Sports streaming is less about the biggest channel number than whether a service carries your teams, local station, regional sports network, and the league package you actually need. A service can list ESPN or FOX Sports and still miss a game because of a ZIP-code restriction, blackout, or separate subscription requirement.

We compared the major live-TV services using current plan information verified August 8, 2026. YouTube TV is the best overall choice for most sports households, Fubo is the strongest sports-first option in markets where its regional coverage works, and Sling is the best lower-cost option if you are willing to check local channels carefully. DIRECTV remains compelling for regional sports and a broad traditional-TV lineup, while Hulu + Live TV is the most convenient choice for households that also want Disney+ and ESPN access.

Our sports streaming picks for 2026

Service Starting price Why it is good for sports What to check first
YouTube TV $82.99/month Strong national lineup, unlimited DVR, three streams, Multiview Local channels, regional sports networks, league-specific add-ons
Fubo Varies by plan and location Sports-focused interface and strong game discovery ZIP-code lineup, taxes, regional restrictions, nine-month DVR expiry
Sling TV $45.99/month for Orange or Blue Lower entry price and useful sports add-ons Orange/Blue channel split, local coverage, stream limits
DIRECTV $69.98/month for advertised Entertainment package including Gemini lease Broad traditional lineup and regional sports availability Promotional pricing, Gemini fee, regional sports fee, taxes
Hulu + Live TV $89.99/month Live sports plus Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN access ESPN content is accessed through its own app; locals vary by ZIP
Philo $25/month Cheap entertainment companion service No ESPN, local broadcast networks, or major national sports networks

Best overall: YouTube TV

YouTube TV is the easiest recommendation when a household watches several sports and wants one straightforward live-TV service. The standard plan costs $82.99 per month, includes more than 100 channels, unlimited DVR capacity, six household accounts, and three simultaneous streams.

Its advantage is balance. You get the major broadcast networks in participating markets, common national sports channels, a relatively clean guide, and one of the better ways to watch multiple events at once. Supported TVs and streaming devices can display up to four eligible events in Multiview. To open it during supported programming, press down while watching, select Multiview, and choose a preset or available custom combination.

  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

There are important Multiview boundaries. Custom Multiview is not available in a web browser or through AirPlay, not every live program qualifies, and older streaming devices may provide fewer choices or lower picture quality. NFL RedZone appears in Multiview only when the account has both NFL Sunday Ticket and NFL RedZone.

Why its DVR is useful for sports

YouTube TV has no storage-capacity limit, but “unlimited DVR” does not mean permanent archives. Recordings expire individually. Add a team, league, or program to the library to capture current and future airings. For NFL RedZone, search specifically for NFL Red Zone and add that result; adding a team or league does not record the full eight-hour RedZone block.

Use Live → Sort → Edit → Live guide settings to create a more useful sports guide. On the web or mobile apps, the path is Profile photo → Settings → Live guide.

Where YouTube TV falls short

The normal limit is three simultaneous streams, not unlimited viewing. Unlimited in-home streaming requires the 4K Plus add-on and a properly configured home network. Also, YouTube TV uses both a home area and a current playback location. While traveling within the United States, local channels generally change to those available where you are. You cannot use the service internationally, and VPNs or proxies can trigger playback failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before subscribing, enter your ZIP code and verify the exact local affiliates and regional sports channels. If you move, use Profile photo → Location → Update next to Home area; do not assume changing the playback location changes the account’s home area.

Best for dedicated sports fans: Fubo

Fubo remains the most sports-oriented service in this group. Its website puts sports discovery near the center of the experience: choose Sports from the top menu, then filter by sport, league, and date to find games available in your area.

That workflow is useful when you are not sure which network has a particular match. Fubo’s plan lineup includes sports-heavy packages such as Pro and Elite, along with Latino-focused options, but the exact price and channel list are location-dependent. Taxes and regional restrictions may also apply. Fubo reduced the price of selected subscriptions for billing cycles beginning on or after January 1, 2026, so older reviews may show obsolete figures.

Fubo is a particularly good candidate for viewers who care about a regional sports network or watch many games across different leagues. It is not a safe blind purchase, however. Enter your ZIP code and confirm the actual RSN, local stations, and networks for the games you watch.

Its cloud DVR recordings expire after nine months. That is generous enough for a season, but it is not a permanent sports library. A network can also be present in the lineup while a particular game remains unavailable because of regional rights or blackout rules.

Best budget sports option: Sling TV

Sling TV costs less than the full-service options, but its channel structure requires more homework. Sling Orange and Sling Blue are each currently listed at $45.99 per month; the combined package and sports extras change the total cost.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

Orange and Blue are not interchangeable:

  • Sling Orange is built around channels such as ESPN and permits one simultaneous stream.
  • Sling Blue carries a different selection, supports up to three simultaneous streams, and includes some local channels in qualifying markets.
  • Orange & Blue supports up to four streams overall, but only one Orange-exclusive channel can be watched at a time.

Sling Orange does not include local channels. Blue and Orange & Blue include some local stations only in eligible markets. That makes Sling attractive for fans who mainly need national sports channels and can use an antenna for broadcast games, but less attractive if you want every ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC game in one app.

Every paid plan includes 50 hours of cloud DVR. Unlimited DVR costs an additional $5 per month. Sling says Local Now, AAC Network Extra, SEC Network+, Pluto, and local channels received through an antenna cannot be recorded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sling currently promotes Freestream and short-term 1-, 3-, and 7-day passes rather than a general free trial for its standard monthly service. A pass ends automatically, while monthly subscribers cancel through their account and retain access until the paid period ends.

Best for regional sports and a traditional lineup: DIRECTV

DIRECTV is worth considering when regional sports and a familiar cable-style lineup matter more than finding the absolute lowest price. Its current Signature packages list:

Package Advertised channels Listed monthly price including Gemini lease
Entertainment 90+ $69.98
Choice 125+ $89.98, with a regional sports fee of up to $19.99 where applicable
Ultimate 160+ $99.98, subject to regional sports fee conditions
Premier 185+ $159.98, subject to regional sports fee conditions

These are not simple all-in prices. DIRECTV’s displayed offers can include first-month or months 2–24 promotions, a Gemini device lease, regional sports fees, and taxes. Treat the checkout total—not the headline promotion—as the price to compare.

DIRECTV offers satellite plus device, streaming app plus device, and streaming app-only options. The internet-only option does not require a satellite dish. The Gemini device requires high-speed internet and a Google login, and it can show third-party streaming apps, but those apps still require their own subscriptions and sign-ins.

DVR or cloud DVR options are included at no extra charge according to the package information. Local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, and CW stations are available where offered. The main reason to choose DIRECTV is its broader traditional package structure and regional coverage—not necessarily its billing simplicity.

Best sports-and-entertainment bundle: Hulu + Live TV

Hulu + Live TV costs $89.99 per month for the ad-supported version and includes Hulu’s on-demand library, Disney+ with ads, and ESPN access. Hulu Premium + Live TV is listed at $99.99 per month and includes Disney+ Premium.

This is a good fit for a household that wants sports but would also pay for Hulu and Disney+ separately. ESPN viewing may take place in the separate ESPN app, and the included access is subject to the package and content rights. It is not the same thing as receiving an unrestricted standalone ESPN subscription.

Hulu includes unlimited DVR at no additional charge, with live-TV recordings stored for up to nine months. Recordings can be fast-forwarded, but that does not make all Hulu on-demand programming ad-free. Premium removes ads from eligible on-demand content; live channels still contain commercial breaks.

Hulu advertises more than 100 live channels and lists sports networks including ESPN, NFL Network, MLB Network, SEC Network, and Big Ten Network. Local availability, blackouts, and sports rights still depend on location. Check the lineup by ZIP code before relying on Hulu for a local team.

Services that are not good primary sports packages

Philo

Philo Essential costs $25 per month and includes 70+ paid entertainment channels, more than 100 ad-supported free channels, and one-year DVR retention. It is inexpensive, but it does not include local broadcast networks, ESPN, or major national sports networks. Use it as an entertainment companion, not as a replacement for a sports package.

Frndly TV

Frndly TV starts at $8.99 per month with 50+ channels, but the lineup is focused on family, lifestyle, and classic entertainment programming. Basic has no DVR. DVR begins with Classic at $10.99 per month, while Premium costs $12.99 and retains recordings for up to nine months. Neither plan is designed for major league sports.

How to choose without paying for the wrong service

  1. List the actual events. Write down the teams, leagues, and channels you need. “Sports” is too broad; “Sunday NFL games on CBS and FOX, ESPN Monday Night Football, and my local MLB RSN” is testable.
  2. Check your ZIP code on every serious candidate. Record the names of the local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, and CW affiliates shown during signup. Do the same for regional sports networks.
  3. Test the event, not just the channel logo. Search for a specific upcoming game. A service may carry the network but lack the local or regional rights for that event.
  4. Add the real extras. Include sports add-ons, NFL RedZone, league packages, DVR upgrades, device leases, regional sports fees, taxes, and any required premium app.
  5. Check simultaneous streams. Three streams on YouTube TV, one on Sling Orange, and up to four on Orange & Blue are materially different in a busy household.
  6. Read the recording expiry rule. YouTube TV, Hulu, and Fubo do not keep recordings forever despite unlimited-capacity claims. Philo retains paid recordings for one year; Frndly TV retains them for three or nine months depending on plan.
  7. Check travel and blackout rules. A home-area service may show different local stations while traveling, and a VPN can cause location verification or playback errors.

Our final ranking

  1. YouTube TV: best overall combination of national sports, local-channel access, DVR, and Multiview.
  2. Fubo: best for sports-first households, provided its ZIP-code lineup has the needed RSNs and locals.
  3. DIRECTV: best traditional package alternative when regional sports coverage justifies the higher and more complicated bill.
  4. Hulu + Live TV: best bundle for households that already value Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN access.
  5. Sling TV: best lower-cost choice for fans who understand the Orange/Blue split and can solve local-channel coverage separately.

FAQ

Which live TV service is best for sports in 2026?

YouTube TV is the best overall pick for most households because it combines a broad national lineup, local channels where available, unlimited-capacity DVR, three streams, and Multiview. Fubo may be better if its ZIP-code-specific lineup carries the regional sports networks and events you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does unlimited DVR mean sports recordings never expire?

No. YouTube TV has unlimited DVR capacity but recordings expire. Hulu and Fubo retain recordings for up to nine months, Philo paid recordings last one year, and Frndly TV retains recordings for three or nine months depending on the plan.

Is Sling TV good for sports?

Sling can be good value for national sports channels, especially when the Orange or Blue plan matches your needs. Orange allows one stream and has no local channels; Blue has different channels and up to three streams. Check local stations and add-on costs before subscribing.

Can a streaming service guarantee that I can watch my local team?

No. Local affiliates, regional sports networks, blackouts, and league rights vary by ZIP code and event. Verify the specific upcoming game on the service rather than relying only on its national channel list.

The Bottom Line

Choose YouTube TV if you want the safest all-around sports package. Choose Fubo after confirming its regional lineup if sports are the main reason you subscribe. Sling can reduce the bill, but only if its Orange/Blue channel split and local coverage work for you. Whatever you pick, compare the ZIP-code lineup, specific game availability, stream limit, add-ons, and post-promotion price before entering payment details.
