If you want a VPN on Android for gaming, Proton VPN is a practical option to consider for its documented server-selection, protocol, and split-tunneling controls. But there is no evidence here that it delivers lower ping than other VPNs, and routing a game through any VPN can add latency. Whether to use it for a particular game depends on your connection and whether you need that game’s traffic inside the VPN.
What a VPN can—and cannot—do for Android gaming
A VPN routes selected traffic through a VPN server before it reaches its destination. That extra route may affect a game’s latency, so choosing a VPN should not be treated as a way to automatically improve ping. Google’s Pixel Phone Help gives this example: “For example, you may exclude a multiplayer game if you don’t want latency from the VPN to impact your game play.” This is Google’s guidance for Pixel VPN settings, not a universal instruction for every Android phone or VPN app. Google Pixel Phone Help
The available product documentation does not provide controlled, side-by-side Android gaming latency measurements by game, phone, carrier, server region, or network. It therefore cannot establish a best gaming VPN or support a claim that Proton VPN—or any other provider—will lower your ping.
Why Proton VPN is a reasonable option to try
Server selection
Proton says its Android app can connect automatically to a fastest server or let you choose an available server. That is a service feature, not a guarantee that the selected server will give you the best route to a particular game. If you choose manually, a nearby server is a sensible starting point, but the result depends on the game’s endpoint and your network. Proton VPN for Android

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Protocol options
Proton lists WireGuard UDP as available on Android, describes WireGuard as fast and lower in battery use, and recommends leaving Smart Protocol enabled. Those are Proton’s product descriptions and guidance; they are not independent tests showing that WireGuard UDP produces the lowest ping in a specific game. Proton VPN protocol guidance
Split tunneling
Proton’s Android split-tunneling settings let you exclude selected apps from the VPN, or use inverse mode to include only selected apps in it. Proton’s support page says the feature is available on paid plans. This control is useful if you want other phone traffic to use the VPN while a latency-sensitive game connects outside it. - SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
How to decide whether to route a game through the VPN
- Keep the game outside the VPN if minimizing VPN-related routing is your priority and you do not need that game’s traffic to use the VPN.
- Try the game inside the VPN if you have a separate privacy or network reason to route it through the VPN, then check whether the connection remains acceptable.
- Use split tunneling when you want VPN coverage for other apps but not the game, or when you want only selected apps to use the tunnel. The available controls depend on your VPN and plan.
How to compare your own connection
Measure on the phone, game, and network you actually use rather than relying on a provider’s general speed description. Compare the same game session and network conditions with the VPN disconnected and connected; if testing server choices, change one choice at a time. Record the game’s displayed latency if it provides one, and note any instability or disconnections as well. Treat the result as specific to your setup: it does not establish that the same VPN or server will perform best for another player.
