It was delivered in March 2022 and has been described by its operator as in commercial operation since spring 2022. Rather than carrying passengers or consumer fuel, ASAHI bunkers other ships with fuel oil.
What ASAHI is—and why an electric tanker carries fuel
ASAHI is a bunkering vessel: it transports marine fuel and supplies it to other ships. Its electric propulsion does not make the cargo electric; the vessel’s role is to bring fuel oil to ships operating in Tokyo Bay. That contrast is the defining point of the project: an electrically powered tanker supplies fuel to vessels.
In a March 27, 2020 announcement, Asahi Tanker Co., Ltd. and e5 Lab Inc. described the planned ship this way: “The vessel is a pure battery tanker powered by large-capacity lithium-ion batteries and will enter service in Tokyo Bay as a marine fuel supply vessel.” The companies called it the “world’s first pure battery tanker”; that is their description, rather than an independently adjudicated category. From “coming to Tokyo” to delivered and operating
The headline’s future tense is historical. Asahi Tanker announced the construction project in 2020, held ASAHI’s naming and launching ceremony in December 2021, and reported delivery on March 30, 2022. In January 2023, the company said ASAHI had been in commercial operation since the previous spring. The delivery announcement and the AKARI announcement document those milestones.

A dated company document also reports ASAHI’s first bunkering operation on a car carrier. That is evidence of a specific operation, not a full public record of its subsequent voyages or service performance. The sources cited here do not establish the vessel’s route, current operating status, or performance as of October 2026.

Earlier planning and launch-stage materials gave somewhat different values, including 499 tons, approximately 1,280 m³, 11 knots, and 3,500 kWh. Those are earlier figures and should not be combined with the delivery particulars as though they were one definitive specification set. The 2022 delivery release is the source for the figures above.
What “zero emissions” means in the company’s claims
Asahi Tanker and e5 Lab describe the fully electrified vessel as eliminating onboard operating emissions of CO₂, NOx, SOx, and soot. They also cite potential reductions in noise, vibration, and engine maintenance. These are company-described operating benefits; “zero emissions” here does not establish zero emissions across the battery’s manufacture, electricity generation, or the vessel’s full life cycle.

The available company material does not quantify lifecycle emissions, charging-related emissions, cost savings, range, charging time, or a measured comparison with a conventional tanker. It therefore supports describing ASAHI’s propulsion and the claimed onboard emissions scope, but not a numerical carbon or cost advantage. The project announcement outlines the companies’ claims.
Emergency power was proposed, not confirmed as deployed
Asahi Tanker’s 2020 announcement also discussed using electricity stored aboard the vessel to supply power on land during a disaster. The company said feasibility was being studied with Tokyo Electric Power Company Energy Partners. The material cited here does not document an actual emergency-power deployment, so this should be treated as a studied possibility rather than a demonstrated service. The announcement describes the proposal.

AKARI extends the Tokyo Bay bunkering project
ASAHI was not the only vessel in the project. In January 2023, Asahi Tanker announced AKARI as a second pure battery-electric tanker, also intended for bunkering and refueling services alongside ASAHI. The announcement establishes the operator’s intended role for AKARI, but the sources cited here do not provide a full comparative dataset for the two ships’ capacity, charging, range, costs, or operating performance. ASAHI demonstrates that a battery-electric vessel can be built and placed in commercial operation for a defined marine-fuel supply role, according to its operator’s reports. It does not, on the evidence available here, establish how battery tankers compare with conventional vessels across routes, duty cycles, charging infrastructure, lifecycle emissions, or economics. Those comparisons require consistent data on cargo capacity, battery capacity, speed, charging method, operating emissions scope, and service history.
