That is a higher entry point than the $599 M4 configuration Apple had previously offered: TechRadar reported that it was discontinued by May 2026, leaving a $799 16GB/512GB model as the entry option. The new prices are Apple’s launch prices, not verified live retailer quotes.
How much does the Mac mini cost now?
Apple announced U.S. starting prices of $899 for Mac mini with M6 and $1,699 for Mac mini with M5 Pro on August 25, 2026. Apple said deliveries and store availability would begin September 22, 2026. These figures describe the announced starting prices; a buyer’s final price depends on configuration, region, and any current retailer offer. Apple’s announcement is the source for the launch prices and schedule.
The M5 Pro’s $1,699 starting price is $800 above the M6 starting price. That gap buys a different performance tier, not simply a newer or more expensive version of the same entry configuration; whether it is useful depends on the work you need the computer to do.
Why the entry price rose
The price change happened in stages. TechRadar reported on May 1, 2026, that Apple had discontinued the former $599 M4 configuration and that the 16GB memory/512GB storage model at $799 had become the U.S. entry option. TechRadar later described the M6’s $899 entry price as a $100 increase over that immediately preceding $799 starting price. Those historical comparisons are TechRadar’s reporting; a contemporaneous Apple price record for the May change is not established here. TechRadar’s May report and its report on the M6 price increase provide that account.

A separate historical figure should not be mistaken for a direct comparison: Apple’s October 29, 2024 announcement listed a starting price of €729 in Ireland for the M4/M4 Pro generation, with 16GB of memory. That was a launch price in a different country and year, so it does not establish a like-for-like trend against today’s U.S. prices. Apple’s 2024 Ireland announcement gives that historical price.
What makes the M6 Mac mini capable?
Apple’s August 2026 announcement describes M6 performance through selected comparisons with M4 Mac mini models. It claims up to 4.8 times faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio and up to 1.5 times faster spreadsheet calculations in Excel versus M4. Apple also claims up to twice the ray-traced gaming performance versus M4. These are Apple-reported results for named workloads, not independent benchmark findings, and they should not be generalized into a universal speed multiplier. Apple’s M6 announcement contains the comparisons.

For day-to-day buying, the more practical question is whether the M6 configuration you choose has enough memory and storage for your projects and expected use. Compare the available configurations at purchase time rather than assuming that the starting price includes the capacity you need.
When does the M5 Pro make sense?
Apple positions the $1,699-starting M5 Pro model for more demanding work, including app development, video rendering, scientific simulations, 3D workflows, and larger local AI models. It supports up to 64GB of unified memory, according to Apple’s announcement. That upper memory limit may matter when projects keep large assets or models in memory, but the chip name alone does not show that every buyer needs the Pro tier.

- Consider M6 if your work fits the M6 model’s available configuration and you do not need the Pro model’s added capability or connectivity.
- Consider M5 Pro if your sustained creative or technical workloads can use its higher tier or its support for up to 64GB unified memory.
- Compare the configured totals for the memory and storage you actually need. The two launch starting prices are not necessarily prices for equivalent capacities.
What connectivity should you compare?
Apple’s 2026 announcement lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, 2.5Gb Ethernet with a 10Gb option, HDMI, two front USB-C ports, a headphone jack, and three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports for M6. For M5 Pro, Apple lists three rear Thunderbolt 5 ports. If you depend on fast wired networking or Thunderbolt accessories, check the exact configuration and ports offered for the model you plan to order.
Do not carry over specifications from the previous generation as if they describe M6. Apple’s M4-generation specifications list a 5-by-5-inch footprint, front USB-C ports, HDMI, Ethernet, and three rear Thunderbolt ports: Thunderbolt 4 for M4 and Thunderbolt 5 for M4 Pro. That M4 page also lists configurable memory, SSD, and 10Gb Ethernet options; these are M4-generation details, not confirmation of current M6 configuration choices. Apple’s M4 Mac mini specifications identify that generation’s hardware.

Is the Mac mini worth buying?
It can be worth buying if you want a compact desktop and the chosen chip, memory, storage, and ports fit your actual workload. The M6 starts at a higher U.S. launch price than the preceding $799 entry point reported by TechRadar, while M5 Pro is aimed at heavier work and starts considerably higher. Treat the model decision as a workload-and-configuration choice, not a simple judgment that the most expensive chip is automatically the best value.
Before buying, compare same-region offers for the same memory, storage, and chip tier. Apple’s launch prices do not establish the price or stock status at a retailer today, and the historical Ireland price is not a valid substitute for a current U.S. comparison.
