A poller can run correctly and still miss its deadline if the code starts measuring elapsed time with one clock and checks it with another. For timeouts, use a monotonic clock consistently; use wall-clock time for calendar dates. Then check whether the callback is running late because of scheduling delays rather than incorrect clock arithmetic.

Why is my timeout firing too early?

First check how the deadline is created and how it is checked. A common bug is mixing clock domains: for example, adding a duration to a monotonic reading, then comparing that deadline with a wall-clock reading. Those values do not share a meaningful origin, so the comparison can produce an early or late timeout even if the polling loop itself is behaving normally.

Wall-clock time answers “what date and time is it?” An elapsed-time timeout asks “how much time has passed?” Those are different questions and should use different clock semantics.

Should I use wall-clock time or a monotonic clock for a timeout?

Use a monotonic clock to measure a local duration. Python’s official time.monotonic() documentation says it cannot go backwards and is unaffected by system clock updates. Its reference point is undefined, so only the difference between readings is meaningful. A monotonic reading is not a calendar timestamp.

Clock choice Meaning Clock-change behavior Suitable use
Wall clock / realtime Calendar date and time Can be changed by system clock updates Displaying or recording civil time; realtime-based timers where calendar behavior is intended
Monotonic An elapsed-time counter with an unspecified origin Python documents that it is unaffected by system clock updates Local timeouts and measuring durations
Linux CLOCK_BOOTTIME Monotonic-like time that includes time spent suspended Linux documents it as suspend-aware Timeouts that should continue to elapse while the machine sleeps

For Linux-specific timer behavior, Python’s timer file descriptor documentation distinguishes realtime, monotonic, and boottime timers. Realtime timer settings need attention if the system clock changes; Linux monotonic timerfd timers are unaffected by those changes. The relevant Python timerfd APIs were added in Python 3.13, so availability depends on operating system and Python version.

How should I build and check an elapsed-time deadline?

Take the current reading from one monotonic source, add the timeout duration in compatible units, and compare later readings from that same source against the resulting deadline. Alternatively, record a monotonic start time and check whether the elapsed difference has reached the timeout.

Python’s sched documentation illustrates this design: its default scheduler is sched.scheduler(timefunc=time.monotonic, delayfunc=time.sleep), and scheduled numeric time values must be compatible with the configured timefunc. That documentation is for Python 3.16.0a0, a prerelease version; verify details against the stable Python version you target.

  • Keep both readings in the same clock domain; do not compare a monotonic deadline directly with a wall-clock timestamp.
  • Keep units consistent. A value in seconds cannot be compared as though it were milliseconds.
  • When logging a timeout calculation, record the clock API and units used for both deadline creation and checking. A formatted wall-clock timestamp alone does not explain a calculation made with monotonic time.

Can changing the system clock break a timer?

It can affect timers explicitly based on realtime because their clock represents civil time. A monotonic timer is intended for elapsed-time measurement and does not shift when the system clock is updated. On Linux, choose CLOCK_MONOTONIC when suspended time should not count toward the timeout, or CLOCK_BOOTTIME when it should. This suspend distinction matters for a laptop that may sleep while a timeout is pending.

Why does my poller work locally but miss the deadline in production?

A wrong clock comparison is one possibility, but correct deadline arithmetic does not guarantee that code will run exactly on time. Python’s time.sleep documentation notes that the sleep can last longer than requested because of other system activity. The sched documentation also explains that a scheduler falls behind when actions take longer than the time available before the next event.

Separate these two questions while debugging: did the deadline calculation say the timeout had expired at the wrong moment, or did the timeout become due on time but the polling thread or callback run later? The second case is scheduling delay, not necessarily a clock-domain bug.

What should I check when debugging the deadline?

  1. Trace creation and checking. Identify the exact clock API and units used to create the deadline and to compare against it.
  2. Look for mixed domains or units. Search for a deadline calculated from an elapsed-time source but checked against realtime, as well as seconds-versus-milliseconds mismatches.
  3. Separate expiration from execution. Log when the timeout becomes due and when its callback actually runs; sleep and scheduler work can be delayed independently of clock choice.
  4. Decide how sleep should count. On Linux, use the documented suspend-aware CLOCK_BOOTTIME behavior if suspended time belongs in the timeout.
  5. Keep local monotonic values local. Do not send a raw monotonic reading across machines, processes with distinct clock epochs, or into a persisted queue as if it were a portable timestamp. Python leaves the reference point undefined; a distributed or persisted deadline needs a separately defined representation and protocol.

What this example does—and does not—establish

Python’s official documentation provides a clear example of how monotonic clocks and schedulers behave. It does not identify the language, operating system, poller, or root cause behind any particular incident. The same diagnostic distinction remains useful elsewhere: verify that the deadline and its check use a compatible clock, then investigate delays between a timer becoming due and its work actually running.
