing items in drawers, holders for rings in trays, a mass property for props, an inspect-on-F action, and 42 sound effects. The kit’s Unity demo describes E to open, click to pick up, and F to inspect. Those details are useful examples of the interaction layer, not a requirement to use the kit or its controls verbatim.
What is a realistic production sequence for one developer?
Keep the first milestone small enough to expose whether stocking and checkout are enjoyable. The schedule below is a staged plan, not a promise that every solo project will take the same time.
Days 0–2: test the engine and the loop
- Import one shelf and one glTF prop.
- Make one box interactable and let the player move a product onto the shelf.
- Use a raycast or equivalent targeting method to activate the checkout.
- Save the minimal state and make a build for the target PC.
Week 1: prove stocking
Implement movement, pick-up and placement, a single product type, and one shelf-slot manager. Do not spend this week creating a complete inventory of groceries: validate that a player understands how to carry, stock, and retrieve a product.
Week 2: prove selling
Add buy-versus-sell prices, a stock box, a simple customer route, and the register interaction. Make an out-of-stock shelf behave clearly. If customers cannot find or purchase goods, adding more product models will not solve the underlying gameplay problem.

Week 3 and month 2: make the space coherent, then expand
Use a modular room kit, a greybox modeller, or Blender to shape the store after the interaction loop is working. In the second month, replace placeholder art with a consistent visual direction; add a day cycle, experience progression, bills, or store expansions only if they reinforce the experience. Code Monkey’s view that the theme is the last 5–10% is best read as a warning against starting with theme-specific content before testing shared interactions—not a literal estimate for every game.
What should you budget for software, models, and publishing?
The engine can cost nothing at the start, but thresholds, marketplace purchases, and commercial-use terms still affect the budget. Price and plan figures below were checked Nov 2026, before tax; subscription promotions and storefront listings may change.
| Cost area | Reported option | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | $0 for Godot; Unity Personal is free under its $200,000 revenue-or-funding threshold; Unreal game use has a 5% royalty above $1 million lifetime gross product revenue. Unity Pro is $2,310 per seat per year or $210 per month. | Unity Pro is required above its threshold and for console publishing. Unreal’s royalty applies to qualifying revenue; Epic Games Store sales are royalty-free. |
| Shop systems and assets | $90 for FLOBUK Store Simulator; $29.99 for Store Builder Complete; Halfwatt kit price not stated in the post. | Check engine version, render pipeline, import workflow, license, and whether a product is a system or only a model library. |
| Course | Udemy course advertised from $13 per month by subscription | Promotional and subscription prices can change; the cited listing did not establish a fixed one-time price. |
| AI coding assistance | Antigravity free with basic weekly limits; GitHub Copilot Pro $10 per month; Claude Pro $20 per month or $17 per month billed annually; Cursor Premium $30 per month | These prices were reported by AICoderClass on 17 October 2026. Unity’s in-editor assistant is separate: the free Personal trial converts to $10 per month; CLI, MCP server, and official plugin are free. |
| 2D commercial engine | GameMaker Professional: $99.99 one time | Console export requires Enterprise. |
| Prototype art | Blender and Kenney assets: $0 in the cited options | Check the license for each downloaded asset or pack before shipping. |
AI is optional support, not a substitute for verifying that the game works. The 2026 GDC Festival of Gaming survey found 36% of respondents used generative AI tools as part of their job, while 52% thought generative AI was having a negative impact on the game industry. Its most common reported use was research and brainstorming (81%); code assistance was 47% and prototyping 35%. A generated script or mesh still needs to be checked for correctness, licensing, and suitability for the project.
Unity’s official tools support Unity 6.0 and later: its CLI, MCP server, and plugin for Claude Code, Codex, and Grok are listed as free, while the in-editor assistant uses credits. Godot has no official AI assistant; coding agents can work in a project folder, and Godot MCP Studio is a third-party option. AICoderClass reported its Pro edition at €39 one time, with the listed price scheduled to rise to €59 from 4 November 2026. Treat that as the vendor pricing reported by that source, not an official Godot product.
For generated product meshes, the named tools Meshy and Tripo AI were listed with free plans in October 2026 directories. Free tiers may restrict commercial use, so check the terms for the exact plan and asset before including generated groceries or packaging in a commercial release. Store Builder Complete itself discloses AI-assisted procedural generation and says the models are hand-checked.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you choose between a template and building from scratch?
Buy a template when its existing systems match your design closely enough that integration and learning will be faster than implementation. Build from scratch when the template’s assumptions would dictate the game’s data, interactions, or visual structure.
- Choose a complete template if you want to prototype a conventional supermarket and the advertised systems—customers, stock, checkout, progression, and saves—fit your intended loop.
- Choose a prop kit if your interaction code is already underway but you need shelves, fixtures, products, and a room quickly.
- Choose a course if learning the implementation matters more than getting a ready-made system. The cited supermarket course teaches a Unity/C# path, not a general-purpose engine-neutral workflow.
- Build the core yourself if your shop has unusual rules or you want control over a small prototype. Start with one product and one shelf, not a complete catalogue.
Before paying, verify the asset’s current version, engine compatibility, license, and dependencies. For Unity in particular, the FLOBUK listing’s compatibility is specific: its listed Unity 6000.0.58 version is URP compatible and not compatible with Built-in or HDRP on that version row. That makes render-pipeline choice a decision to settle before building around the template.

Which engine do developers use most, and should that decide your choice?
Popularity can indicate a large community, but it does not tell you which engine best fits one shop simulator. In the 2026 GDC Festival of Gaming survey, 42% of respondents named Unreal Engine as their primary engine and 30% named Unity; Godot was used by 11% among newer indie developers. More than 2,300 game industry professionals responded.

The survey’s mix of respondents matters: the Godot figure is specifically for newer indie developers, while the 42% and 30% figures refer to survey respondents overall. Use these numbers as context for community and industry presence, not as a performance test or a forecast of sales. The same survey found 28% of developers were making or optimizing games for Steam Deck; that makes PC-device support worth considering, but it does not establish that your game will run well without profiling on your intended hardware.
Likewise, avoid treating social-media revenue claims as audited market data. Code Monkey said in a 20 March 2025 video description that Supermarket Simulator made $27 million and TCG Card Shop Simulator made $20 million “just last year.” That is a YouTuber’s claim about 2024, not a publisher- or Valve-released revenue figure. It may explain interest in the genre, but it cannot establish what a new solo game will earn.
How we picked these tools
The recommendations are based on fit for the work a solo shop-sim developer must do: implement stocking and checkout, populate a 3D store, ship to the intended platform, and stay within a workable licensing and budget model. The comparisons favor project-specific capabilities—such as a real shop template or Godot-ready GLB files—over a broad claim that one engine is best for every developer. Prices and compatibility are tied to the dated listings described above, rather than assumed to remain fixed.

Can I make a shop simulator without programming?
A template can reduce how much gameplay code you write, but the listed shop templates still require setup, configuration, and adaptation to your design. If you want to understand and change the underlying stocking, price, or customer rules, learning the engine’s scripting workflow will make the project easier to maintain.
Are shop simulator games still a viable indie genre?
The genre has visible audience interest, but a creator’s revenue anecdote is not a dependable market-size estimate. Plan around a small prototype and your own production budget rather than treating another game’s reported earnings as a likely outcome.
Can I sell a game that uses Blender-made models?
Yes. Blender Foundation states that work created with Blender is the creator’s property; the Blender software’s GPL license does not claim ownership of your artwork. Separately check the license for any third-party model, texture, or sound you import.
Should I make the game for Steam Deck from the beginning?
Consider controller navigation, readable UI, and performance headroom early if handheld PC support is a goal. The GDC survey’s 28% figure describes developers making or optimizing games for Steam Deck; it does not establish a requirement or guarantee compatibility for an individual release.
