The Phoenix is a powered lower-limb exoskeleton designed to help some people with spinal cord injury stand and walk with the device. In a 2021 study, 40 adults with injuries from T4 to L5 completed a supervised training and assessment program. That is evidence of device-assisted mobility in a specific study group—not proof that everyone with paralysis can walk independently or that the device restores neurological function. The often-repeated $40,000 price is from 2016 reporting, not a verified current price.
What the Phoenix exoskeleton does
Developed by US Bionics, which does business as SuitX, the Phoenix is a powered medical exoskeleton for the lower limbs. It supports standing and walking by combining powered movement at the hips with a knee mechanism that controls locking and unlocking. It is not a treatment that repairs a spinal cord injury.
The device described in the clinical study includes a torso module, rechargeable batteries, adjustable thigh and lower-leg links, and foot plates that fit inside shoes. The study describes a weight of 15 kg, including batteries. Gait parameters can be set by a practitioner using a tablet, while the wearer sends commands through a handheld two-button controller. The controller may be mounted on a crutch, walker, or parallel-bar rail during training; the study does not establish that one particular consumer support is required.
What the clinical study found
A multicenter, open-label, prospective study published in Frontiers in Neurology in 2021 enrolled 40 adults with spinal cord injuries at neurological levels T4–L5. Participants completed 20 supervised one-hour sessions. Investigators assessed measures including the 10-meter walk test, 6-minute walk test, and Timed Up and Go. The paper reported that all participants achieved Functional Independence Measure scores above 4 for transitional movements and walking, and that no serious adverse events were reported during the study protocol.

- EXOSKELETON FOR WALKING: Through the pendulum clock principle, it is revealed that human walking not only relies on leg muscles (active) but also requires natural gravity trends (passive). It provides users with the convenience of passive dynamic walk. Note: This product does not support the body and is only suitable for people who can stand alone (or stand with the help of equipment)
- ADJUSTABLE DESIGN: The bionic exoskeleton power aid can adjust the strength of weak, medium and strong through the knob, providing support for users' leg lifting and climbing. The adjustment of waist and leg circumference ensures more comfort and convenience during use
- NO BATTERY MOTOR REQUIRED: Our exoskeleton walker successfully bids farewell to charging and batteries. It does not require kinetic energy devices such as batteries or motors and obtains energy naturally. Even during use, it will not suddenly stop or shut down
- THREE OPTIONS: Our walking aids provide left leg, right leg and left and right leg options. The diverse options and advanced bionic reinforced support system provide people with improves stability and mobility when hiking or climbing steps
- MULTIFUNCTIONAL EXOSKELETON ERGONOMIC WALKER: Helps elderly people with weak legs and feet due to disease, people who need to walk for a long time help lift their legs and walk. It is suitable for travel, shopping, slow walking and provides assistance to people who need various mobility challenges
Those results describe performance with the exoskeleton in a structured, supervised program. They do not show that participants recovered the ability to walk without it, that the device works equally well for all spinal cord injuries, or that every eligible person will have the same outcome. The paper reported different outcomes by injury characteristics: participants with incomplete injuries had higher Functional Independence Measure scores, faster walking speed, and higher WISCI-II scores across measures. Neurological injury level was also associated with walking speed and functional outcomes.
Who was studied—and who was not
Eligibility was limited. Participants were adults, weighed no more than 200 pounds, had healthy skin where the device contacted the body, and could stand with a device such as a standing frame. Conditions that made exoskeleton use unsafe and certain symptoms related to standing were exclusion criteria. These study criteria do not determine whether Phoenix is suitable for a particular person; that requires an individual clinical assessment.

How to interpret the evidence
The study was supported in part by US Bionics, which provided the Phoenix devices. The authors disclosed that some held intellectual property and patents related to the device. These disclosures are relevant context when weighing the findings; they do not, by themselves, invalidate the results.
FDA status and what clearance means
The FDA record K183152 identifies Phoenix as a device from US Bionics, Inc. (doing business as SuitX) and records a “Substantially Equivalent (SESE)” 510(k) decision dated April 17, 2019. The FDA’s powered-exoskeleton classification describes these devices as prescription devices for medical purposes. A 510(k) substantial-equivalence decision is a regulatory finding about the device; it is not proof of a cure, a promise of a particular outcome, or confirmation that the device is appropriate for a specific individual.

Is the Phoenix still available, and does it cost $40,000?
WIRED reported a $40,000 price for Phoenix in 2016. That figure is historical and should not be treated as a current quote. SUITX’s current public-facing page emphasizes industrial exoskeletons and does not establish whether the Phoenix is currently for sale, supported, or available through a medical-device supplier. Anyone exploring access would need to confirm current availability, service, and total cost directly with the company or a qualified supplier.
