A changed control is not proof that the requested behavior is active: an app may have separate settings from the operating system, and feature availability can depend on your plan, region, workspace, role, product surface, provider requirements, or authorization.
First, pin down what the switch is doing
Before changing more settings, record the switch’s exact label, where it appears, the app and operating-system versions, and what you expected to happen. Then classify the result:
- The switch is unavailable: it may be disabled by a requirement, account restriction, or policy.
- It changes back: the change may not be saved, or another setting or policy may be overriding it.
- It stays changed, but nothing happens: the control may be enabled without making the feature available in the current context.
- An error appears: note its exact wording; it may point to a permission, connection, or authorization problem.
These observations are different clues, not a confirmed diagnosis. Without the app and setting name, there is no universal cause or fix.
Find out which layer owns the setting
A control can belong to the app, the operating system, the device, an account, or a managed workspace. The fix depends on which layer controls it.

App setting
Many apps have their own preferences, often under a gear icon. Changing a similarly named operating-system option may not change the app’s setting, and vice versa. Microsoft describes how to find settings in Windows apps in its Windows app settings guidance.
Operating-system or device setting
Permissions and device-wide modes may need to be enabled outside the app. Check the instructions for your specific operating system and device; menu paths and available steps vary. A permission that is enabled at the system level still does not guarantee that the app’s feature is available or configured.

Account or managed workspace setting
Some features depend on the account or workspace, not just the visible switch. OpenAI’s ChatGPT app availability guidance, for example, says availability can vary by plan, region, workspace, role, product surface, provider requirements, and authorization. Check the relevant service’s current requirements and any organization-managed policy before treating the switch as the whole setup.
Check that the feature is available where you are using it
A setting or connection can look active while the feature remains unavailable in the current screen, chat, model, or product surface. OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance for ChatGPT apps specifically cautions that a successful connection does not guarantee that every later step will work. Confirm that the feature is supported in the exact account and surface where you expect to use it, and that any required authorization or provider setup is complete.

Apply troubleshooting steps for your exact app and platform
Once you have identified the setting owner and confirmed availability, follow that product’s own instructions. Do not apply steps for one platform to another without checking its documentation.

- Restart the phone.
- Check for Android system updates and app updates.
- Force-stop the app, then open it again.
- If the issue continues, consider clearing the app’s cache or data. Clearing data can erase information stored by the app, so check what will be removed before proceeding.
- If one app still fails, contact its developer.
Google notes that steps vary by phone. These Android steps are not universal instructions for Windows, iOS, or a particular service.

- The exact setting label and where you found it.
- The app, device, operating-system version, and app version.
- Whether the switch is disabled, changes back, stays changed without effect, or shows an error.
- The exact error text, if any, and the screen or workflow where you expected the feature to work.
- Whether the account, workspace, role, or organization policy could affect access.
Those details help distinguish a setting that did not persist from a feature that is enabled but unavailable in the current context. The specific cause and menu path cannot be determined without the product, setting, platform, and observed behavior.
