What was OpenJDK’s Java release plan for 2025?
The year’s two feature releases were JDK 24 and JDK 25. Oracle’s JDK 24 release notes, published March 18, 2025, called it the 15th feature release delivered on time under Java’s six-month cadence. Oracle said it would update JDK 24 until September 2025, when Oracle JDK 25 superseded it. JDK 24 was non-LTS; Oracle’s support roadmap identifies JDK 25, released in September 2025, as LTS.
“OpenJDK” refers to the open-source Java development project and its community. The release sequence describes the platform’s feature releases, but support schedules and licensing terms depend on the distributor of the JDK build. Oracle’s JDK support roadmap, for example, applies to Oracle’s offerings, not every OpenJDK provider.
What changes were announced for JDK 25?
Oracle’s JDK 25 announcement highlighted three language changes. These are examples, not a complete inventory of the release.

- JEP 507, Primitive Types in Patterns,
instanceof, andswitch(Third Preview): continues work to make primitive values usable in pattern matching and related constructs. It is explicitly a third preview, so teams should check the release documentation and their tools’ support before relying on it. - JEP 511, Module Import Declarations: allows declarations that can simplify the use of types from modular libraries.
- JEP 512, Compact Source Files and Instance Main Methods: provides a simpler way to write small programs, with a smoother entry point for beginners.
These changes show both language evolution and a focus on making Java easier to approach. Whether they benefit an existing application depends on its code, dependencies and build tooling.

These are Oracle’s figures, not an independent audit or a count of all community activity. Oracle describes Java releases as the result of contributions from individuals and organizations across OpenJDK.
How should teams choose a JDK release and distribution?
Separate two decisions: which Java features the application needs, and which distributor’s build and support arrangement is appropriate. An LTS label alone does not establish whether a particular application is ready to upgrade or what support it will receive.

- Identify the needed features. Check whether a release contains language or runtime capabilities your application will use, and confirm preview-feature status where relevant.
- Test compatibility. Oracle’s JDK 24 release notes distinguish source, binary and behavioral compatibility issues. Test the application and its dependencies rather than assuming compatibility from a release label.
- Compare update horizons. Check the intended update period and support terms for the specific distributor and JDK build.
- Review licensing. Read the chosen vendor’s applicable license; do not treat Oracle JDK terms as universal OpenJDK policy.
What comes after JDK 25?
Oracle’s support roadmap, updated September 15, 2026, says Oracle intends to issue future LTS releases every two years and lists Java 29 in September 2027 as the next planned LTS release. These are Oracle’s plans and may change; they are not commitments on behalf of other OpenJDK distributors.
