ESO’s Steam player count jumped in April 2026, then fell through September. That is a real, noticeable change in one platform’s activity—but it does not establish a broader revival. The public figures track concurrent players on Steam, not every PC launcher, PlayStation or Xbox, and they cannot tell us how many people play ESO overall.
What ESO’s player-count numbers measure
SteamCharts and Tracker Network report concurrent players using Steam data. Concurrent players are the people playing at the same time, as reflected in those trackers—not unique players over a month, active accounts, or a total population across the game’s platforms. Tracker Network explicitly limits its figures to Steam players. SteamCharts’ ESO charts and Tracker Network’s ESO page therefore offer a useful view of Steam activity, but not a complete census of ESO.
The sources available as of October 7, 2026, do not establish a current all-platform total. ESO is also available outside Steam, so extrapolating from Steam concurrency to the full player base would be misleading.
How ESO’s Steam player count changed in 2026
Both trackers show a sharp increase in April followed by lower monthly averages by September. Their figures are close but not identical, so each should be read as its own tracker’s series rather than combined into a single number.

| Calendar month | SteamCharts average concurrent players | SteamCharts month-over-month change | Tracker Network average concurrent players | Tracker Network month-over-month change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| April 2026 | 11,890.92 | +23.40% | 11,867 | +23.1% |
| September 2026 | 7,367.55 | -17.10% | 7,376 | -16.8% |
Each percentage compares that tracker’s April or September figure with its own prior month. The average is not a peak and does not represent the number of distinct people who played during the month. The trackers do not identify the cause of April’s increase, so it cannot be attributed to a particular update, event, or promotion on these figures alone.
Does the April jump mean ESO is having a renaissance?
It supports a narrower claim: Steam activity rose substantially in April 2026. But the subsequent decline through September means this series does not show a sustained climb across the rest of the period. Calling that an all-platform renaissance would go beyond the evidence.

The Steam all-time concurrent peak is also not a measure of current population. SteamCharts lists a peak of 49,061, while Tracker Network lists 49,142; neither surfaced figure specifies the date of that peak. The small difference is another reason to identify which tracker supplied a number, and the peak should not be confused with a monthly average or present-day player count. What the studio says about ESO’s future
In its statement titled “Continuing to Grow ESO With You,” the ESO team describes a seasonal model, player-requested features and changes, and work on new content through 2027 and beyond. Game Director Nick G is quoted as saying the team is not looking merely to maintain the game, but to grow it. Those remarks describe the studio’s stated direction and commitment to development; they are not a report of measured player growth. The Elder Scrolls Online forums.

What would establish a broader revival?
A convincing claim about ESO’s total population would need evidence that covers more than Steam. An official, dated all-platform statistic would be the clearest evidence; sustained activity trends over a longer interval or other dated primary evidence could also help establish whether the April bump became durable. Until then, the sound conclusion is limited: Steam saw a spring increase, but public figures cited here do not resolve how many people currently play ESO across platforms.
