The best MacBook accessories are the ones that solve a real problem: a USB-C hub or dock for connections you lack, a suitable charger for travel or replacement, and a sleeve or bag that fits your exact MacBook. Desk accessories such as stands, displays, keyboards, mice, and external drives are useful when they match your workflow—not mandatory upgrades.
Start with your MacBook’s model and the problem you want to solve
MacBook ports, display support, and charging requirements differ by model and generation. Check About This Mac for your model, then compare its technical specifications with the accessory’s requirements before buying.
For context, Apple’s current MacBook Air specifications list two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, MagSafe 3, and a headphone jack. The USB-C ports support charging, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 4, and USB 4; that configuration is an example, not a description of every MacBook. See Apple’s MacBook Air specifications.
Which MacBook accessories are worth buying?
USB-C hub or multiport adapter: for ports you actually need
If your MacBook lacks a connection you use—such as USB-A, HDMI, SD, or Ethernet—a hub or multiport adapter can add it. Apple’s Mac accessory catalog includes USB-C multiport adapters and SD-card readers. Browse Apple’s Mac accessories.

- High-Speed, High-Def: A multi-function USB-C port supports huge charging power up to 100W, data transfer up to an astounding 40 Gb/s, and media display at resolutions up to 5K.
- Multi-Monitor Display: The HDMI port supports a resolution of 4K@60Hz while the multi-function port supports 5K@60Hz. Connect to both simultaneously to enjoy crystal-clear streaming or mirroring across 2 displays. Note: M1, M2 and M3 MacBooks do not support dual external display.
- Designed for the Latest MacBooks: Works with the latest MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and is designed specially to avoid obstructing your MacBook's MagSafe port. Note: this hub is not compatible with MacBook Neo.
- What You Get: Anker 547 USB-C Hub (7-in-2, for MacBook), welcome guide, worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Before choosing one, verify the connection type and data speed, the ports you need, display resolution and refresh-rate support, and power pass-through. If you plan to connect a monitor, check that your Mac supports the display arrangement you want; a matching plug alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Thunderbolt dock: for a more connected desk
A Thunderbolt dock may suit a desk where you regularly connect several peripherals or displays. Apple lists Thunderbolt docks in its Mac accessory catalog, but compatibility and display capabilities depend on the particular dock and Mac. Compare the dock’s specifications with your Mac’s display support and the peripherals you plan to attach before buying. See Apple’s Mac accessory catalog.

USB-C charger and cable: for travel or replacement
A second charger is useful if you want one to leave at work or pack in a travel bag, or if you need to replace your current adapter. It is not automatically an upgrade. Apple Support says: “If your Mac uses USB-C to charge, you can charge your Mac laptop with any USB-C power adapter or display that supports USB Power Delivery (USB PD).” Read Apple’s guidance on using a power adapter with your Mac.
Check your Mac’s charging requirements and the charger’s USB Power Delivery support and output. Do not assume every USB-C adapter will charge at the same speed. Apple’s catalog lists adapters at different wattages as well as charging cables. Browse Apple’s Mac power adapters and cables.

Bag or sleeve: choose by measured fit
A sleeve or bag is worth considering if you carry your MacBook and want a dedicated way to protect or transport it. Match the accessory’s internal dimensions to your computer’s dimensions rather than relying on a broad “MacBook” label. Also consider protection, carry style, and room for your charger and other gear.
Roundups from WIRED and TechRadar cover bags, sleeves, and other accessory categories, but category coverage does not establish one universally best fit or design.

Stand, display, keyboard, mouse, or external storage: match your setup
These can improve a particular desk setup, but their value depends on how you work. A stand raises the screen; consider its adjustability and stability, whether you need to carry it, and whether an external keyboard and mouse would make the raised position comfortable. A display, keyboard, or mouse should suit the tasks and connections you use. An external SSD is relevant if you need separate storage or backups. No single item in this group is essential for every MacBook owner.
