Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe three main types of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) are passive standby (also called standby or offline), line-interactive, and double-conversion (often called online). They differ in how power reaches connected equipment during normal operation and what the UPS does when utility power fails or falls outside its acceptable range.
In brief, standby and line-interactive units switch the load to battery when input power exceeds their specified limits; a double-conversion UPS normally powers the load through AC-to-DC-to-AC conversion. The best fit depends on the equipment, required runtime, local electrical compatibility, and the specific model’s performance.
How the three UPS types compare
| Type | Normal power path | What happens when input is out of range | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passive standby (standby or offline) | Utility power feeds the load through a filter; the inverter waits. | The UPS switches the load to its inverter and battery. | Simple protection, but there is a transfer event and less continuous power conditioning. |
| Line-interactive | AC input and inverter operate in parallel; the inverter can regulate voltage and charge the battery. | The UPS disconnects the AC input and transfers the load to inverter and battery. | More voltage regulation than passive standby, but output frequency remains tied to input frequency. |
| Double-conversion (online) | Power normally passes through a rectifier/charger and inverter, converting AC to DC and back to AC. | The inverter continues supplying the load, using battery power if input fails. | Normal conversion mode provides stronger separation from input voltage and frequency variation; bypass operation can expose the load to input disturbances. |
“Offline” and “online” are common marketing terms, but they can be ambiguous. The Schneider Electric Electrical Installation Guide uses the IEC 62040-aligned terms “passive standby” and “double conversion.”
Passive standby UPS
In normal operation, utility power reaches the equipment through a filter while the inverter remains ready. If utility power fails or its voltage moves beyond the UPS’s specified tolerance, the unit switches to its inverter and battery.

The Electrical Installation Guide describes the transfer as very short—less than 10 ms—but that is a general guide figure, not a guarantee for every UPS. Passive standby units do not regulate frequency.
Line-interactive UPS
A line-interactive UPS connects its inverter in parallel with the AC input. In normal mode, it can regulate output voltage and charge the battery. Eaton describes this topology as using a voltage regulator to correct low or high input voltage. If input moves outside the unit’s acceptable range, a static switch disconnects the AC input and transfers the load to the inverter and battery.

Its output frequency follows the AC input frequency, so line-interactive regulation does not necessarily provide frequency conversion. Vertiv’s Canada-region FAQ gives 4–6 milliseconds as the transfer time for its line-interactive UPS products; do not treat that manufacturer-specific figure as a specification for other makers or models.
Double-conversion (online) UPS
During normal operation, a double-conversion UPS sends power through a rectifier/charger and then an inverter. The resulting AC output is normally supplied by the inverter whether the source is utility power or, after an input failure, the battery. The Electrical Installation Guide describes the battery transition as occurring without an interruption in output. ABB’s technical paper associates this topology with VFI (voltage and frequency independent) classification.

What bypass means
A static bypass can route power around the conversion electronics during a UPS fault, a load-current transient, or a load peak. Because the inverter is then out of the power path, an input disturbance may reach the load. Bypass is therefore a mode with a protection trade-off, not a guarantee of uninterrupted conditioning; synchronization and voltage compatibility also matter.
Which type is right for a computer, network, or server?
Choose based on the load’s tolerance for a transfer event, the quality of utility power, and whether frequency regulation or stronger isolation from input variation matters. Eaton’s examples place standby UPSs with desktop computers and home networks; line-interactive units with desktop, network, and AV equipment or office networks; and online double-conversion units with mission-critical data-center and server-room equipment. These are typical-use examples, not universal requirements.

- Desktop or home network: A passive standby model may be adequate when the goal is basic battery backup and the equipment can tolerate its transfer behavior. Consider line-interactive if voltage fluctuations are a concern.
- Office network or AV equipment: Line-interactive may suit loads that benefit from voltage regulation without requiring continuous double conversion.
- Server room or critical load: Consider double conversion when the load needs stronger isolation from input voltage and frequency variation, while checking how the model behaves in bypass.
These are starting points. Confirm the specific equipment’s power requirements and the selected UPS’s specifications before buying or installing it.

- List the equipment to protect. Add the connected equipment’s power draw and account for startup or inrush needs. Leave appropriate capacity headroom.
- Set the required runtime. Decide whether the UPS only needs to bridge brief outages or provide enough time for a safe shutdown or continued operation. Runtime depends on the UPS model and connected load; a higher VA rating alone does not establish longer battery runtime.
- Match local electrical requirements. Check the region’s input voltage and frequency, the UPS’s output, plug and outlet types, and whether hardwiring is required.
- Compare output and transfer behavior. Check the model’s topology, transfer specifications, voltage regulation, waveform, and whether the application requires frequency conversion.
- Check installation and lifecycle needs. Confirm the tower, rack, or convertible form factor fits the space and has adequate ventilation and service access. Verify replacement-battery compatibility, support for external battery modules, monitoring, and graceful-shutdown features where needed.
- Use the model’s runtime data. Consult the manufacturer’s runtime information for the exact UPS and load rather than estimating from capacity alone.
CyberPower’s selection guidance also emphasizes equipment load, required runtime, local voltage and outlet compatibility, and choosing topology according to protection and energy-efficiency needs. Features such as automatic voltage regulation, hot-swappable batteries, external battery modules, and network management are available only on applicable models; verify the exact product documentation.

Vertiv recommends keeping load below 80% and sizing new installations around 50–60% for typical IT applications. Those are Vertiv’s vendor recommendations, not universal engineering rules. Follow the applicable electrical requirements and the UPS manufacturer’s model-specific guidance for your installation.
