No: high-end audio is not disappearing, but the market around it is changing. Streaming now drives most recorded-music revenue, while vinyl continues to grow and premium audio makers are building products that connect physical records with networked listening. That is evidence of an active listening ecosystem—not proof that sales of expensive audio hardware are growing.

Recorded music is thriving, but that does not prove high-end hardware is

Keep two markets separate: recorded music and the equipment used to play it. IFPI reported global recorded-music trade revenue of US$29.6 billion in 2024. Streaming accounted for 69.0% of that revenue, generated more than US$20 billion, and paid-subscription revenue rose 9.5% year over year. These figures show where the music business earns its money; they do not measure sales or profitability of high-end speakers, amplifiers, turntables, or other components.

The U.S. figures tell a similar story about listening, not hardware. The RIAA reported US$11.5 billion in U.S. recorded-music wholesale revenue and 106.5 million paid-subscription accounts in 2025. A large audience for music is good context for audio companies, but it cannot establish how many premium components that audience buys.

Vinyl is growing, but it is not replacing streaming

Vinyl is more than a nostalgic niche, though its continued growth does not mean it has displaced digital listening. IFPI reported that vinyl revenue grew 4.6% in 2024, marking its 18th consecutive year of growth. In the United States, RIAA reported vinyl sales above US$1 billion in 2025, nearly half of global vinyl sales.

Those figures support a case for vinyl as a durable physical format with commercial weight. They do not show that vinyl alone is bringing high-end audio back, nor do they quantify the premium turntable market. Streaming and records serve different preferences: one makes a vast catalog easy to access; the other offers ownership and a physical way to listen.

Why expensive audio still has a place

Streaming raises the bar for costly hardware. If a listener can play almost any track through a subscription and ordinary connected devices, a premium system has to justify its expense in ways beyond access to music. The likely sources of value are sound quality, dependable operation, useful integration, ownership of physical media, and the listening ritual. That is an editorial judgment about what makes expensive gear worthwhile, not a conclusion established by the industry revenue figures.

The value question is personal. Someone who wants instant discovery, broad access, and easy playback in several rooms may find a streamer is the better fit. Someone who values collecting records and the hands-on process may prefer a turntable. Neither choice needs to make the other obsolete.

Choose the system path that fits how you listen

Consideration Vinyl-led system Streaming-led or hybrid system
Source Records, cartridge, and phono stage Network streamer, DAC, and streaming services
Strength Ritual, collectability, ownership, and physical playback Convenience, breadth, discovery, and multi-room integration
Friction Records cost money and require storage and setup Listening depends on apps, services, networks, and licensing
Typical upgrade focus Cartridge, tonearm, phono stage, and isolation Streamer, DAC, software integration, and room correction

A hybrid system can bridge these preferences rather than force a choice. Pro-Ject’s T2 W is one example: the manufacturer says it can send vinyl over Wi-Fi, offers compressed or 24-bit/48 kHz lossless output to selected streamers, and includes an integrated MM phono preamp. Those are product capabilities, not independent evidence of sound quality or a universal recommendation.

On the digital side, Pro-Ject markets its Stream Box S2 Ultra as a high-end network bridge. The manufacturer lists Roon certification and support for Spotify, TIDAL, and Qobuz. It illustrates how a premium component can connect a system to multiple services rather than compete with streaming itself.

What the death thesis gets wrong—and what remains uncertain

The claim that high-end audio is dying treats the listening experience as if it had to belong to one format. In practice, vinyl’s sustained revenue growth and the development of products that link analog playback with network audio point to a market adapting around different ways to listen.

There is still an important limit to that conclusion: recorded-music revenue and vinyl sales are not measurements of total high-end hardware sales, unit volumes, or manufacturer margins. The available figures cannot settle whether premium component sales are rising or falling. They do show that streaming dominates the economics of music and that physical records remain commercially significant.
