IBM announced the System/360 on April 7, 1964, introducing a family of computers designed to share an architecture rather than force customers to choose among separate, incompatible product lines. Its central promise was that an organization could start with a smaller system and expand while retaining software—a change in how businesses could plan for computing growth.
What was the IBM System/360?
System/360 was a family of computers built around a common architecture. IBM said the family replaced five existing computer product lines, which had been designed for different purposes and were difficult for the company to maintain as separate offerings. Customers, meanwhile, could face the expense of changing systems when they needed more memory or a different application.
The new approach aimed to let organizations select a machine suited to their needs and move to a more capable model as those needs grew. IBM presented the family for business, scientific, and government work. Its name referred to addressing all types of users, according to the company.
Why was System/360 important?
Before the family approach, buying a different computer could mean moving to a different product line, with the accompanying risk and cost of replacing or adapting software. System/360’s shared architecture was intended to make growth less disruptive: a customer could upgrade within the family without rewriting software from scratch.

That was a design goal, not a guarantee that every program would run unchanged on every model or configuration. The significance was the attempt to make a broad range of machines and workloads part of one compatible family, giving customers more room to scale while preserving software investments.
How large was IBM’s commitment?
IBM’s historical overview reports that development involved a USD 5 billion investment over four years. The company says a task force called SPREAD was formed in 1961 to plan the next generation of computers. Gene Amdahl was chief architect; Fred Brooks led the project in collaboration with Bob Evans and Erich Bloch.

IBM chairman Thomas J. Watson Jr. described the announcement as a break with earlier thinking: “System/360 represents a sharp departure from concepts of the past in designing and building computers.” The quotation is reproduced in IBM’s retrospective of the April 7, 1964 press conference.
What did IBM announce with the family?
IBM’s historical overview says the launch included six processor models spanning a fiftyfold performance range, along with 54 peripheral devices. It also identifies an 8-bit byte architecture. These are figures from IBM’s own account, not independently audited measurements.

IBM’s retrospective presents launch configurations differently, describing 19 combinations of speed and memory and more than 40 peripheral types. Those counts reflect different ways of characterizing the announcement and should not be combined into one exact total.

IBM reports that the company received more than 1,000 purchases in the first month. Its historical overview also says products based on System/360 architecture and extensions accounted for more than half of IBM’s revenue in 1989. These figures illustrate the scale and longevity IBM attributes to the platform; the available company history does not establish an independently audited measure of the project’s total economic return.

At the launch, Watson Jr. described the broader ambition as “the beginning of a new generation — not only of computers — but of their application in business, science, and government.” System/360’s lasting idea was that computing could be offered as a scalable family rather than a collection of machines tied to separate purposes.
