The most useful outage lights are battery-powered: keep a flashlight for portable, directed light and a lantern for lighting a shared area. A plug-in automatic outage light can add quick illumination near an outlet, but should not be your only light. Ready.gov advises using battery-powered lights and avoiding candles during an outage.
Which type of outage light should you choose?
There is no established, independently tested “best” model in the available evidence. Choose by where you need light, how you will power it, and whether you can use it away from an outlet. A flashlight and a lantern solve different household needs rather than competing on a single ranking.

Why battery-powered lights are the safe starting point
Ready.gov/FEMA’s power-outage information sheet says: “Stay fire safe. Use flashlights, lanterns and other battery-powered lights. Don’t use gas stoves or candles to heat your home.” The American Red Cross gives the shorter instruction: “Use flashlights, not candles.” These are US-oriented recommendations; follow local fire and emergency-management guidance if you are elsewhere.
Do not use candles as outage lighting, and never use a candle or gas stove to heat a home. Lights provide illumination only; they do not replace alarms, evacuation plans, medical-device backup, or other emergency preparations.

How to prepare your household lighting
- Plan for each person. Ready.gov’s preparedness guide recommends at least one flashlight with extra batteries per household member. It does not specify a number or type of spare batteries.
- Add area lighting. Keep a battery-powered lantern available for a shared space, while retaining flashlights for portable, directed use.
- Check the power arrangement. Confirm whether each light uses replaceable batteries, a rechargeable battery, or a wall outlet, and whether it can be used away from an outlet.
- Verify readiness before an outage. Store lights where household members can find them, keep spare batteries with the flashlight, and ensure rechargeable or plug-in models are charged.
- Compare published specifications. If a maker lists brightness or runtime, check those figures for the particular model and operating mode. The sources available here do not provide apples-to-apples brightness, runtime, durability, or value comparisons.
What product examples can—and cannot—tell you
The American Red Cross Store’s emergency-lighting category includes examples of several formats: a Blackout Buddy emergency flashlight/nightlight, a hand-crank flashlight and smartphone charger, a hand-crank weather-alert radio with LED flashlight, and a LuminAID lantern with phone charger. These listings demonstrate product types, not independent endorsements or comparative winners.
The Red Cross Store’s Eton Blackout Buddy listing describes a plug-in light that automatically activates during a power failure and recharges from a wall outlet. The page also lists three LEDs in flashlight mode, one LED in nightlight mode, and dimensions of 2 by 3.9 by 0.75 inches. These are product-page claims, not independently verified test results. An automatic light can be convenient near its outlet, but its listing does not establish whole-room coverage.

For a broad search, try “emergency flashlight.” Other useful searches include “battery-powered emergency lantern,” “spare flashlight batteries,” and “plug-in emergency outage light.” Treat search results as a way to find options, then compare power source, intended use, readiness, and any specifications the maker actually publishes. The Red Cross Store listings establish that these product formats exist; they do not verify Amazon inventory, merchant terms, or affiliate availability.
