The most useful travel tech depends on what makes a journey uncomfortable: cabin noise, a dwindling phone battery, difficulty resting in a seat, or a medical-accessibility need. Headphones, power banks and travel pillows can help, but they are optional tools—not universal fixes. Choose for fit and practical constraints, and check current airline rules before you fly.
For cabin noise: choose headphones or earbuds for fit and awareness
Noise-cancelling headphones or earbuds can be one way to manage cabin sound. The right choice depends on what you will comfortably wear for hours and how easily you need to hear people around you, including crew announcements.
Compare the trade-offs
- Over-ear headphones: Consider whether the headband and ear cups remain comfortable during long wear, and whether their size is acceptable in your carry-on.
- In-ear earbuds: They are typically smaller to pack, but comfort depends on how the tips fit your ears over time.
- Noise-management modes: Check how a product handles outside sound and whether you can switch modes or remove an earbud when you need more awareness.
- Battery life: Compare the maker’s stated battery life with the length of your journey, and plan for charging if needed. Treat manufacturer figures as product claims, not independent test results.
Bose describes its QuietComfort range for air travel and publishes product information on fit and battery life. Those are manufacturer descriptions; they do not establish that a particular model is the best choice or will suit every traveler. Compare current models and specifications directly at Bose’s headphones page.
For keeping devices charged: pack a power bank within airline limits
A portable charger can keep a phone or other device powered when an outlet is unavailable, but its marked watt-hour (Wh) rating matters more for flying than its size alone. The Federal Aviation Administration’s passenger guidance, updated August 10, 2026, says: “Spare lithium batteries (including power banks and portable chargers) must be carried on and cannot be checked.”

Check the battery rating and where it goes
| Battery rating | FAA passenger guidance | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 0–100 Wh | Allowed | Carry the power bank in your carry-on baggage, not checked baggage. |
| 101–160 Wh | Requires carrier approval | Ask the airline for approval before traveling; carry it on if permitted. |
| Over 160 Wh | Forbidden | Do not bring it on the passenger flight. |
These thresholds come from the FAA’s passenger battery guidance; airlines may impose stricter limits. Check the Wh rating printed on the battery and verify your carrier’s current policy, especially for a power bank in the approval range.
Make sure it works with your devices
Before choosing a charger, check that its ports and charging standards match the devices you intend to power. FAA battery guidance establishes air-travel handling limits, not which charger will charge a particular phone fastest or how many charges it will provide; use the charger and device makers’ specifications for compatibility and capacity.

For using electronics in flight: follow airplane-mode and Wi-Fi rules
FAA guidance says cell phones and portable electronic devices must be used in airplane mode or with their cellular connection disabled. In-flight Wi-Fi is available only when the aircraft has the necessary equipment and the airline permits its use. Follow crew instructions and your airline’s rules for the specific flight. See the FAA’s guidance for passengers using electronic devices.
For resting in your seat: treat a travel pillow as a personal-fit choice
A travel pillow is an optional physical comfort accessory, not a technology fix with a guaranteed result. Support styles differ, and a design that feels supportive to one person may not fit another. Compare how it supports your preferred seated position, how much room it takes when packed, and whether its cover can be cleaned.

For long journeys: move your legs regularly
For long trips, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends moving your legs frequently and exercising your calf muscles. Travelers with risk factors for blood clots should ask a clinician about prevention tailored to them. Graduated compression stockings may help some people; they are not a blanket recommendation for every traveler. Read the CDC’s travel guidance on blood clots and discuss personal concerns with a clinician.

For oxygen needs: plan portable oxygen concentrator use with the airline
A portable oxygen concentrator (POC) is medical equipment for travelers who need supplemental oxygen, not a general-purpose travel gadget. Department of Transportation guidance says airlines may require 48 hours’ advance notice, a physician’s statement, and enough batteries to power the device for at least 150% of the flight duration. Requirements can depend on the airline and the device.
Contact your airline well before departure to confirm that your particular POC is accepted and what documentation it requires. Ask your clinician about your travel needs, and check the device maker’s operating and battery instructions. The DOT explains passenger rights and airline requirements for air travelers with disabilities.

How to choose what to bring
- If cabin sound is your main concern: Compare headphones or earbuds by long-wear fit, noise-management controls, battery life, portability and how readily you can hear announcements.
- If you need power: Check the charger’s device compatibility and marked Wh rating, then confirm the airline’s battery policy.
- If seated rest is difficult: Consider whether a pillow’s support style, packed size and cleaning requirements suit you; do not assume a product will fit everyone.
- If you use a POC: Start with the airline, clinician and device maker rather than treating it like an ordinary electronics purchase.
- If you have clot-risk concerns on a long trip: Ask a clinician what prevention is appropriate for you.
Travel rules and product specifications can change. Recheck the FAA and airline battery and electronics rules, and confirm medical-device requirements with your carrier before departure.
