Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If you need to run an existing GW-BASIC program, start with PC-BASIC: it is a modern interpreter built for the GW-BASIC family and supports several legacy BAS file types. For a more modern environment to learn or write BASIC, consider QB64, which compiles programs to native executables, or FreeBASIC, which offers a QuickBASIC-compatible mode. Neither compiler is an exact GW-BASIC replacement, so code that depends on the old dialect or hardware may need changes.
Which GW-BASIC alternative should you choose?
| Option | Best for | How it handles programs | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC-BASIC | Running or inspecting legacy GW-BASIC-family programs | Interprets GW-BASIC, BASICA, PCjr Cartridge Basic, and Tandy 1000 GWBASIC dialects; documents support for plain-text, tokenised, and protected BAS files and Microsoft Binary Format (MBF) data. | It uses a command-driven, 1980s-style interface. Check programs that depend on particular hardware or unusual features. |
| QB64 | Learning or developing in a modern QuickBASIC-style environment | Compiles QBasic/QuickBASIC-oriented source into native executables for Windows, Linux, and macOS, with modern extensions. | It targets the later QBasic/QuickBASIC dialect. Its FAQ says most GW-BASIC code needs minor changes; hardware-specific operations may fail or behave differently. |
| FreeBASIC | Compiling and adapting QuickBASIC-like programs | A free compiler with a QB language mode intended to improve compatibility with QuickBASIC source. See its compiler documentation. | It is not a drop-in GW-BASIC clone, and substantial programs may need changes, particularly outside QB mode. The compiler is not packaged with an IDE. |
| Original GW-BASIC in a DOS emulator | Preserving behavior tied to the original interpreter | A community guide describes running the old DOS executable through DOSBox. | The guide describes GW-BASIC as historical 16-bit software that cannot run directly on modern 64-bit Windows. The original executable remains under copyright. |
For the closest match to GW-BASIC’s dialect and file formats, choose PC-BASIC. Choose QB64 or FreeBASIC when compiling new programs is more important than exact compatibility. If preserving an original setup matters, DOS emulation is an option, but it is not the only way to run legacy code.
PC-BASIC: the closest modern interpreter match
PC-BASIC is the most direct choice here for running old programs because its stated target is the GW-BASIC family, rather than QuickBASIC alone. Its project documentation covers multiple BAS file formats, MBF data, and emulation of common legacy video and audio hardware. That makes it a useful first try for programs whose behavior depends on those conventions, though compatibility with any particular program is not guaranteed.
PC-BASIC is an interpreter, not a modern visual IDE. Its quick-start workflow uses commands: enter LOAD "PROGRAM" to load a BAS file, LIST to display its source, and RUN to start it. To save a text BAS file, use SAVE "PROGRAM",A. These commands let you inspect a program before running or editing it.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
QB64: a modern QuickBASIC-style compiler
QB64 suits learners who want a more contemporary QuickBASIC-style environment and the option to compile native executables for Windows, Linux, or macOS. It also adds modern extensions. Its target is the later QBasic/QuickBASIC lineage, however, not exact GW-BASIC emulation. The QB64 FAQ says most GW-BASIC code can run with minor changes, while warning that hardware-specific operations may not work as expected.
That distinction matters for programs using graphics, sound, or direct hardware operations: a program may need adaptation even if its basic language statements are accepted. Test the specific program rather than assuming that a successful compile proves its original behavior is preserved.

FreeBASIC: use QB mode for QuickBASIC compatibility
FreeBASIC is a free compiler for readers who want to build programs and are prepared to adapt source. Its QB language mode is the documented route for better QuickBASIC compatibility. It is not a direct GW-BASIC interpreter, and substantial programs may require changes—especially when using the compiler’s default mode rather than QB mode. The compiler also is not packaged with an IDE, so expect a separate editor or development setup.
Original GW-BASIC and DOS emulation
If your priority is preserving the original interpreter’s behavior, the community download guide describes using DOSBox with the historical GW-BASIC executable. It also says the 16-bit DOS program cannot run directly on modern 64-bit Windows. This is secondary historical guidance, not current Microsoft support documentation; the original executable remains under copyright. For many existing programs, PC-BASIC avoids the need to run that original executable.

How to choose based on your program
- You have a BAS file and want to run or inspect it: try PC-BASIC first, particularly if the file is tokenised or protected or uses MBF data.
- You want to learn BASIC in a modern environment and create executables: start with QB64 if a QuickBASIC-style dialect fits your goals.
- You want a compiler and can adapt QuickBASIC-like code: consider FreeBASIC and its QB mode.
- Your program relies on old hardware behavior or exact interpreter quirks: test it in PC-BASIC or consider a DOS emulator setup; compiled alternatives may differ.
Compatibility depends on more than the BASIC statements. Check the program’s dialect, file format, graphics and sound usage, and any hardware-specific commands. Product documentation gives a useful starting point, but it cannot establish how every individual program will behave.

The GW-BASIC User’s Guide remains a useful historical learning reference. It includes getting-started material, practice, file creation and input/output, language elements, and appendices. The guide describes itself as written for using the GW-BASIC interpreter with MS-DOS and documents MS-DOS 3.2 or later as a requirement, so its environment assumptions are historical rather than instructions for a current Windows installation.

The guide calls GW-BASIC “a simple, easy-to-learn, easy-to-use computer programming language” with English-like statements and mathematical notation. Read that as the manual’s period description, not a current independent assessment. A BASIC programming book or user guide can complement an interpreter if you want structured exercises and a reference while learning.
