Quick Insert puts search, insertion, and writing tools beside the document or chat you’re working in. If your Chromebook has a dedicated Quick Insert key, press it; if not, Google documents Launcher + F or Google + F as keyboard alternatives. The adjustment is mainly learning where the new menu fits into a familiar typing workflow—not buying a new Chromebook.

What Quick Insert does

Quick Insert opens a menu in the current doc or chat. It can help you add links, files, emoji, emoticons, symbols, and GIFs, and it can surface writing suggestions through Help me write. It can also search for web links and YouTube videos, and retrieve recently viewed YouTube videos and documents. Google describes the feature and its current controls in its Quick Insert help page.

Rather than switching away from your work to find an item, you can search from the menu. Quick Insert searches across Google Drive, your Chromebook, and the web. Categories such as Open tabs and GIFs let you narrow a search to that type of result. As you type, the menu offers suggestions; select the result you want and press Enter to insert it into the open doc or chat.

How to try Quick Insert in a document or chat

  1. Open a doc or chat. Put yourself in the place where you want to add content.
  2. Open Quick Insert. Press the dedicated Quick Insert key if your keyboard has one. Otherwise press Launcher + F or Google + F.
  3. Search or browse. Type a query for a link, file, or other item, or choose a category such as GIFs to limit the results.
  4. Insert a result. Select the suggestion you want and press Enter. It is added to the open doc or chat.

For a first try, search for an item you already know you want to add—such as a file or web link. That makes it easier to see how the menu’s suggestions and Enter-to-insert behavior work before relying on it in a fast-moving conversation.

How to assign Quick Insert to another key

If your keyboard has a key you would rather use for Quick Insert, Google’s documented settings path is:

Settings > Device > Keyboard and inputs > Customize keyboard keys

Select the key you want to customize, then choose Quick Insert from the dropdown. Menu wording and available key choices may depend on your Chromebook and ChromeOS version.

Do you need a Chromebook with a dedicated Quick Insert key?

No. Google says the dedicated key first launched on the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus, but its October 2024 announcement also specified keyboard-shortcut access for existing Chromebook users. The physical key makes the menu easier to reach; it is not a requirement for using Quick Insert.

  • 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
  • Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
  • Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver

If you are choosing hardware specifically because you want a dedicated key, the Galaxy Chromebook Plus is the first model Google announced with one. For a Chromebook you already own, try the documented shortcut before considering a hardware change. The feature’s usefulness depends more on whether you want quick access to its insertion and search tools than on having a special key.

Which Quick Insert capabilities may vary

Google’s June 2025 Chromebook update promoted the key or shortcut for custom image creation, AI writing help, GIFs and emoji, recent URLs, and file access. Google also says that some features are available only on select devices, languages, and countries, and that online features require an internet connection. Those caveats matter especially for AI-assisted tools: do not assume every Quick Insert option will appear or work on every Chromebook or in every region.

Making the keyboard change feel natural

  • Use the shortcut or physical key while a doc or chat is open, so the result goes into the work context you intend.
  • Start with a repeatable task, such as inserting a link or finding a file, rather than trying every menu item at once.
  • Use a category when you already know the kind of result you need; categories such as GIFs and Open tabs can narrow the search.
  • Customize a key only if that suits your existing keyboard habits. Otherwise, the default shortcut is enough to try the feature.

Quick Insert is best understood as an in-context menu for finding and adding things while you type. The dedicated key is a convenience; the shortcut means the workflow is available without changing computers.
