Younger listeners are buying older models for nostalgia, focused music listening, and a way to carry music without feeds and notifications. Marketplace figures show more searches and sales for some iPods, but they do not establish a return to mainstream adoption or a retreat from streaming.
Why are people buying iPods again?
For some younger listeners, the appeal is partly nostalgia for a device they remember from childhood. Others want music without the interruptions and temptations of a smartphone: notifications, social feeds, and algorithmically generated playlists. An iPod also makes the listener choose and manage a finite music library rather than treating music as one feature of an always-connected phone.
Cal Newport, a computer science professor and author of Digital Minimalism, described the appeal to Axios this way: “All you can do with an iPod, for example, is listen to music.” Libby Rodney, chief strategy officer at The Harris Poll, characterized the manual effort of loading music as “a return to finding meaning in friction.” These are interpretations of why the device resonates, not evidence that iPod use itself improves mental health.
Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, told the Associated Press that some younger users are seeking to reduce smartphone distraction, often in response to well-being concerns. That helps explain the device’s appeal, but it should not be read as a clinical finding or a guarantee that switching devices will improve anyone’s well-being.

What evidence shows an iPod comeback?
Reports from eBay and refurbished-device marketplace Back Market point to increased interest in particular models. The figures measure different things in different places and time periods, so they should not be combined into one overall market-growth rate.

These are marketplace-specific indicators, not a single independent measure of global demand. A sharp percentage rise in a particular model or category does not, by itself, show that iPods have returned to mainstream use.

Is the iPod comeback replacing streaming?
No. In the U.S., on-demand audio streaming reached 1.4 trillion song streams in 2025, up from 1.3 trillion in 2024, according to Luminate figures cited by Axios. The reported iPod interest is better understood as a niche or complementary choice: a dedicated player for people who want a different listening routine, alongside phones and streaming services.
Can you still buy an iPod?
Apple discontinued the iPod line in 2022. Buyers should expect to find used or refurbished devices on resale marketplaces and from specialist sellers, not new iPods sold by Apple. Treat listings advertised as “new” carefully: the Associated Press reported buyer feedback describing used or refurbished devices in counterfeit packaging. Check the seller’s description, photographs, condition, and return terms rather than relying on the listing title.

Which iPod should I buy?
The right model depends on how you want to choose music, how much library you want to carry, and whether you need modern apps. Generation matters: connectors, software support, and usability differ even within a model family.

Can I use Apple Music on an old iPod?
Do not assume a non-Touch iPod can use an Apple Music streaming subscription. Plan on managing a library of local music files for those models. A computer is part of the setup: the Associated Press says Windows users can manage iPods with iTunes, while Mac users use the Apple Music app to manage files. iPod Touch models run iOS, but their age and software ceiling can limit which apps and services work.
What cable does my iPod use?
The connector depends on the model and generation. Later iPod Touch generations use Lightning; the Associated Press reports that other models use a 30-pin cable. Verify the exact device before ordering a charging or sync cable—“iPod” alone is not enough to determine compatibility.

Can an old iPod battery be replaced?
Battery condition is a key part of buying a used iPod, and replacement parts are model-specific. Apple repair service is limited to the final two iPod Touch generations, according to the Associated Press; older models may require a specialist or owner-sourced parts. Confirm availability and compatibility for the exact generation before buying a device on the assumption that it can be repaired.
Some enthusiasts install Rockbox for additional features and alternate file support. It is an optional project, not a requirement for ordinary listening, and compatibility and setup depend on the device.
