Nintendo Switch 2 is the easiest recommendation for most players because it combines Nintendo exclusives, local multiplayer and TV play. PC players have stronger alternatives: the ROG Xbox Ally X offers the most capable Windows hardware, while the Steam Deck OLED remains the smoothest Steam-focused experience. The Lenovo Legion Go 2 is the large-screen option, and the Super Pocket is a simpler choice for retro gaming.
These recommendations use US pricing and availability checked on August 8, 2026. Prices can change, particularly for the Switch 2, whose US price is scheduled to increase on September 1.

1. Nintendo Switch 2: the best handheld console for most people
Choose it if: you want Nintendo exclusives, straightforward setup, local multiplayer, handheld play and the ability to connect to a TV.
The Switch 2 remains the strongest all-round recommendation because it behaves like a traditional console rather than a small computer. You buy a game, launch it from the home screen and use the same system in handheld, tabletop or TV mode. Nintendo’s first-party library and Joy-Con 2 controllers also make it the most natural choice for families and couch multiplayer.

- Absolutely Surprising Gift: Our handheld game toy is a surprising gift for kids, teenagers, and even adults. It is the best gift for birthdays, Christmas, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. Customer satisfaction is our top priority. Our customer support team will serve you wholeheartedly.
Its hardware includes a 7.9-inch 1920×1080 LCD touchscreen with HDR10 and variable refresh rate support up to 120Hz. It has 256GB of internal UFS storage and weighs approximately 534g with the Joy-Con 2 controllers attached. Nintendo rates battery life at roughly 2 to 6.5 hours, depending on the game and settings.
The main storage trap is compatibility. Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card for Switch 2 game storage. A regular microSD card from an original Switch cannot save or load Switch 2 games or save data. Cards up to 2TB are supported, and the first card requires a system update.
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but compatibility is not universal perfection. Some games, accessories and features have limitations, so check Nintendo’s compatibility list before assuming an older title will work exactly as it did on the original console. Also account for game pricing: Nintendo-published digital Switch 2 exclusives can have different MSRPs from their physical editions.
Price note: the price used for this guide is $449.99 before tax as of August 8, 2026. Nintendo has announced a US increase to $499.99 beginning September 1, 2026.
2. ROG Xbox Ally X: the best Windows gaming handheld
Choose it if: you want Game Pass and multiple PC storefronts, and you are willing to pay for high-end hardware.
The ROG Xbox Ally X is the most powerful recommendation here for buyers who want a Windows handheld. Its Xbox-oriented full-screen interface makes it less desktop-focused than older Windows handheld workflows, while Windows itself gives you access to Steam, Xbox, Epic Games Store, GOG, Battle.net and other PC software.
Its hardware is built around the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor with 8 cores and 16 threads, Radeon integrated graphics, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. The 7-inch 1920×1080 IPS display runs at up to 120Hz and supports AMD FreeSync Premium VRR. An 80Wh battery is unusually large for this category, although demanding games can still drain it quickly.
The device weighs 715g and includes Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4 and a UHS-II microSD card reader. At $999.99, it is expensive, but the price is easier to justify if you want one handheld for Game Pass, Steam and other Windows libraries rather than a device tied to one store.

- SEE EVERY DETAIL – Make every scene pop with 500 nits of stunning brightness and 100% sRGB color accuracy. And with 10-point touch support, your interactions are as precise as your aim.
- PLAY YOUR WAY – Play hundreds of high-quality PC games with your complimentary 3 months of PC Game Pass and EA Play. With new games added all the time, there’s always something new to play.
- POWER-UP AND GO – When it comes to gaming on the go, battery life is everything. The Lenovo Legion Go S is built with a robust 55.5Whr battery that delivers the long-lasting power you need for extended play sessions.
- TAKE FULL CONTROL – Get ready to dominate with the ergonomic Legion TrueStrike Controllers, designed for all-day comfort and precision. With their anti-slip texture, you’ll stay in control during even the most intense battles.
Windows remains the compromise. Updates, launcher conflicts, controller-focus problems and sleep/wake failures can interrupt the console-like experience. This is a PC that happens to have built-in controls, not a completely maintenance-free console.
Do not confuse it with the 2024 ROG Ally X. The older ROG Ally X uses the Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform and model RC72LA. The newer ROG Xbox Ally X is model RC73XA and uses the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform.
3. Steam Deck OLED: the best handheld interface for Steam
Choose it if: most of your games are on Steam and you value a unified, console-like interface over maximum performance.
SteamOS remains the easiest PC handheld operating system to live with. The Steam Deck OLED opens directly into a controller-friendly library, supports suspend and resume, and avoids the need to manage a Windows desktop every time you want to play. Its dual trackpads and four assignable rear grip buttons are also useful for strategy games, older PC titles and games designed around mouse input.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The OLED model has a 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR display with a refresh rate of up to 90Hz. Other specifications include 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM, an AMD Zen 2 CPU, RDNA 2 graphics, a 50Wh battery, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and microSD expansion. Valve estimates battery life at 3 to 12 hours, although demanding games are near the lower end of that range.
The important 2026 caveat is value. Following Valve’s May 27 price increase, the 512GB model costs $789 and the 1TB model costs $949 in the US. Older articles that list $549 or $649 are no longer accurate. The unchanged performance now competes with newer Windows handhelds that offer more processing power.
SteamOS also has boundaries. Games using unsupported anti-cheat systems, Windows-only launchers or incompatible software may need workarounds or may not run correctly. Check a game’s Steam Deck compatibility status before buying specifically for it; “available on Steam” does not automatically mean “works well on SteamOS.”
4. Lenovo Legion Go 2: the best large-screen and flexible PC handheld
Choose it if: you want a big display, detachable controllers, a built-in kickstand or a choice between Windows and SteamOS.

The Legion Go 2 is the most flexible design in this group. Its 8.8-inch 1920×1200 OLED display supports up to 144Hz and VRR, while the detachable Legion TrueStrike controllers and built-in kickstand make tabletop play practical without an additional stand.
Configurations can include up to an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor, 32GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 2TB PCIe SSD. The 74Wh battery is substantial, but it also contributes to the system’s size and weight. Lenovo lists Windows 11 and SteamOS configurations, so check the exact model rather than assuming every Legion Go 2 has the same software.
The starting US price used here is $1,099.99, with the final cost varying according to processor, memory, storage and operating system. The device weighs more than two pounds, making it noticeably less compact than the Switch 2 or Steam Deck OLED. The large screen is excellent for games and desktop tasks, but it is not the best choice if you want something light for commuting.
There is also a software distinction: Lenovo’s Legion Space application is available on Windows models, not on Legion Go devices running SteamOS.
5. ROG Xbox Ally: the best cheaper Windows handheld
Choose it if: you want Windows, Xbox Game Pass and access to PC storefronts without spending $1,000.
The standard ROG Xbox Ally is the more affordable way into ASUS’s newer Xbox-oriented handheld interface. At the $599.99 price used by Tom’s Hardware, it is a practical alternative for players who want to install PC games from more than one store.
It is not simply a smaller version of the Ally X. Performance is much lower, and it is better suited to less demanding games, older releases and sensible graphics settings than to running every new AAA game at high settings. It also uses a non-OLED display and has reported sleep/wake problems.
That makes the standard Ally a budget Windows handheld rather than a high-performance replacement for a gaming laptop. Retail pricing and availability can change, so check the current price before buying. If the gap to the Ally X narrows during a sale, the larger battery and stronger hardware of the X model become much more compelling.

6. Super Pocket: the best simple retro handheld
Choose it if: you want physical retro-game cartridges and minimal setup.
The HyperMegaTech Super Pocket is aimed at a different buyer from the other recommendations. It is a small cartridge-based handheld that uses Evercade cartridges, many of which contain several games. Typical cartridges cost around $19.99 and often include approximately six to 15 games, depending on the collection.
Its appeal is simplicity: insert a cartridge and play. You do not need to configure emulators, organize ROM files or troubleshoot a PC launcher. It is a good gift, collector’s item or compact retro system.
The trade-off is equally clear. Super Pocket is not designed for modern PC games or current-generation console releases, and cartridge availability varies by collection. Treat it as a retro recommendation, not as a cheaper alternative to a Switch 2 or PC gaming handheld.
How to choose the right handheld
- Start with your game library. Choose Switch 2 for Nintendo exclusives, Steam Deck OLED for a primarily Steam-based library, and a Windows handheld for Game Pass, Epic, GOG, Battle.net or games with Windows-only launchers.
- Decide how much configuration you will tolerate. Switch 2 requires the least maintenance. SteamOS is simpler than Windows for supported games. Windows offers the broadest compatibility but can involve updates, launchers, desktop controls and sleep/wake troubleshooting.
- Check the display and weight. The Legion Go 2 has the largest screen, while the Steam Deck OLED offers an OLED panel in a more conventional handheld shape. The ROG Xbox Ally X weighs 715g, and the Legion Go 2 is heavier still.
- Budget for storage. Switch 2 specifically needs microSD Express for expandable game storage. The PC handhelds use more familiar microSD expansion, but large modern games can still make a 512GB or 1TB SSD fill quickly.
- Consider where you will play. Switch 2 is the strongest TV-and-handheld hybrid. The Legion Go 2 works well on a table because of its kickstand and detachable controls. A Steam Deck or Windows handheld is more dependent on a USB-C dock for a comfortable TV setup.
- Do not use battery capacity as a guaranteed playtime figure. An 80Wh or 74Wh battery helps, but frame rate, brightness, resolution, game engine and power mode determine actual runtime. A demanding AAA game can exhaust any of these systems far faster than a lightweight indie game.
Which handheld should you buy?
| Your priority | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo exclusives and family play | Nintendo Switch 2 | Dedicated console software, Joy-Con 2 controllers and TV support |
| Maximum Windows compatibility | ROG Xbox Ally X | Strong hardware, 80Wh battery and access to major PC storefronts |
| Simple Steam gaming | Steam Deck OLED | SteamOS, suspend/resume and controller-first navigation |
| Biggest screen and tabletop use | Lenovo Legion Go 2 | 8.8-inch OLED display, kickstand and detachable controllers |
| Lower-cost PC handheld | ROG Xbox Ally | Windows and Game Pass access at a lower entry price |
| Physical retro collections | Super Pocket | Evercade cartridge support and very little setup |
FAQ
Is the Nintendo Switch 2 better than the Steam Deck OLED?
They serve different purposes. Switch 2 is better for Nintendo exclusives, TV play, local multiplayer and a straightforward console experience. Steam Deck OLED is better for a Steam library, PC games, emulation and a controller-focused PC interface. Switch 2 is not automatically compatible with every original Switch game, while Steam Deck compatibility varies by game, anti-cheat system and launcher.
Is the Steam Deck OLED still worth buying in 2026?
It is still a strong choice for Steam users who value SteamOS, suspend/resume and ease of navigation. Its value is weaker after the 2026 US price increase to $789 for 512GB and $949 for 1TB, especially because newer Windows handhelds offer more performance. Buy it for the software experience, not because it is the cheapest high-performance option.
Can I use a normal microSD card in the Switch 2?
No. Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card to save or load Switch 2 games and save data. Regular microSD cards used with the original Switch cannot perform that function. Cards up to 2TB are supported, and the card may require a system update the first time it is used.
What is the difference between the ROG Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally X?
They are different generations. The 2024 ROG Ally X is model RC72LA and uses the Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform. The newer ROG Xbox Ally X is model RC73XA, runs Windows 11 Home, uses the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor and has an Xbox-oriented full-screen interface.
The Bottom Line
For most buyers, get the Nintendo Switch 2 if you want a conventional console with Nintendo games, TV play and minimal configuration. Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X for the strongest Windows-based handheld experience, the Steam Deck OLED for the best SteamOS interface, and the Lenovo Legion Go 2 if screen size and detachable controls matter most. The standard ROG Xbox Ally is the sensible lower-cost Windows option, while the Super Pocket is the right answer only for cartridge-based retro gaming.
