Our solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago when a dense cloud of interstellar gas and dust collapsed into a spinning disk. The Sun formed at the disk’s center; material circling it collided and gathered into planets, moons, and the smaller bodies that remain today. The broad picture is supported by the solar system’s orderly motions and by evidence in meteorites and spacecraft samples, though some details—such as what triggered the collapse and how planets later shifted orbits—remain theories rather than directly witnessed events.
How did the solar system form?
The leading account begins with a dense interstellar cloud of gas and dust. Gravity drew part of the cloud inward, and as it contracted, it spun faster and flattened into a rotating solar nebula: a central concentration surrounded by a disk of material. NASA dates this formation to about 4.6 billion years ago. A shockwave from a nearby supernova may have helped trigger the cloud’s collapse, but that is a possibility, not an established cause. NASA’s solar system overview summarizes the broad account.
The young Sun formed in the dense center. Remaining gas, dust, and rocky or icy grains orbited in the surrounding disk. Collisions and gravitational attraction allowed some material to clump into progressively larger bodies. The largest grew into planets, dwarf planets, and large moons; smaller surviving objects include asteroids, comets, meteoroids, and irregular moons.
What evidence supports this account?
The formation process is a reconstruction, not a sequence scientists watched happen. A key clue is that the planets orbit the Sun in the same general direction and close to a common plane, as expected if they formed from a rotating disk. Meteorites and samples returned by space missions also preserve chemical, physical, and magnetic clues about conditions in the ancient nebula. NASA outlines these lines of evidence in its overview of planetary systems.

Why are the inner and outer planets different?
Temperature and the materials available at different places in the young disk help explain the broad arrangement. Near the Sun, rocky materials could form the terrestrial planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. Farther out, Jupiter and Saturn became gas giants, while Uranus and Neptune are ice giants. These categories describe their broad compositions; the planets did not all form by an identical process or from identical ingredients. NASA’s solar system facts describe the planet classes and the broad formation picture.
What remains between and beyond the planets?
The asteroid belt
The asteroid belt lies between Mars and Jupiter and contains rocky remnants of solar system formation. NASA describes its material as having been unable to quite assemble into a planet. It is better understood as a surviving population of small bodies than as a single failed planet waiting to form.

The Kuiper Belt
Beyond Neptune is the Kuiper Belt, a thick, disk-like region of icy bodies. NASA places its inner edge near 30 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun and its main region’s outer edge around 50 AU; a scattered population reaches much farther. One AU is the average distance between Earth and the Sun. The region contains a range of icy objects, including dwarf planets, and is not a uniform ring with a sharp outer boundary. Neptune’s gravity has stirred the population. The details of how the giant planets moved and sculpted the belt are part of a well-supported theory, not a directly observed account of the ancient events. See NASA’s Kuiper Belt facts.
The Oort Cloud
Far beyond the Kuiper Belt, astronomers infer a vast, roughly spherical reservoir of icy bodies called the Oort Cloud. Unlike the Kuiper Belt’s disk-like structure, the Oort Cloud is expected to surround the solar system in all directions. Its existence and scale are inferred from models and the paths of long-period comets; it has not been directly observed. NASA describes it as a predicted population extending thousands to tens of thousands of AU from the Sun. That evidence status matters: the Oort Cloud is not a mapped region comparable to the catalogued objects of the Kuiper Belt. NASA’s Oort Cloud overview explains the inference and its connection to comets.

How to picture the solar system’s structure
A scale model can make the arrangement easier to understand, especially because a diagram that fits on a page cannot show both planet sizes and the enormous gaps between their orbits accurately. NASA JPL’s “Modeling the Structure of the Solar System” activity offers an educational way to explore that layout. Treat any model as a visual aid: unless its scale is explicitly specified, it should not be assumed to represent real distances or sizes proportionally.
