The Magical Amazing Robot is a mechanical trivia toy: turn its pointer toward a question, move it to the answer area, and hidden magnets rotate it toward the paired answer. The apparent mind-reading is a clever physical trick, not electronics. The game is commonly associated with the 1950s, though the date is reported in retailer history rather than confirmed by a manufacturer archive.
What is The Magical Amazing Robot?
It is a tabletop question-and-answer game built around a small plastic robot with a pointer and weighted base, a question circle, and a separate answer surface. A player chooses a question—often about subjects such as nature, history, or sports—then moves the robot to the answer area to reveal the response.
The name varies across versions and listings. The older game is described as Merit’s Magic Robot or The Amazing Magic Robot; newer listings use names such as The Magical Amazing Robot. Those names do not by themselves establish that two copies have identical components.
How does the robot know the answer?
- Place the robot at the question circle and turn its pointer toward the chosen question.
- Lift or move the robot to the answer circle.
- Release it. Magnets hidden in the toy and answer area pull the robot into alignment with the answer paired to that question.
Max Maxfield’s EE Times account describes the robot’s pointer, weighted base, question circle, and mirrored answer surface. In his Hackster explanation, he identifies a bar magnet in the robot’s base and another beneath the answer circle. The question-to-answer layout uses a fixed angular offset; Maxfield gives that offset as 135 degrees. The magnets make the robot rotate to the correct position, creating the illusion that it has worked out the answer.

- SPECIAL REMINDER: Because the robot is purely handmade and retro-style, it will not move very sensitively, its arms and other structures will be relatively fragile, and it looks old and scratched on the surface. Please know that this is normal. Be careful not to throw and hurt it.
- Craft supplies for collectors. Classic memories of retro robots, let time stop in the most beautiful place.
- Wind it up and watch the cute little robot wobble and walk around.
- The vintage robot is your best gift for birthday, party, Christmas, Halloween, festival, collector, etc.
- Material: Tin Metal, Robot Size: 4.8" x 2" x 1.6"
There is no need for a battery or electronic sensor: the effect comes from the arrangement of the magnets and the printed question-and-answer positions.
Is it really a 1950s toy?
A 2012 retailer article says Merit’s original Magic Robot first went into production in the early 1950s. That is a reported date, not a date verified here against a manufacturer record or contemporaneous archive. Maxfield wrote in 2013 that the example he had received was, in his view, probably a modern reproduction. So a copy sold under a retro name may reproduce the classic design without itself being an original from the 1950s.

- Edition and identity: Compare the maker, product name, and model number where available; distinguish an original from a reproduction when the seller makes that claim.
- Completeness: Confirm that the robot, question wheels or sheets, boards, and instructions expected for that edition are included.
- Condition: Inspect the pointer, base, and magnetic mechanism. Damage or missing pieces can prevent the toy from aligning or make it difficult to play.
- Seller terms: Check who is selling it, whether it is actually available, and the return conditions. Retail stock and marketplace listings change, so an older page or resale listing does not establish present availability.
Current-style retailer pages show that retro editions have been listed, but the available evidence does not establish a dependable current price range or stock status. Treat any individual listing as a snapshot and verify its details directly before buying.
