Choose solo if you want to control the pace and face the trials without coordinating with other players. Choose co-op if you want shared scares and teamwork with friends. The Outlast Trials supports both, but the available evidence does not show that either mode is always easier or more enjoyable.

What changes between solo and co-op?

Solo gives you control over the pace

When you play alone, you can decide when to move, hide, or take a moment to plan without waiting for a group. That makes solo a natural fit if you prefer to experience the horror on your own terms. This is a practical difference in how you play, not a developer guarantee that solo trials are easier or balanced the same way in every mode.

Co-op adds coordination and shared play

The Outlast Trials is designed as cooperative PvE for up to four players. Game director Alex Charbonneau described it as a cooperative experience in which Reagents take part in experiments together (PlayStation Blog, July 16, 2024). With companions, communication and teamwork become part of the experience, alongside the shared scares. A group may suit you better if you enjoy coordinating, but having teammates does not automatically make a run easier.

Can you play The Outlast Trials solo?

Yes. The PlayStation listing says players can go through trials alone or in teams, and Epic lists solo play as well as parties of two, three, or four (PlayStation Store; Epic Games Store). The game includes stealth, hiding, escape, and tools that can support stealth or fleeing, so solo is a supported way to play—not merely a workaround for lacking a group.

Solo difficulty has also received developer attention. Red Barrels said players reported a difficulty increase after the tutorial and documented solo-related changes, including a three-chance system and solo-only Respawn Pills (Red Barrels developer notes). Those notes show how the studio responded at the time; they do not establish that every current trial or mode is equally comfortable for solo players. Check the current patch information and in-game Trial Details for the mode you plan to enter.

Which mode fits your preferences?

If you care most about… Better starting choice Why
Setting your own pace Solo You can proceed without coordinating with other players.
Sharing scares and communicating Co-op The game supports cooperative PvE for groups of up to four.
Playing without a ready-made group Solo Official store listings support completing trials alone.
Teamwork as part of the challenge Co-op Playing with companions makes communication and coordination part of the session.

This is a preference-based comparison, not a ranking by win rate: the cited product and developer information does not provide controlled evidence that one mode is easier, more frightening, or more fun for everyone.

Difficulty and mode rules can change the decision

Check the options for the program you are entering

A Red Barrels announcement dated July 19, 2024 listed Introductory, Standard, Intense, and Psychosurgery difficulty options for Program Genesis, Weekly Therapies, and Special Therapies (Steam announcement, July 19, 2024). These labels describe the options documented in that announcement, not a promise that every mode uses the same settings today. Check the current Trial Details screen before choosing a challenge level.

Rank #2
The Quarry - PlayStation 5
  • When the sun goes down on the last night of summer camp, nine teenage counselors are plunged into an unpredictable night of horror.
  • The only thing worse than the blood-drenched locals and creatures hunting them are the unimaginable choices you must make to help them survive.
  • Play as each of the nine camp counselors in a thrilling cinematic tale, where every decision shapes your unique story from a tangled web of possibilities. Any character can be the star of the show—or die before daylight comes.

Invasion has its own party and scaling rules

Invasion is a separate case: an official announcement says it supports solo or groups of two, three, or four, and that difficulty scales as players complete more Invasion matches (Steam announcement). Do not assume that this match-based scaling applies to other Trials or programs.

Check your platform’s online requirements

Platform details affect access, particularly if you plan to play online with others:

  • PlayStation: The store listing covers PS4 and PS5, requires online play, and lists up to four online players. It also notes DualSense wireless controller vibration for the PS5 version. Store details can vary by territory or change (PlayStation Store).
  • Xbox: The listing specifies online co-op for two to four players, cross-platform co-op, and a qualifying Game Pass subscription for console online multiplayer. Check the current listing for the subscription tier and terms in your region (Xbox Store).

Make your choice

  • Pick solo if you prefer independent pacing and want to play without group coordination.
  • Pick co-op if you have companions and enjoy communicating, coordinating, and experiencing the horror together.
  • Before starting, check the selected mode’s current Trial Details and any platform-specific online requirements.
