The most effective way to eliminate pet odors is to remove their source: clean urine or feces from the affected material, wash soiled fabrics, and investigate persistent smells coming from the animal. Enzymatic cleaners designed for the mess and surface are a well-supported option for urine and feces. Air fresheners and air cleaners can help only in limited, supplementary ways; they do not replace cleaning or veterinary care.
How do I get rid of pet odors?
- Find the source: check for accidents, soiled bedding, litter areas, and recurring spots. For hard-to-find urine, VCA notes that a black light or moisture detector may help locate contamination in its house-soiling guidance.
- Remove as much urine or solid waste as you can without spreading it. Treat the material according to its surface and whether the mess is fresh or set in.
- For urine or feces, use an enzyme-containing cleaner labeled for that kind of mess and the affected material. Enzymes can degrade these deposits, according to VCA; follow the product directions rather than assuming one application will work on every stain or depth of contamination.
- Keep pets away from wet treated areas until they are dry. Ventilate as directed on the label, and do not mix cleaning products.
- If the odor returns, look for residue or a deeper source rather than masking it with fragrance. Persistent house-soiling or a sudden change in the animal’s smell may need veterinary assessment.
How should I clean urine or feces from carpet and upholstery?
Fresh carpet accidents
For a fresh carpet accident, remove solids and blot up liquid, then rinse the affected area with clean, cool water and blot again. The Humane Society’s stain and odor guidance advises against using a steam cleaner for urine odors in carpet. Heat can make odor removal more difficult, so use a carpet-cleaning method appropriate to the material instead.
After blotting, apply an enzymatic pet urine odor cleaner that is labeled for carpet and the type of mess. Follow its directions, including any instructions about how much product to use and how long to leave it. Larger or deeply affected areas may need enough cleaner to reach the contaminated material; a small surface application may not reach residue below it.
Set-in stains and upholstery
For set-in carpet stains, the Humane Society suggests considering a carpet cleaner. Check that both the machine and its formula are compatible with your carpet, follow their instructions, and let the area dry fully before pets return. The available guidance does not establish that one machine or formula removes more odor than another.

For upholstery, first confirm the fabric can tolerate the chosen cleaner. Test in an inconspicuous area if the product label calls for it, and avoid soaking material that cannot be safely wetted. Use a cleaner labeled for the upholstery and mess; treatment requirements vary by fabric and by how deeply the accident penetrated.
Recurring cat urine spots
Use an enzymatic cleanser designed to neutralize pet odors, as the ASPCA’s cat urine-marking guidance recommends. Do not use ammonia as an odor remedy: urine contains ammonia, and its smell can attract a cat back to the same location. If marking continues, cleaning alone may not address the cause; discuss persistent or new house-soiling with a veterinarian.

What works for washable bedding and fabrics?
For washable items, the Humane Society suggests adding a one-pound box of baking soda to the usual detergent and washing as usual; air-dry if possible. If the item still looks or smells soiled, its guidance recommends washing again with an enzymatic cleaner. Check the fabric care instructions and the cleaner label before using it in a wash.
During house training, a washable vinyl, flannel-backed tablecloth can serve as a temporary cover for a pet’s bed, according to the Humane Society. It is a protective layer, not a substitute for cleaning accidents or addressing repeated soiling.

What if the odor is coming from the pet?
Check the animal rather than trying to cover a persistent body odor with perfume or room fragrance. The ASPCA’s dog grooming advice identifies ears and teeth as possible odor sources and notes that routine bathing may be enough in some cases. If grooming does not resolve a persistent smell, consult a veterinarian to check for an underlying cause or infection.
Bad breath can be associated with bacteria in plaque, tartar, or retained food particles. VCA explains that assessment and treatment may require a veterinary dental examination and cleaning in its guide to pet breath. Home cleaning or a scented product should not stand in for that evaluation when the odor persists.

Can an air purifier remove pet odors?
An air cleaner can supplement source removal, but an ordinary particle filter does not remove gaseous pollutants. The U.S. EPA distinguishes particle filtration from gas removal in its Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home and air-cleaner health-risk guidance. For odors in the air, look for activated carbon or another medium specifically intended for gases, and check the product’s own labeling. Performance depends on the product and timely filter replacement; no air cleaner should be assumed to eliminate all pet odors.
Ventilate the room when appropriate and clean the source first. Filtering air will not remove urine or feces trapped in carpet, upholstery, or bedding.

Cleaning safety and when to get help
- Follow the cleaner’s label, including instructions for dilution, rinsing, ventilation, and color testing. Never mix cleaning products or improvise with concentrated agents.
- Keep pets off treated surfaces until cleaners and carpet shampoo have dried. The ASPCA’s household-product safety guidance says most enzyme-based cleaners may cause mild stomach upset if ingested.
- Use special caution around birds: ASPCA warns that birds are particularly sensitive to fumes. Seek veterinary advice before using cleaners around them.
- Consult a veterinarian if an animal’s smell persists despite routine grooming, or if house-soiling is persistent or changes suddenly. A cleaning product cannot treat an underlying medical or behavioral cause.
