Which password manager should you choose?
Choose 1Password for a paid, integrated experience
1Password is the clearest match if you want a paid manager with family options, secure sharing, passkey support and features such as Travel Mode and Watchtower. Both The Independent and Engadget selected it as their overall pick in 2025. Engadget reported article-era prices of $3 per month for an individual subscription and $5 per month for a family plan; these are historical figures, not current quotations. See Engadget’s comparison.
Choose Bitwarden to start with a free plan
Bitwarden is a strong option if avoiding a subscription is the priority. The Independent and Engadget both recommend it as a leading free choice and note its open-source code and broad platform access. Engadget listed Premium at $10 per year and the family plan at $40 per year in its 2025 article; verify current prices and which features require payment before choosing a plan. Consider Proton Pass for a security-focused feature set
The Independent named Proton Pass its security pick. Proton says its apps are open source, have undergone third-party audits, encrypt vaults using AES-GCM, support passkeys and include Pass Monitor. Those claims describe Proton’s own product and security disclosures; an audit’s scope and date matter, and none of these points establishes that a service is invulnerable. Proton’s security information.
Consider Google Password Manager if you mainly use Chrome
The Independent’s recommendation is specifically for Chrome users. A built-in manager may be convenient, but it can tie your workflow more closely to one device or browser ecosystem. If you regularly switch among operating systems or browsers, check that your chosen manager supports all of them before migrating credentials. The Independent’s recommendations.

- Device and browser coverage: Confirm support for your computer and phone operating systems, plus the browsers where you sign in. The Independent lists desktop, mobile and browser support for its selections; Engadget tested managers on iPhone, Android, Safari, Chrome and Firefox.
- Free-plan boundaries: Check password and device limits, and whether features you need—such as secure sharing, attachments or security reports—are paid. A service described as free in a 2025 review may have changed its terms since then.
- Family and sharing needs: If household members share access, find out how shared vaults work, who can manage them, and what happens if a member leaves or loses account access.
- Passkey behavior: Check whether the manager can create, store and sync passkeys across the devices you use. Passkeys rely on public-key cryptography and can reduce phishing risk, but only for sites and services that support them.
- Recovery and two-factor authentication: Understand how you regain access if you lose a device or forget the account credentials. Check available two-factor methods and whether your account supports a FIDO2 security key.
- Alerts and monitoring: Determine whether weak-password, breach or phishing alerts are included in your plan and what action they recommend. An alert is useful only if you can identify the affected account and change its credentials.
- Open-source code and audit disclosures: Look for the scope and date of published assessments, not just the word “audited.” Open-source availability can support outside inspection, but does not by itself prove that a product is secure.
- Import and autofill: Review the provider’s migration instructions and test importing a small set of entries first. Check how autofill behaves on your browsers and phone; WIRED advises against automatic form filling as an additional precaution.
What a password manager can—and cannot—protect
A password manager makes it easier to use a different, strong password for each account and to keep those credentials available across your devices. That reduces the temptation to reuse passwords, but it does not secure every part of an account’s lifecycle.
A breach at a website still needs a response
A manager cannot prevent a breach at a site that holds your account information. Breach monitoring may help you identify an affected credential; change that password on the affected service, and update any other accounts where you reused it. Do not treat an alert as proof that other account protections are unnecessary. WIRED’s password-manager guidance.

Passkeys are useful when the service supports them
Passkeys replace a conventional password login with a cryptographic credential. They can resist phishing, but support is not universal, and the experience depends on the service and devices involved. Check that the sites you rely on support passkeys and that your manager can handle the creation and synchronization workflow you need. Proton’s passkey and security information.
Read security claims with their scope in mind
Proton describes its encryption, open-source clients and audits on its security page. 1Password says, “1Password products have been reviewed by multiple independent security firms.” Both statements should be read as company disclosures: review dates, product scope and assessment details matter, and an audit is not a guarantee against future vulnerabilities. Proton; 1Password.

How to switch without disrupting account access
- Inventory your devices and browsers. List the places where you sign in most often, and check that the new manager supports them before exporting or importing a vault.
- Compare current plan details. On the provider’s official plan page, confirm price, password or device limits, family access, sharing, passkey support and recovery options. The 2025 comparison prices above are historical, not a substitute for current localized pricing.
- Read the migration and recovery instructions. Confirm how the service imports your existing vault and what recovery options you will have if you lose access. Keep your existing manager available until the new vault is verified.
- Import and verify a small sample. Check that entries, notes and any other data you rely on arrived correctly, then test sign-in and autofill on your main devices before retiring the old vault.
- Secure the new account. Set up the available two-factor protection and recovery method, then replace weak or reused passwords as you encounter them. Turn on alerts you understand and can act on.
The Independent says its review team rated products for “how secure it feels, how easy it is to use day-to-day, and how well it works across different devices and browsers.” That is a useful decision lens: prioritize the service you will use consistently across your own setup, rather than a feature list detached from your needs. The Independent’s review methodology.
