The Humane AI Pin was a screen-light wearable that aimed to handle selected smartphone tasks through voice, a camera and a small image projected onto your palm. It did not replace a phone for most everyday needs, and its core online services shut down on February 28, 2025. Its launch-era feature list and prices are now historical, not current buying advice.
What was the Humane AI Pin?
The Ai Pin was a small device worn on clothing, designed to let users ask an AI assistant questions and perform selected phone-like tasks without taking out a smartphone. Its outward-facing unit held a camera, microphones, speaker, touchpad and projector. A magnetic Battery Booster attached behind the clothing to help power the device.
Rather than use a conventional screen, it relied mainly on voice and a green palm projection Humane called the “Laser Ink Display.” The concept made the Pin part wearable camera, part assistant and part projected interface—not a miniature smartphone display.
What could it do at launch?
Launch-era descriptions included spoken AI queries, questions about what the camera could see, speech translation, calls and messages, music streaming, and photo or short-video capture. These capabilities depended in part on Humane’s online services and cellular connectivity; they should not be read as a description of what a Pin can do today.

In an April 2024 review, WIRED’s Julian Chokkattu described trying those functions with launch-era software. He found the projector difficult to navigate and hard to see in daylight, encountered a heat warning, and noted inconsistent answers and fewer useful integrations than a smartphone. Those are one reviewer’s hands-on observations, not a standardized test or a claim that every unit behaved identically.
Could the AI Pin replace a smartphone?
It was designed to reduce reliance on a conventional phone, but its feature set and interface did not amount to a general-purpose smartphone replacement. The comparison is less about whether a wearable can answer a question and more about how reliably it handles the many different jobs people expect from a phone.
| Comparison area | What the Ai Pin offered | What matters in a smartphone |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday tasks and integrations | Selected AI, communication, translation and media functions; WIRED’s reviewer found gaps in integrations and everyday uses. | A broader app ecosystem and access to many services in one device. |
| Speed and reliability | Voice-led interactions and AI responses; WIRED reported inconsistent answers in the review. | A familiar screen-based interface and apps, though performance varies by device and service. |
| Seeing and checking information | Voice responses and a palm projection, which WIRED found hard to use in daylight. | A persistent screen for reading, reviewing and correcting information. |
| Power and connectivity | Battery Booster hardware and dependence on Humane’s connected services for core functions. | Power and connectivity needs vary by phone, carrier and app. |
| Cost | At launch, $699 plus a reported $24 monthly subscription for connectivity and service access. | Costs vary by device, carrier plan and apps. |
| Social comfort and recording awareness | A Trust Light signaled camera or microphone activity, but WIRED reported that people sometimes mistook the device for a body camera. | Phones are familiar to most people, though recording with any device still raises consent and privacy concerns. |
This is a comparison of design and reported review experience, not a controlled head-to-head test. WIRED’s reviewer ultimately preferred a smartphone’s screen and found little reason to use the Pin instead of a phone.
What happened to the AI Pin?
Humane’s consumer FAQ said the Pin would stop connecting to the company’s servers at 12 p.m. Pacific Time on February 28, 2025. TechCrunch reported that the shutdown ended server-dependent calling, messaging, AI responses and cloud access. Humane also said new purchases were no longer available and customer data on its servers would be permanently deleted.

As a result, the device lost the connected services that supported its central use cases. The available evidence does not establish an official revival, an independent replacement service or a supported offline mode that restores those functions. TechCrunch reported that refunds were limited to customers still within the 90-day return window.

Not as the connected AI and communication device Humane sold. Its core server-dependent functions—including AI queries, calls, messaging and cloud access—ended with the February 28, 2025 shutdown. The available evidence does not establish a supported way to restore them. A device that can no longer reach those services is not a practical smartphone alternative, and buying a used unit should not be treated as a way to regain the original experience.

What did it cost when it was available?
These are historical prices, not current offers. WIRED reported a launch price of $699 and a $24 monthly T-Mobile-powered subscription for cellular connectivity and service access. TechCrunch later reported that Humane reduced the price to $499 before stopping sales in February 2025.
Why call it a body camera?
The Pin’s camera faced outward while the device was worn on clothing, making it visible to people around the wearer. Humane included a Trust Light intended to indicate when the camera or microphone was active. At launch, cofounder Imran Chaudhri told TIME, “We’ve got a device that is far more transparent than the one you’re using there,” referring to the reporter’s smartphone. That was the company’s argument for its signaling design; it does not prove that bystanders noticed the light or understood what the device was recording.

That illustrates a social-design problem for an always-worn camera: a technical recording indicator may not be enough to make a device’s purpose clear to nearby people.
