Google’s C++ style guide sets an 80-character line maximum; Google’s Go guide says there is no fixed line limit. That disagreement captures the right way to think about code style: shared conventions help people read a codebase, but no single setting is best for every language, project, editor, or team. The useful question is whether a rule makes structure or intent easier to see—and whether enforcing it is worth the cost.
What makes a style rule worth arguing about?
Style guides are strongest when they help readers orient themselves consistently, not when they present one preference as a universal law. Python Enhancement Proposal 8 (PEP 8) puts it plainly: “A style guide is about consistency.” A convention can reduce friction by making code look familiar across files and contributors, even when another convention would work just as well.
Before debating a setting, ask what problem it solves for this codebase. Consider whether it improves reader clarity, matches nearby code and the language’s established conventions, works with editors and review layouts, preserves important semantics, and avoids unnecessary repository-wide churn. Also distinguish the strength of the argument: an official guide offers a reasoned convention; a local preference reflects team judgment; a controlled study measures a specific task and population. Those are useful kinds of evidence, but they are not interchangeable.
Tabs or spaces—and how wide should indentation be?
For indentation, the practical goal is dependable block structure across editors and collaborators. A shared convention prevents the same code from appearing to have different structure because of how an editor displays tabs.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Python: PEP 8 prefers spaces. It permits tabs to remain consistent with code that is already tab-indented and prohibits mixing tabs and spaces for indentation.
- Google C++: Google’s guide prescribes spaces and two-space indentation.
These are conventions for particular languages or organizations, not proof that one indentation width is universally easier to read. In practice, follow the existing repository and language convention unless there is a concrete reason to change it. A broad conversion can create noisy diffs without making the code clearer.
Is an 80-character line limit useful?
There is no single answer even within Google’s official guides:
| Guide | Rule | Rationale and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Google C++ Style Guide | Lines should be no more than 80 characters, with specified exceptions such as unsplittable URLs or literals. | The guide says the limit is controversial. It cites side-by-side windows and established expectations in existing code as reasons to keep it, while acknowledging that modern screens can show wider lines. |
| Google Go Style Guide | No fixed line-length limit. | If a line feels too long, prefer refactoring; allow a long line when it is already as short as practical. |
Choose based on the way people actually read and review this project. Side-by-side review panes may make shorter lines useful; a wide display may reduce that benefit. Consider whether wrapping is readable, whether splitting a string or URL would make it harder to understand or edit, and whether refactoring produces clearer code rather than merely shorter lines.

Should a line break come before or after an operator?
PEP 8 discusses both historical breaks after binary operators and the mathematical convention of breaking before them. For new Python code, it recommends breaking before operators, while allowing either approach if it is used consistently. Its visual rationale is that keeping an operator with its operand can make the relationship easier to scan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA 2024 eye-tracking experiment by Roberto, Gheyi, da Costa, and Ribeiro involved 32 novice Python developers. For the studied snippet, not following the tested PEP 8 operator line-break recommendation increased eye regression count by 70%. That is a result for one measured condition and participant group—not evidence that every PEP 8 recommendation improves every reader’s performance, or that the same effect applies across languages and experience levels. The study also reported mixed results across recommendations: for one, eye metrics went against the standard even though participants preferred the PEP 8 version.
The practical choice is to use the layout that makes the expression’s structure easiest to follow and apply it consistently. Treat the study as narrow evidence about a particular layout and task, not a universal verdict on formatting.

Which quote marks, braces, and trailing commas matter?
Some punctuation choices have no meaningful correctness difference in ordinary cases. PEP 8 does not prescribe single versus double quotes for ordinary Python strings: “Pick a rule and stick to it.” It recommends using the other quote mark when that avoids backslash escapes and using double quotes for triple-quoted strings to match the docstring convention.
For multiline constructs, PEP 8 examples show acceptable alternatives for closing-delimiter placement and explain how trailing commas can help when lists or argument sets are extended. These choices matter mainly insofar as they make a structure predictable or keep later edits clear. They are rarely worth treating as defects when either form is readable and consistent with the surrounding code.
Do naming conventions and comments improve clarity?
Naming
Names should help readers understand a value or operation in context. PEP 8 recommends lowercase words separated by underscores for Python functions and variables, while saying that consistency with an existing library can take precedence. Google’s Go guide calls naming “more art than science” and encourages context-sensitive names that avoid needless repetition. The useful standard is clarity within the codebase, not forcing one naming pattern onto every language.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Convention feedback is common in reviews, but its prevalence does not make every naming preference equally important. The paper “Learning Natural Coding Conventions” reported that one third of code reviews in its sample contained convention feedback, and that naming suggestions appeared in almost one quarter of reviewed code changes. Those figures describe that paper’s dataset, not code reviews generally.
Comments
Comments earn their space when they explain why code behaves a certain way or clarify non-obvious intent. They add little when they merely restate the code, and can become a liability when they obscure, contradict, or outlive what they describe. PEP 8 warns that comments contradicting the code are worse than no comments; Google’s Go guidance similarly cautions against unnecessary commentary. Prefer a clear explanation of rationale over a running narration of visible operations.

- Automate routine formatting. Let a formatter or other agreed tooling settle mechanical choices so code review can focus on the change’s meaning.
- Follow existing conventions by default. Start with the language guide and the project’s established style rather than making every file a fresh debate.
- Explain the reason for a rule. A useful convention helps reviewers understand what it protects, such as dependable structure or readable review panes.
- Allow justified exceptions. A mechanically short line may be harder to read if breaking it harms a string, URL, or expression; a long line may be the clearest practical form.
- Spend review attention on clarity and defects. Challenge a style choice when it obscures intent or creates a real problem, not simply because another acceptable form exists.
In “Learning Natural Coding Conventions,” the Naturalize authors reported 94% top-suggestion accuracy and 14 accepted patches out of 18 generated across five projects. These are tool-evaluation results, not evidence that style rules improve software quality or that every convention should be enforced automatically.
How should a team settle a style disagreement?
- Identify the reader problem. Name the specific issue—such as hidden block structure, a hard-to-scan expression, or awkward review wrapping—rather than arguing from taste alone.
- Check the project and language convention. Prefer the established rule where it already supports readable, consistent code.
- Choose a default and record its purpose. Agreement is useful when contributors can apply the rule predictably and understand why it exists.
- Automate what does not require judgment. Use the team’s formatting tools for routine enforcement, leaving human review for intent, clarity, and meaningful exceptions.
- Reopen the rule only with concrete evidence. A demonstrated readability or correctness problem is a better reason to revisit a settled choice than another round of abstract preference.
Consistency and reader clarity are defensible goals; the available guides and studies do not establish universal effects on expert productivity, long-term maintenance costs, or defect rates. The most useful rules are therefore the ones a team can explain, apply consistently, and revise when they demonstrably stop helping readers.
