How to choose a game after The Witcher 3
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt combines an open world, monster hunts, sword combat, alchemy, and a morally ambiguous story in which choices affect allies, enemies, and the wider world. Geralt’s search for Ciri gives that variety a defined protagonist and narrative spine. CD PROJEKT RED also offers two major story expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. The official game page is a useful reference for the particular mix you may want in another RPG.

Best games like The Witcher 3 by what you want next
Baldur’s Gate 3: for reactive quests and role-playing freedom
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the strongest choice here if your favorite Witcher moments are conversations, difficult decisions, and quests that can unfold in different ways. Larian presents it as a Dungeons & Dragons world RPG about fellowship, betrayal, sacrifice, survival, and power. Its official site lists Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Physical Deluxe editions: Baldur’s Gate 3.
The main difference is how you play. Rather than follow one sword-wielding protagonist through action combat, you control a party in a turn-based RPG. Choose it for the flexibility of role-playing and character interactions, not because it handles like Geralt’s adventure.

#1 Best Overall
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity
Dragon Age: Inquisition: for a party-led fantasy campaign
If you want a large fantasy story with companions at its center, Dragon Age: Inquisition is a natural fit. EA describes a world in crisis and casts you as the Inquisitor, leading a party of heroes across multiple regions of Thedas. That group-led campaign is the appeal for players who want a broad fantasy journey rather than a solo hunter’s story. Check EA’s regional page for current purchase routes and supported platforms: Buy Dragon Age: Inquisition.
Dragon Age: Origins: for older-school choices and medieval fantasy
Dragon Age: Origins suits players drawn to medieval fantasy, a varied cast, and dialogue choices with significant consequences. It is an older-style role-playing game, so its presentation and systems may feel less contemporary than newer open-world adventures. Before buying, verify compatibility with your device and availability in your regional store; those details can vary. GamesRadar’s comparison includes it among the options for Witcher fans: GamesRadar’s games like The Witcher 3.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: for free-form exploration
Choose Skyrim if the best part of The Witcher 3 for you is leaving the main road, finding places on your own, and deciding what to do next. Its magical world, secrets, monsters, and alchemy offer familiar fantasy ingredients, but its emphasis is player-directed exploration rather than Geralt’s defined character and tightly framed personal narrative. It is a better match for freedom to roam than for a similar story. GamesRadar’s comparison also highlights this distinction.

Elden Ring: for challenging action and exploration
Elden Ring is the pick if you want a vast fantasy world, challenging action, and room to experiment with character builds. It is not the closest match for Witcher-style conversations or NPC interaction; the appeal is discovery and combat difficulty. Choose it when you want action-led exploration, not a quest-driven narrative equivalent. GamesRadar’s comparison notes both its build variety and the difference in NPC interaction.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II: for grounded medieval role-playing
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II offers a historical alternative: its story follows Henry amid conflict in Bohemia, with quests and character perks, but without the fantasy creatures and magic that define The Witcher 3. It is worth considering if you want medieval role-playing and are happy to trade monster hunting for a grounded setting. Deep Silver lists Standard, Royal, and Saga editions on its official game page.
Other partial matches worth considering
These games share a particular strength with The Witcher 3, but they are not all fantasy RPG substitutes:

- A WHOLE WORLD TO EXPLORE. AT HOME AND ON THE GO.
- Developed to take advantage of everything Nintendo Switch has to offer, the game delivers a truly powerful on-the-go experience.
- A gigantic and limitless open world to explore Sail through open seas, dive in search of long lost artifacts or gallop your mount into combat-the world of the Witcher beckons to be explored. Visit the luxurious and corrupt city of Novigrad, face the frigid cold of the wind-swept Skellige islands, and challenge the dark forces roaming the forlorn, war-ravaged No Man's Land. While on the road, use your special witcher senses to hunt down ferocious monsters and earn gold. Do anything you want, anytime you want!
- Unparalleled novel-like story, spanning over 100 hours of gameplay With over 100 hours of core and side-quest gameplay, The Witcher combines the intense, plot-driven pull of traditional RPGs with the freedom of choice only open world games can offer. Develop Geralt's skills to create your unique gameplay experience, make choices and face their consequences that will stay with you throughout the entire game.
- Tactical, responsive, multi-layered combat Brutal, tactical and highly responsive, the combat system of The Witcher elevates skirmish mechanics to an entirely different level. Fight foes intimately, one on one, or seamlessly switch from one enemy to another as you devise your own strategies to beat the countless opponents in the game. Use the crossbow to bring down monsters just out of reach, and employ real world physics as your weapon-smash foes into walls and use the environment to your advantage.
- Red Dead Redemption 2: detailed open-world storytelling, in a western setting.
- Dragon’s Dogma 2: large-monster combat, rather than the same kind of story and quest reactivity.
- Cyberpunk 2077: CD PROJEKT RED world-building in science fiction rather than medieval fantasy.
- Monster Hunter: World: monster-focused combat and co-op, not a close match for Witcher-style narrative choices.
- Middle-earth: Shadow of War: combat and enemy-system play in a fantasy setting.
- The Blood of Dawnwalker: dark medieval fantasy for players looking for that tone.
These are additional candidates identified by GamesRadar’s comparison list; think of each as a match for one feature, not the entire Witcher formula.
