For the best racing-game setup on Xbox Series X, choose a resolution and refresh rate your display supports, calibrate HDR on both the TV and console, and enable VRR or ALLM only when the display supports them. These console settings configure the signal sent to the screen; they do not set a racing game’s graphics mode or guarantee its frame rate.

1. Check what your TV or monitor supports

Start on the console at Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details. This screen reports the display’s detected 4K and HDR capabilities. The combinations you can select depend on the display and its connection: a screen may support 120 Hz only at certain resolutions, or only through specific HDMI inputs.

Check the display manual for the capabilities of the exact HDMI port you plan to use. A 4K or 120 Hz label on a TV does not, by itself, establish that every resolution, refresh rate, HDR format, VRR, and ALLM feature works together on every input.

2. Choose the Xbox output resolution and refresh rate

In Settings > General > TV & Display Options, select the highest resolution and refresh rate that your display supports and that you prefer. Xbox Series X supports output up to 120 Hz, but that is a console capability—not a promise that every racing game renders at 120 frames per second.

Output settings and a game’s graphics settings are separate. If a racing game offers quality and performance modes, make that choice in the game’s own settings. Compare the title’s stated resolution, target or locked frame rate, visual detail, and compatibility with your preferred display output. Those details vary by game and should be checked in that game’s current official documentation; the Xbox output menu cannot tell you which mode a particular title uses.

3. Connect through the right HDMI port

Use an HDMI input on the TV or monitor that supports the features you selected. Some displays reserve advanced capabilities for particular ports, and an HDMI receiver, switch, or capture device between the console and display can complicate troubleshooting.

Xbox says an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is included with Series X. Use the included cable if it suits your setup; a replacement is only relevant if you cannot use it or have isolated the cable as the source of a connection problem.

4. Set up HDR on the display and Xbox

HDR requires compatible hardware and the correct display input settings. Confirm that both the display and the HDMI port connected to the Xbox support HDR10, then enable the display’s HDR mode or equivalent input option as directed by its manufacturer.

  1. On Xbox, open Settings > General > TV & Display Options > Setup > Calibrate HDR for Games.
  2. Follow the on-screen calibration instructions using the display’s own picture or HDR settings as needed.
  3. If the HDR image looks wrong or the calibration screens do not appear as expected, check the display manual and confirm that HDR is enabled for the HDMI input in use.

There is no single numeric HDR calibration value that is right for every screen. Use the Xbox calibration tool and the instructions for your display rather than copying values intended for another model.

5. Enable VRR and ALLM when supported

Xbox Series X supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), but the connected display must support the feature as well. If your display supports them, enable the corresponding options in the Xbox display settings and verify that any required setting is also enabled on the display.

  • ALLM allows a compatible display to switch automatically to a low-latency mode. The display’s own naming and behavior can vary by manufacturer.

If VRR causes visible corruption, Xbox troubleshooting guidance recommends turning VRR off. Treat that as a symptom-specific troubleshooting step, not a universal racing-game recommendation.

  1. In Settings > General > TV & Display Options, check that display detection is set to Auto-detect.
  2. Confirm the selected HDMI input is the one connected to the Xbox and that it supports the feature you want. Review the display manual for any required input or enhanced-format setting.
  3. Check for display firmware updates and confirm that the display’s own VRR, HDR, or low-latency settings are enabled when required.
  4. Connect the Xbox directly to the TV or monitor, bypassing an HDMI receiver, switch, or other device, to determine whether an intermediary is limiting the signal.
  5. If visual corruption occurs with VRR, turn VRR off and retest. Xbox troubleshooting also suggests trying a 60 Hz refresh rate in a specific troubleshooting scenario; this is not a general recommendation for every racing game or display.

Menu labels and display firmware can change. If your screen’s options differ from these paths, follow the labels shown on your console and consult the display manufacturer’s instructions.
