There is no single best compact camera for everyone. For a versatile travel zoom, the Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VII is the strongest all-around pick in RTINGS’ tested guide. Choose the Fujifilm X100VI for an APS-C sensor and viewfinder, the RICOH GR IIIx for a more pocketable street camera, or the Canon PowerShot SX740 when extreme zoom reach matters most.

How to choose a compact camera

“Compact” covers cameras with very different strengths. Before choosing, decide what you need the camera to do: fit in a pocket, zoom in on distant subjects, deliver a larger sensor with a bright lens, or provide video and autofocus features for travel.

  • Portability: Consider whether the camera will actually fit where you carry it. A small camera you leave behind is less useful than a slightly larger one you bring.
  • Sensor and lens: Larger sensors can be appealing for image quality, while zoom range determines how many framing options you have without changing position. Fixed-lens cameras require you to be comfortable with one field of view.
  • Viewfinder and screen: A viewfinder can help when framing in bright conditions; a tilting or articulated screen can make low- or high-angle shots easier.
  • Video and focus: If you expect to record video or photograph moving subjects, compare those features rather than choosing on still-image specifications alone.
  • Price and availability: Prices, stock, and regional availability change. Check current retailer listings before buying, especially for models that guides describe as difficult to find.

RTINGS says it has bought and tested over 125 cameras in its lab and cautions that personal preference and shooting habits matter to the choice. Its recommendations below are useful starting points, not a universal ranking for every photographer. RTINGS’ travel-camera guide and compact-camera guide explain its picks and testing context.

Best compact cameras by use

Camera Best suited to Key strengths Main tradeoff
Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VII Versatile travel zoom 1-inch sensor; 24–200mm-equivalent zoom; pop-up viewfinder and flash; tilting screen Premium option; check current price
Fujifilm X100VI Enthusiast photography with a viewfinder APS-C sensor; 35mm-equivalent f/2 lens; in-body stabilization; hybrid viewfinder Fixed lens, less pocketable, and can be difficult to find in stock
RICOH GR IIIx Pocketable, discreet street photography APS-C sensor in a highly pocketable body; 40mm-equivalent lens Fixed lens and screen; no viewfinder or 4K video
Canon PowerShot SX740 Long-distance reach on a compact camera 960mm-equivalent maximum reach Smaller sensor and weaker image quality than the larger-sensor alternatives

These comparisons reflect the cited buying guides, not a new hands-on test. RTINGS’ compact-camera guide provides the model-specific tradeoffs.

Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VII: best all-around pocket zoom

The RX100 VII is the most flexible choice here if you want a small camera with a zoom lens rather than a single fixed focal length. Its 24–200mm-equivalent range covers wide scenes and more distant subjects, while the 1-inch sensor, pop-up viewfinder, pop-up flash, and tilting screen make it a feature-rich travel companion. RTINGS names it its best compact travel camera among the models it tested; TechRadar also highlights its autofocus and video capability, while noting its price. RTINGS’ travel-camera recommendation and TechRadar’s compact-camera guide provide further context.

Fujifilm X100VI: fixed-lens choice for enthusiasts

The X100VI suits photographers who value a larger APS-C sensor, a bright lens, stabilization, and a hybrid viewfinder more than zoom flexibility. Its 35mm-equivalent f/2 lens is fixed, so you frame by moving or cropping rather than zooming. It is also less pocketable than the smaller options and may be difficult to find in stock. RTINGS’ compact-camera guide identifies it as an enthusiast-oriented fixed-lens option.

RICOH GR IIIx: pocketability and street photography

The GR IIIx pairs an APS-C sensor with a 40mm-equivalent lens in a notably pocketable body. That makes it a sensible fit for discreet street photography or everyday carry when size matters more than having multiple focal lengths. Its compromises are significant if you want a traditional camera experience: there is no viewfinder, no 4K video, and the screen is fixed.

RTINGS updated its guide on September 24, 2026, replacing the discontinued GR III with the GR IIIx as its pocketable mid-range pick. See the guide’s current compact-camera selections.

Canon PowerShot SX740: maximum zoom reach

The SX740’s headline advantage is its 960mm-equivalent maximum reach in a compact form. That can help when framing distant subjects is the priority. The tradeoff is its smaller sensor and weaker image quality; the cited guide cautions that its results may not improve on what many modern phones produce. Choose it for the reach, not as a general image-quality upgrade. RTINGS’ guide discusses the SX740’s position among compact cameras.

Should you wait for the RICOH GR IV?

The GR IV is a newer pocketable model featured in current buying guides, but its testing status varies by publication. RTINGS said it had not tested the GR IV in its September 24, 2026 guide, so its recommendation there remains the GR IIIx. DPReview describes the GR IV as pocketable and reports that Ricoh made changes intended to help with dust concerns raised by some previous-generation users; it does not claim the camera is weather-sealed. DPReview’s travel-camera guide provides that context. If the GR IV is on your shortlist, compare current stock and independent testing rather than assuming it is a proven replacement for the GR IIIx.

What about the Canon PowerShot G7 X III and PowerShot V1?

The G7 X III, PowerShot V1, RX100 VII, and waiting for another model are all plausible options raised by a travel-camera shopper. The available guides do not establish a single winner across them. TechRadar describes the PowerShot V1 as a larger-sensor zoom model, while DPReview reports Canon’s plan to increase G7 X III production in response to increased orders. That is a manufacturer production plan, not confirmation of retail availability. Check current stock and compare the cameras against your priorities for size, zoom, video, and price. TechRadar’s guide and DPReview’s guide cover these models.

Which compact camera should you buy?

  • Pick the Sony RX100 VII if you want one pocketable camera to cover a broad range of travel scenes with a zoom lens.
  • Pick the Fujifilm X100VI if you prefer an APS-C sensor, bright fixed lens, and hybrid viewfinder over zoom and maximum portability.
  • Pick the RICOH GR IIIx if fitting an APS-C camera into a pocket matters more than a viewfinder, zoom, or 4K video.
  • Pick the Canon PowerShot SX740 if very long reach is your first priority and you accept the smaller-sensor image-quality compromise.
