There is no single best IT management tool for every team: service-desk software, endpoint management, asset management, and infrastructure monitoring solve different problems. Start with the work you need to improve, then compare products that fit that job, your device and cloud environment, and the effort your team can support.
What counts as an IT management tool?
IT management is a group of related software categories, not one product type. A service-desk system organizes incidents and requests; endpoint management configures and protects devices and apps; IT asset management tracks hardware, software, and cloud assets; and operations monitoring helps teams observe networks, servers, and applications. Some vendors sell products in several categories, but that does not mean one license includes every function.
The examples below illustrate different jobs, not a head-to-head performance ranking. The available evidence is primarily official vendor documentation, not an independent comparative test.
Compare tools by their primary job
| Tool or product family | Primary job | Documented scope | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Intune | Endpoint and app management | Microsoft describes enrollment, device configuration, endpoint security, app deployment and protection, and keeping devices current. It supports mobile device management (MDM) and mobile application management (MAM). | Whether the plan and capabilities cover your specific operating systems, devices, and policies; which Microsoft licensing applies in your country. |
| ServiceNow ITSM and ITAM | Service workflows and asset lifecycle management | ServiceNow describes incident, problem, change, and request management, alongside hardware, software, and cloud asset lifecycle management connected with procurement, contracts, the CMDB, and service operations. | Whether the platform’s modules, integrations, operating requirements, and cost fit your workflows and team. |
| ManageEngine product families | Several jobs, depending on the product | Its catalog spans service management, IT asset management, endpoint management and security, IT operations and observability, and MSP-focused products. Named products include ServiceDesk Plus, AssetExplorer, Endpoint Central, patching products, and monitoring offerings. | The exact product, edition, modules, integrations, and administration model; a broad catalog is not evidence that all functions are bundled. |
Choose endpoint management for devices and work apps
Endpoint management is the relevant category when the main task is enrolling, configuring, securing, updating, or deploying apps to company devices. Microsoft describes Intune as a cloud-based service for managing devices and apps. Microsoft Learn’s Intune overview, updated May 21, 2026, lists support for Android, iOS/iPadOS, Linux, macOS, tvOS, visionOS, and Windows. That list is a starting point, not a guarantee that every feature works on every device or operating-system edition; verify the capability you need against the current requirements.

Decide whether you need MDM, MAM, or both
- MDM enrolls and manages the whole device. It is typically the relevant model when an organization owns and administers the device.
- MAM manages work apps and their data. It can suit bring-your-own-device (BYOD) arrangements where the organization needs to protect work information without managing personal content on the whole device.
- Both can be used when the organization needs device-level controls for some users or devices and app-focused controls for others.
Microsoft says Intune depends on Microsoft Entra ID for identity, groups, and Conditional Access signals. If those services are part of your environment, include their configuration and administration in the evaluation rather than treating endpoint management as an isolated purchase. Microsoft’s documentation says advanced Intune capabilities are available through Microsoft 365 plans, Intune Suite, or standalone subscriptions, and mentions a 30-day trial. Plan contents and availability can change, so check Microsoft’s current licensing information for the country and plan you intend to use.
Choose ITSM and ITAM for service workflows and asset records
IT service management (ITSM) is the category to examine when the priority is handling incidents, problems, changes, and service requests. IT asset management (ITAM) focuses on assets and their lifecycle—for example, hardware, software, and cloud assets. An organization may need one category, the other, or connected workflows across both.
ServiceNow presents ITSM and ITAM as connected offerings on its platform. Its ITSM material covers incident, problem, change, and request management. Its ITAM material describes asset lifecycle management linked to procurement, contracts, the CMDB, and service operations. These are vendor descriptions of product scope, not independent evidence that ServiceNow will produce better outcomes, cost less, or be easier to operate than another option.
Consider a broad catalog when you need several IT functions
ManageEngine is an example of a vendor with products across multiple IT management categories. Its official catalog lists service management, asset management, endpoint management and security, operations and observability, and MSP-focused offerings. Its storefront names products such as ServiceDesk Plus, AssetExplorer, and Endpoint Central, along with patching and monitoring products.
Rank #3
That breadth can make it worth evaluating when your requirements span several jobs. Compare the individual products and editions you would actually deploy: a vendor catalog does not establish which features are included together, how well a particular integration works, or whether the administration model suits your team.
How to evaluate candidates for your environment
Before choosing a product or suite, compare candidates against your actual work and constraints. Use these checks to avoid selecting on category labels alone:
- Primary job: Identify whether you need ITSM, endpoint/UEM, ITAM/SAM, monitoring/observability, identity or security capabilities, or a deliberate combination.
- Environment: List operating systems, mobile and BYOD needs, cloud and on-premises requirements, and network reachability constraints.
- Workflows and integrations: Check fit with your identity provider, device inventory, CMDB or asset records, ticketing, security tools, APIs, and existing platform investments.
- Controls: Define requirements for compliance reporting, role separation, device and app policies, data handling, auditability, and remote support.
- Operating model: Decide whether the tool must support one internal IT team or an MSP, including any need for multi-tenancy, automation, and reporting. Account for implementation effort and the skills needed to run it.
- Economics: Find out whether licensing is based on users, devices, or assets, and include edition and add-on charges, implementation, migration, training, and ongoing administration.
The official product descriptions cited here do not establish a like-for-like price comparison. Request current licensing and implementation estimates for your required configuration rather than comparing headline prices across unlike editions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical selection process
- Write down the three workflows you most need to improve. Be specific—for example, a service request, a device policy, or an asset lifecycle task—so vendors are evaluated against the same work.
- Count and classify the people and technology in scope. Record managed users, devices, and assets, including operating systems and ownership model.
- List mandatory integrations and deployment constraints. Separate must-haves from preferences, including identity, ticketing, inventory, security, hosting, and network requirements.
- Eliminate candidates that fail a mandatory requirement. Confirm support for the required device, capability, deployment model, and licensing before spending time on a broader evaluation.
- Trial representative workflows with realistic data. Assess whether the workflows function as needed and how much effort setup, administration, reporting, and routine changes require.
Because the cited evidence does not provide independent comparative performance data, the final choice should turn on verified requirements and your own evaluation—not a universal winner claim.
