Apple documents macOS installation for compatible Mac computers, and its macOS Tahoe 26 license prohibits installing, using, or running Apple software on a non-Apple-branded computer.
That restriction still applies if you enable virtualization in UEFI, create a virtual machine in VMware or VirtualBox, use Hyper-V, or configure OpenCore. Those tools can change how a PC boots or hosts software, but they do not turn the PC into Apple hardware.
This guide explains what is and is not possible, why common USB and ISO instructions are misleading, and the supported ways to install macOS when you have a compatible Mac.
Can you install macOS on Windows 10 or 11?
Not through an Apple-supported procedure. Apple’s installation documentation covers compatible Mac computers, not generic desktops or laptops running Windows.

Apple’s macOS Tahoe 26 license also states that the software must not be installed, used, or run on a non-Apple-branded computer. The license’s virtualization permission does not create an exception for Windows PCs. It allows additional macOS virtual-machine instances only on an Apple-branded computer that the user owns or controls and that is already running Apple software. Read Apple’s Tahoe license.
| Method often suggested online | Does it make macOS supported on a Windows PC? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Changing BIOS or UEFI settings | No | Firmware settings do not change the computer’s manufacturer or hardware status. |
| Enabling Intel VT-x or AMD virtualization | No | Virtualization support helps a computer run virtual machines; it does not satisfy Apple’s hardware requirement. |
| Hyper-V | No | Hyper-V is a Windows hypervisor, not an Apple-approved macOS installation path. |
| VMware or VirtualBox | No | Apple’s virtualization permission is limited to Apple-branded computers already running Apple software. |
| OpenCore or a “Hackintosh” configuration | No | Bootloader configuration does not make a non-Apple computer Apple-branded or licensed for macOS. |
| A macOS ISO written with Rufus | No | Apple’s documented process uses a full installer application and a compatible Mac. |
macOS Tahoe is version 26, not version 15
Apple identifies macOS Tahoe as version 26. Sequoia remains version 15. As of August 6, 2026, Apple lists the following latest versions. Check Apple’s current macOS version list for later releases.
| macOS release | Latest version listed as of August 6, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Tahoe | 26.6.1 |
| Sequoia | 15.7.9 |
| Sonoma | 14.8.9 |
| Ventura | 13.7.8 |
| Monterey | 12.7.6 |
| Big Sur | 11.7.11 |
| Catalina | 10.15.8 |
| Mojave | 10.14.6 |
| High Sierra | 10.13.6 |
Apple’s Tahoe compatibility list includes specific Mac models, including selected Apple-silicon Macs and a small number of Intel models. The Intel models listed for Tahoe are:
- MacBook Pro 13-inch, 2020, with four Thunderbolt 3 ports
- MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2019
- iMac Retina 5K 27-inch, 2020
- Mac Pro, 2019
A generic Intel Windows laptop or desktop is not included simply because it uses a similar processor. Compatibility is determined by Apple’s supported Mac model list, not only by CPU, RAM, graphics, or storage specifications. See Apple’s Tahoe compatibility list.
The supported ways to install macOS
If you are working with a compatible Mac, Apple documents several installation routes. These are not Windows procedures; they require macOS or macOS Recovery on Apple hardware. For Tahoe 26, Apple directs users to Software Update or Terminal rather than an App Store listing. For older versions, Apple also documents downloads through the App Store or a web browser. Apple’s full installation instructions explain which route applies.
- Software Update: Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, select General, then Software Update. On older macOS releases, the path may be System Preferences followed by Software Update.
- macOS Recovery: Start the compatible Mac in macOS Recovery and use its reinstall option. The exact startup key or button depends on whether the Mac uses Apple silicon or an Intel processor.
- App Store or web browser: Apple documents these routes for many older macOS releases. Open the relevant macOS listing or Apple download page and select Get where offered. If a version is incompatible, the button may be dimmed or Apple may report that it is unavailable.
- Terminal: Download a full installer using Apple’s softwareupdate commands.
- Bootable installer: Create a USB installer on a compatible Mac and use it to install macOS on a supported Mac.
Software Update only displays versions compatible with the Mac being used. If it says the Mac is up to date, Apple says that no newer compatible version is currently available for that Mac.
Downloading a full macOS installer with Terminal

softwareupdate –list-full-installers
To download a particular version, use:
softwareupdate –fetch-full-installer –full-installer-version [number]
For example:
softwareupdate –fetch-full-installer –full-installer-version 26.3
The downloaded installer is placed in the Mac’s /Applications folder. Its name follows this pattern: /Applications/Install macOS [Version Name].app.
These are macOS Terminal commands. They are not commands for Windows Command Prompt or PowerShell, and they do not download an Apple-supported installer for use on a generic Windows PC.
Creating a bootable macOS USB on a Mac
Apple’s bootable-installer process requires a compatible Mac to download the installer and run createinstallmedia. It is not a Windows USB-writing procedure. See Apple’s bootable-installer instructions.
What you need
- A compatible Mac connected to the Internet
- The complete installer application in /Applications
- A USB flash drive connected directly to the Mac
- A backup of anything on the USB drive, because the process erases it
Rename the USB drive MyVolume in Finder or Disk Utility. Apple says a 32 GB flash drive is sufficient for any macOS installer, while 16 GB is sufficient for most earlier versions.
Open Terminal and run the command matching the installer you downloaded:

What the common errors mean
| Error or symptom | Likely cause or Apple’s documented fix |
|---|---|
| “Command not found” | The command is incorrect, the installer is not in /Applications, or the installer name does not match the command. |
| “The installer does not appear to be a valid installer application.” | Delete the installer, use Disk Utility to repair the startup disk, and download the installer again. |
| The command cannot erase the USB volume | Erase the USB volume in Disk Utility as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then run createinstallmedia again. |
| Terminal asks to access files on a removable volume | Click OK when macOS requests access. |
| “Update not found” or the requested version is unavailable | That version is not available for the Mac. Run softwareupdate –list-full-installers to see the versions currently offered. |
| A circle with a line through it appears | The Mac may be incompatible with the macOS version being started. |
| The USB will not boot on a T2 Mac | Open macOS Recovery and use Startup Security Utility to allow booting from external or removable media, if appropriate. |
Why a downloaded DMG or ISO is not enough
A disk image, package, or ISO file is not the same thing as Apple’s standard modern bootable installer application. Apple’s procedure expects an application named Install [Version Name].app in the Mac’s Applications folder.
That distinction matters because createinstallmedia runs from inside the installer application. A Windows utility that writes an ISO to a USB drive is therefore not the equivalent of Apple’s documented process. Even if an unofficial image boots on some hardware, it does not make macOS supported or licensed on a Windows PC.

Claims to ignore in older guides
- “Any PC with compatible hardware can officially run macOS.” Incorrect: Apple’s license limits support to Apple-branded hardware meeting its requirements.
- “VMware, VirtualBox, or Hyper-V makes macOS legal on Windows.” Incorrect: Apple’s virtualization permission is tied to Apple-branded hardware already running Apple software.
- “Tahoe is macOS 15.” Incorrect: Tahoe is macOS 26; Sequoia is macOS 15.
- “Format the installer USB as NTFS or exFAT.” Incorrect for Apple’s process: createinstallmedia erases and formats the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
- “Run createinstallmedia in Windows.” Incorrect: Apple documents it as a macOS Terminal command using /Applications and /Volumes paths.
FAQ
Can I dual-boot macOS and Windows 11 on a normal PC?
Not through an Apple-supported method. A normal Windows PC is non-Apple-branded hardware, and Apple’s macOS license prohibits installing or running macOS on it. Bootloader and partition changes do not alter that restriction.
Can Hyper-V run macOS on Windows 10 or 11?
Hyper-V does not provide an Apple-supported way to run macOS on a Windows PC. Apple’s virtualization permission applies to additional macOS virtual machines on an Apple-branded computer already running Apple software.
Can I create a macOS bootable USB from Windows?
Apple’s documented process requires a compatible Mac, a full installer application in /Applications, and the createinstallmedia command in macOS Terminal. A Windows utility may write an unofficial image, but that is not Apple’s supported installation process.
What is the newest macOS version?
As of August 6, 2026, Apple lists macOS Tahoe 26.6.1 as the latest Tahoe version. Tahoe is version 26; Sequoia is version 15. Check Apple’s version list for newer releases.

Can I install macOS Tahoe on an Intel computer?
Only on the specific Intel Mac models Apple lists as compatible, including the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt 3 ports, the 2020 27-inch iMac, and the 2019 Mac Pro. A generic Intel Windows PC is not included.
Why does Software Update say my Mac is up to date?
Apple says Software Update shows only versions compatible with the Mac being used. “Up to date” means no newer compatible macOS version is currently available for that Mac.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Windows 10 or Windows 11 cannot be converted into an Apple-supported Mac by using an ISO, USB tool, virtual machine, Hyper-V, VMware, VirtualBox, BIOS settings, or OpenCore. To install macOS legitimately and with Apple’s documented support, use compatible Apple hardware. On that Mac, use Software Update, macOS Recovery, the App Store or browser for supported older versions, Terminal, or Apple’s bootable-installer procedure.
