The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Windows 11 gaming handheld PCs built by ASUS with Xbox, not dedicated Xbox consoles. Their fresh appeal is the way an Xbox-style full-screen experience, controller-first navigation and compatibility guidance sit on top of Windows while leaving access to supported games from other PC storefronts. The idea is compelling, but the two models have different hardware and price points, and official product announcements alone cannot prove a broad performance or market-changing advantage.
What are the ROG Xbox Ally handhelds?
ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X on June 8, 2025, describing them as products developed in partnership with Xbox. Both are Windows 11 handheld gaming PCs that launch into a full-screen Xbox experience. ASUS says Windows remains available for games and mods from other sources, so the Xbox branding describes an integrated interface and play options rather than a new console architecture. ASUS’s announcement and Xbox’s launch details explain the partnership and experience.
Xbox CVP Roanne Sones described the goal in ASUS’s June 8 announcement: “We wanted to create an authentic Xbox experience in a handheld form factor. With ROG, we made it happen on the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X.” That is the stated design aim; it is not evidence that the handhelds behave exactly like an Xbox console in every game or situation.
How do the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X compare?
The Ally X has the stronger listed hardware, more memory and storage, and a larger battery. Xbox’s September 25, 2025 US launch post gave the models different estimated retail prices (ERP). Specifications and prices below are for the 2025 models; actual retailer prices and availability may change.

ASUS’s current site also includes later-generation 2026 products, so check the model year when comparing listings. What does “Xbox” mean on a Windows handheld?
The Xbox experience brings together four different ways to play. They have distinct requirements, so “Xbox games” does not mean one uniform mode:
- Native PC play: Install and run supported PC games directly on the handheld, including games from other PC stores. This is local play, not streaming.
- Xbox Play Anywhere: Xbox says more than 1,000 supported titles can be played across console, PC and handheld with one purchase. The benefit applies to eligible titles, not every Xbox game.
- Remote Play: Stream games installed on your own Xbox console over your home network. The game runs on the console; the handheld acts as the screen and controls.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta): Stream supported Xbox console games where the service is available. Availability varies, and ASUS says cloud play requires a Game Pass membership.
Xbox describes these modes in its launch overview. The practical distinction is whether the game runs on the handheld, streams from a console you own, or streams from the cloud; network and service conditions matter for the latter two.

What do Handheld Optimized and Mostly Compatible mean?
Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility Program uses labels to help players judge how a game is likely to work with handheld controls and display behavior. At launch, Xbox said thousands of games would receive one of the two labels.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Mostly Compatible: The game can work, but may need minor settings changes.
These labels are useful guidance, not a universal guarantee of flawless compatibility, performance or visual quality. Check the individual game’s status and be prepared to adjust settings where indicated. ASUS’s launch announcement describes the label definitions.

ASUS says it redesigned the 2025 chassis with grips inspired by Xbox controllers. The Ally X also has impulse triggers with vibration motors, according to ASUS. The full-screen Xbox experience is designed for joystick and button navigation; ASUS says the Xbox button opens Game Bar settings and widgets. These are manufacturer descriptions of the hardware and interface, not independent findings about comfort or ease of use. ASUS’s announcement and its Ally X product page provide the product details.

Does that make the ROG Xbox Ally a game changer?
It makes a credible case for a more Xbox-oriented Windows handheld: the device starts in a full-screen Xbox interface, is designed around controller navigation, and combines PC games with Xbox features such as Play Anywhere, Remote Play and Cloud Gaming. Windows access also means players are not limited to a single storefront.
There are important limits to that claim. These remain Windows gaming PCs, not dedicated Xbox consoles; the two models differ substantially in hardware and cost; streaming features have service, network or availability requirements; and compatibility labels do not promise that every game will work perfectly. Official product claims do not establish independent comparative performance, comfort or battery results across games. Nor do the official materials establish a population-level change in gaming behavior or the handheld market. Whether the redesign feels transformative depends on how much a player values the Xbox interface and how they intend to play.
