Remote desktop access can open a path into a computer—and, if that computer is connected to a wider network, the consequences can reach beyond the remote session. The risk is not that every remote connection is unsafe; it depends on internet exposure, software vulnerabilities, credentials, configuration, and the controls around access. CISA’s guidance focuses mainly on Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), so its recommendations should not be treated as a product-by-product assessment of every remote-support tool.

How remote desktop access can create risk beyond one computer

RDP is used both to connect to a system and, after an attacker gains a foothold, to move between systems. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide says threat actors often gain initial access through exposed, poorly secured remote services, then use the native Windows RDP client to traverse networks. A separate CISA advisory documents RDP being used for lateral movement across multiple hosts: CISA advisory on Iranian government-sponsored actors.

That does not mean RDP automatically causes a compromise. It means that an exposed service or stolen account can be a route into a system, while broad permissions and weak network separation can let an intruder reach more systems afterward. The overall risk depends on how the service is exposed, whether it is patched, who can sign in, and what that account can reach.

Is it safe to leave Remote Desktop on?

If there is no business or personal need for RDP, turn it off and close unused RDP access points. CISA’s StopRansomware Guide states: “Do not expose services, such as remote desktop protocol, on the web.” The agency’s Disable Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) (CM0025) countermeasure says disabling RDP blocks adversary initial access and lateral movement using RDP.

If you need remote access, avoid making RDP directly reachable from the public internet. Put it behind an authenticated, secured access layer and limit which users and originating systems can connect. CISA recommends a secure VPN after MFA or a zero-trust remote-access gateway where RDP is required; its 2025 exposure-reduction guidance also recommends a secure, monitored jump host and MFA where possible, including at the jump-host level. See Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance.

Controls that reduce remote desktop risk

  • Reduce exposure: Disable RDP when it is not needed. For required access, mediate the connection through a secured VPN, virtual desktop infrastructure, monitored jump host, or zero-trust gateway rather than exposing RDP directly.
  • Limit who and where: Restrict remote logon rights to the users who need them, and restrict allowed origin systems or users. Keep administrative privileges to a minimum and segment networks so a compromised account cannot freely reach every system.
  • Strengthen sign-in: Require multifactor authentication for necessary remote logins. CISA recommends MFA for remote access in its Require Multifactor Authentication guidance. Where feasible, use phishing-resistant MFA for privileged and critical accounts. MFA reduces account-takeover risk, but it does not substitute for limiting exposure, patching, or monitoring.
  • Slow repeated guesses and watch activity: Set account lockouts after a defined number of failed attempts. Log RDP attempts and investigate unusual login patterns.
  • Keep the whole access path supported and patched: Update operating systems, RDP components, gateways, VPNs, and remote-access devices. Replace systems that no longer receive security updates.

How to assess a remote-access setup

Compare the controls around the connection rather than assuming one product or arrangement is automatically safer. Check each of these areas:

  • Exposure: Is RDP directly reachable from the internet, or does access pass through a secured layer?
  • Authentication: Is MFA required, and are stronger methods used for privileged or critical accounts where feasible?
  • Access limits: Can the organization restrict both the people who sign in and the systems they connect from?
  • Maintenance: Are the operating system, remote-access components, and gateways patched and still supported?
  • Detection: Are connection attempts logged, and are unusual patterns reviewed?
  • Blast radius: Are administrative rights restricted and networks segmented to limit what one compromised account can reach?

What home users should take from organizational guidance

CISA’s cited advice is U.S. federal cybersecurity guidance aimed primarily at organizations. Home users can apply the same basic principles: disable remote access they do not use, avoid exposing RDP directly to the internet, keep devices updated, use MFA where available, and limit account privileges. For device-specific settings, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The guidance does not establish that every consumer remote-support product has the same risks or controls as Microsoft RDP.
