A sudden feeling of repulsion toward a partner is often called “the ick”: a visceral negative reaction to a behavior, trait, or mannerism. It can happen early in dating or years into a relationship, but the feeling by itself does not prove that you are incompatible or reveal why it happened. Several explanations are possible, and none is a settled, universal cause.
What does “the ick” mean?
Cleveland Clinic describes the ick as “a visceral, negative reaction to someone’s behavior, personality traits or mannerisms.” A small, seemingly trivial moment can prompt it, and it may arise during the first minutes of a date or after years together. The term describes a reaction; it is not a diagnosis.
That reaction can be confusing because it may feel immediate and intense even when the trigger seems minor. Its intensity does not, on its own, establish whether the trigger points to an important incompatibility, a passing irritation, or something else.
Why might you suddenly feel repulsed by your partner?
There is no single established explanation. The possibilities below are ways to think about the response, not a checklist for diagnosing yourself or your partner.

Disgust sensitivity
A 2025 study by Collisson, Saunders, and Yin examined 125 single adults. Its indexed abstract reports that higher disgust sensitivity was associated with both the likelihood and frequency of experiencing the ick. This early finding does not show that disgust sensitivity causes an individual person’s reaction, or explain the experience for daters as a whole. Read the study abstract.
Psychology Today’s report on the study says that 75 percent of women and 57 percent of men in its sample reported experiencing the ick. Those figures describe that study’s sample, not the share of women or men generally who experience it. The report also discusses associations with narcissism and perfectionism; these should not be read as proof that either trait causes the reaction. Read Psychology Today’s report.

Fast associations and expectations
Georgetown neuroendocrinologist and professor Tom Sherman has suggested that people may quickly match a behavior with a negative association and interpret it as a sign of incompatibility. This is a proposed account, not established neuroscience or an explanation that applies to every ick. Sherman also notes that people may differ in how strongly they respond. Reservations, anxiety, or moving too quickly
Cleveland Clinic psychologist Chivonna Childs says that someone who has reservations or feels a relationship is moving too fast may focus on a disliked detail as a reason to leave. TIME also reports a clinician’s view that fixating on a partner’s quirk may sometimes reflect avoidance or relational anxiety. Disconnection or unmet needs in an established relationship
If the reaction emerges after years together, it may be useful to consider the wider relationship rather than treating the trigger as an isolated quirk. Cleveland Clinic says a sudden ick in a long-term relationship may point to a deeper disconnect or unmet needs. That possibility does not mean every change in attraction signals a relationship problem; it is a reason to examine what else is happening between you.
Learned triggers and sound sensitivity
Conditioning and misophonia have been discussed as possible factors that can make certain behaviors or sounds aversive. An ordinary feeling of the ick is not, by itself, evidence of misophonia or another clinical condition. Read the Conversation article republished by Phys.org.

How to tell a passing turn-off from a deeper concern
Look at the context and pattern, not just how strong the first reaction felt. These distinctions can help you decide what deserves attention:

| Trigger | Was it a surface-level mannerism, a difference in values, or behavior that was degrading, abusive, or otherwise harmful? |
| Recurrence | Was this a one-time response, a persistent reaction to one partner, or a pattern that appears across partners? |
| Relationship context | Is there a broader mismatch, unresolved tension, or unmet need that the moment brought into focus? |
An ick and a red flag are not interchangeable. A trivial habit may be a turn-off; degrading, abusive, or otherwise harmful conduct raises a different concern. Childs cautions: “If a person is degrading you, calling you names, abusing you mentally, emotionally or spiritually, those are real things that affect your morals and values.” Do not dismiss mistreatment as a harmless quirk or try to talk yourself out of taking it seriously.

What can you do when the feeling appears?
- Name the specific moment. What did your partner do or say? Separating the event from the strength of your reaction can make the issue easier to understand.
- Ask what kind of concern it raises. Is it a surface-level irritation, a values mismatch, or a question of respect and safety? Those call for different responses.
- Notice whether it is a pattern. Consider whether it has happened repeatedly with this partner, only once, or across different relationships. A recurring reaction may be worth exploring, but it does not identify a cause by itself.
- For a minor issue, consider perspective and conversation. If the relationship matters to you and the behavior is not harmful, Cleveland Clinic suggests taking stock of the relationship and approaching a conversation without judgment. TIME also mentions journaling about a partner’s positive traits as one way to reflect; neither reflection nor conversation guarantees that attraction will return.
- Seek support if the issue persists. If ongoing irritation or disconnection is distressing, couples therapy may help you explore the relationship context. It is an option, not a guaranteed fix for the ick.
What is known—and what remains uncertain
The available evidence does not establish a universal cause, a general-population estimate of how often people experience the ick, or a reliable recovery rate. Sherman has noted that there is “not much substantive research on this dating phenomenon.” The 2025 study offers an early evidence base for an association with disgust sensitivity, but its sample of 125 single adults cannot explain every person’s experience. No validated treatment specifically for the ick is established in the cited sources.
