A Wi-Fi printer is a networked device, so its possible communications depend on the printer’s settings and how your router connects devices. That does not mean it can automatically read every file or access every device in your home. “Can see everything” is a useful warning about potential network reachability—not evidence of unrestricted access or a printer compromise.
What a printer can reach depends on your network
Devices on a home network may be able to communicate with one another, but the connections available to a printer depend on network rules and the services enabled on the devices. Being connected to Wi-Fi alone does not establish that a printer can open files on a computer or that anyone has accessed it.
One way to limit unnecessary pathways is network segmentation: placing groups of devices—such as printers and other IoT equipment—on a different network from personal computers. CISA describes guest Wi-Fi as a possible simple way to separate groups in a home network, while noting that configuration can be more complex in some setups. A network called “guest” does not guarantee the same isolation on every router, so check what your model actually does. CISA’s network-segmentation guidance
Check whether a guest or IoT network fits your printer
- Look at your router’s options. Consult its manual or support documentation for a guest or IoT network and what devices on it can reach. Do not assume that a separate network name means devices are isolated from your main network.
- Check printing and discovery requirements. Read your router and printer documentation to see whether the printer can be found and used from computers on another network. Discovery and printing can be affected by the separation; there is no universal behavior across router and printer models.
- Make the change only if the separation works for your needs. Follow the exact instructions for your equipment rather than relying on a generic menu path. After setup, verify that the computers and other devices you use can still discover the printer and print normally.
- If something stops working, consult the manuals again. Confirm which network each device is connected to and whether the router’s isolation settings allow the communication your printer requires. If you cannot preserve both separation and the functions you need, use the router and printer makers’ guidance to choose an appropriate configuration.
For a more technical example of the same principle, NIST’s MUD approach allows a network to permit communications needed for an IoT device’s intended function and block other traffic. This depends on compatible device and network mechanisms; it is not a setting available on every consumer router. NIST SP 1800-15

Keep the printer itself maintained
Network separation is one layer, not a replacement for the printer maker’s security guidance. Check your model’s documentation for firmware updates, changing default or administrator passwords, and disabling features you do not use. HP’s consumer guidance recommends these kinds of steps and also discusses separating less-secure IoT devices; treat it as vendor advice, and follow the instructions for your own printer if they differ. HP’s home-printer security guidance
Secure onboarding and ongoing device management are also broader IoT security concerns. NIST SP 1800-36 discusses verifying device and network identity and managing device posture over its lifecycle; it is background on the principle, not a home-printer setup recipe. NIST SP 1800-36

What these changes can—and cannot—tell you
Separating a printer from computers can reduce the network pathways available to it, depending on the router’s actual configuration. It cannot make a home network invulnerable, and these recommendations do not establish that any particular printer is compromised. The cited guidance does not quantify how much a consumer network change reduces risk for home printers.
