To keep a compatible Pebble smartwatch connected to its replacement services, pair it with the Pebble app, open boot.rebble.io, and choose Switch to Rebble. That redirects the app from Pebble’s defunct servers to Rebble’s Web Services, restoring access to services such as the app store. Rebble is a community-led continuation of the Pebble ecosystem—not a guarantee that every legacy feature works, and not the same thing as installing experimental replacement firmware.
What Rebble preserves—and what it does not
Pebble ceased operations before the Rebble Alliance emerged. Rebble began as a supplement to official Pebble documentation and grew into an unofficial community effort to keep the platform useful. Its stated focus is replacing key ecosystem components, especially the app store and related web services, while maintaining and advancing Pebble functionality.
That distinction matters: switching a watch to Rebble is a services migration, not a firmware replacement. Rebble’s practical work includes the Rebble Store, related web services, mobile tooling, and continued work on open-source Pebble firmware. The community’s January 2025 statement described its broader aim as preserving the watches as “a little oasis of user-respectful technology” amid platforms designed to sell users’ attention.
Projects in the ecosystem
- Rebble Store: Access to watchfaces and watchapps through the Pebble app ecosystem. Core Devices’ 2026 store page says its Pebble app store contains 15,000 watchfaces and watchapps; that is the store’s own listing, not an independently verified count of items currently installable on every watch.
- Mobile apps and services: The project index lists an official Pebble Android app for Rebble Web Services, a volunteer Rebble mobile app, and Gadgetbridge, an unaffiliated open-source Android alternative.
- Firmware work: Open-source Pebble firmware work continues, but it is separate from the normal “Switch to Rebble” setup and has important maturity limits described below.
How to switch a Pebble watch to Rebble
Rebble’s setup guide describes an Android flow. Its boot process tells the Pebble app to use Rebble servers instead of Pebble’s defunct servers. The essential steps are:

- Install or sideload the Pebble app on the Android phone, if it is not already installed.
- Pair the watch with the phone using the Pebble app.
- On the phone, visit boot.rebble.io.
- Choose Switch to Rebble and follow the on-screen setup. The app should then use Rebble services.
- After setup, open the app store in the Rebble app to browse and install available watchfaces.
This describes the guide’s Android procedure; it should not be read as a universal set of instructions for every phone operating system or every watch configuration. If the watch is not paired, resolve that first, since the switch is performed through the phone app. The guide does not establish that every historical Pebble feature or third-party service has been restored.
What features can you expect after switching?
The switch is intended to restore the app-store and related web-service path, so watchface and watchapp access is the most direct practical benefit. Other features depend on the service, the phone app, and the watch’s own capabilities. Rebble’s guide identifies an optional subscription for three service benefits:

The subscription is a support option tied to those features; the setup guide does not say that a subscription is required merely to complete the server switch.
Rebble’s community and nonprofit direction
On January 27, 2025, Rebble said it was transforming into a nonprofit, with the goal that “the community (that’s you!) are the owners of Rebble.” The post framed that direction around education, embedded-systems learning, historical preservation, and open-source software. It is an organizational plan and stated mission, rather than evidence that every project or service is already governed or funded in a particular way.

The same post discussed the difficulty of replacement-firmware development: progress had been slow, and receiving original source code did not make the work instantly easy because the code first had to be made to build. Rebble also clarified that Google had open-sourced PebbleOS for everyone and that Rebble planned to make use of it. That is different from saying Google transferred PebbleOS exclusively to Rebble.
RebbleOS is experimental, not a routine upgrade
RebbleOS is an open-source reimplementation of firmware for former Pebble devices. Its stated goal is binary compatibility with original Pebble OS applications and radio compatibility with smartphone apps designed for Pebble. Those goals do not mean it is a finished, drop-in replacement for the firmware on a daily-use watch.

The project’s feature matrix reports low or partial support across hardware targets, and its README describes hardware use as experimental. Treat RebbleOS as a development project for people willing to work with an incomplete implementation—not as the step to take when all you want is to reconnect a working watch to Rebble services. The ordinary service migration above does not require installing RebbleOS.

Pebble preservation now sits alongside a revived hardware ecosystem. Core Devices’ store currently lists the Pebble Time 2 and Pebble Round 2, as well as the Pebble Index 01. Its product philosophy emphasizes always-on e-paper, long battery life, physical buttons, simple use, customization, and majority open-source work. These listings indicate current products in the ecosystem; they do not, by themselves, establish stock, delivery timing, warranty terms, or repair options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor someone deciding whether to keep using a legacy watch or consider newer hardware, the useful comparison is not simply “old versus new.” Consider whether the watch can still be paired with the phone you use, whether the services and store meet your needs, how mature the firmware path is, and whether the e-paper display, buttons, and long-battery-life approach suit your daily use. Availability and support terms should be checked with the seller when evaluating a purchase.
